Something clutchy/brakish hangs when accelerating.

Hi,

I have this problem which i hope u guys have run into aswell..

Sometimes, when shifting & accelerating, i get the feeling something is holding the revs/speed back, when pressing in the gass pedal long enough in same gear something suddenly shoots lose and i get my speed back :neutral:

When i get this problem it usually persists for a few days & then goes away for a few months, but it always comes back..

My father had the same problem with his legacy, we figured it was due to the oil level, so we took care of that afterwhich the problem went away..
But i think this was just a coincidence since i have had this problem with my current legacy several times now when oil level seems to be OK.

I'm sorry if the above seems very noobish, this is my 1st car and i still dont know ***** about engine mechanics :cool:

this sounds like an electrical / sensor thing

My 96 automatic would have that problem. It showed itself the worst when you stopped on a hill, when you tried to go again it would take more revs than usual. My transmission was low on fluid.

I had this problem with sensors and vac leaks.

Ok so it could be a vacuum leak or a sensor failure..?
How do i find out? can i fix it myself?

Oh, and i forgot to tell there used to be another strange problem, which may or may not have something to do with it..
Last august, when i 1st drove the car from the dealer to my house, a 2hr drive, the engine shuts off when stopping for a red light, and also when i was coming off the highway..
This has happened a few times after that, like once every month, mostly on long drives, i also remember it happening when stuck in traffic once.
Anyway this problem has gone away and the engine hasn't shut off in 3 months now..

According to the service report it had its last major service in july 2009, and was due for a small service in august 2010 when i bought it, inwhich they put on a new exhaust, timing belt and battery, which should ve also reset the ECU if i'm correct right?

Anyway i feel kinda really stupid now, i just found out transmission fluid is NOT the same as the regulair engine oil :oops: ..so i checked it right away, took quite a while before i found the dipstick cuz of it being night here atm.. then saw it was just below the L bar, so due for a change, will do that tomorrow.

Subaru AT's get extremely hot... You should look into draining your old fluid and replacing it, and adding a bottle of Lubegard ATF - it'll help lower temps a little. Also you should really do a tune-up of plugs, wires, fuel filter, oil and oil filter.

Mine has manual transmission.. anyway, i'm planning to drain my TF tomorrow, and look for signs of dammage in the old oil, then i'll be putting in 4 liters of fresh fluid, manual says API GL-5, anything else i should know when buying new TF?
I'll also mention the things u wrote above @ next tune-up in summer.

hold on i'm a little confused...i never had a manual shut off the engine due to overheating in the trans.
as for gear oil, use what the book specifies.

I'm not saying the engine shutts off due to overheating, i just thought it could maybe have something to do with the problem @ 1st post, anyway the engine shutting off thing never occures anymore, in total it happened something like 5 times or so, the engine just shuts off like when u turn the key, although all electronics etc stay on..
Anyway that has not happened for months now even @ very long drives, i'm now more concerned about the problem in 1st post, i really hope changing the oil tomorrow will fix that...
