View Full Version : Crankshaft Bolt??

Since I received so many different diagnosis' on my cars rough running/misfire issue, I am exploring all the easy DIY options, before I have my motor pulled.

Someone told me perhaps my timing belt could be over worn, possibly even jumped a tooth. This sounded bizarre to me, but why not have a look just in case?

I got the radiator out, both small belts off, and am now stuck with the crankshaft bolt. As I was told, I'm supposed to leave the car in 5th gear, and pull the E-brake. I knew that the bolt would require a breaker bar to loosen. However, when I try to loosen it, the bolt spins, along with the crank, and the belt. (I took off the right side timing belt cover to confirm this.) The wheels are not moving, but the front of the car is up on jackstands.

Any input?

are you sure the front wheels are not turning. It is possible for the front wheels to turn but not the back especially at such low speeds. I would take the front of the car off the jackstands and try again.

You have to take the car off jackstands. I went through this this morning.

Block the breaker bar, and bump the starter.

This may sound nuts, but it works. Put the breaker bar as far down on the crank bolt as you can and block it on the top of the driver side "frame rail" and just barely bump the starter. I've done this several times and it works great.

Or You could block the Flywheel thru the access hole.

Or you can strap a chain wrench to the crank pulley. On a manual transmission, I find just setting the car on the ground easiest.

Block the breaker bar, and bump the starter.

yup, do this every day, a breaker bar against the left frame rail & tap the starter. Best to unplug the coil pack if its your fist rodeo, you don't want to let the engine run, just crank enough to break the bolt.

^^^Without a doubt the easiest way I've found and yes unplug coil pack.......
