Looked through threads trying to find a description of my tranny sound and possible problems...here it is...since buying 1997 legacy outback there is very odd noise...finally got car up on jack stands today (it was warm today - 27)...started car...used hose method to locate sound...it seems to be just on the other side of the tranny pan...like its right there...here's the odd thing...the sound comes and goes while driving...when turning right, even slighty, the sound disappears...when turning left, it begins again...staticky, whirr is the best description...when driving straight...it comes and goes as the car drifts left to right for road surface angles...Question...when I drop the tranny pan what is there...can someone point me to an image of what is right behind the pan and is there some pump, bearing, etc., that might be there causing the noise...transmission shifts okay...after reviewing post, might need to loosen the brake band a bit....it is a sound and not a vibration.
