stock exhaust staight pipe?

cant really afford a new headerback but im looking for a more free flowing setup. wanted to know if anyone has staight piped their stock exhaust and how it can be done.

the previous owner hacked the backbox off my exhaust,
sounds somewhat "hondaesque" but not that bad.
if it had UEL it would be alot better.

There is a mod called Gutting the muffler, there is some STI write ups on some forums, google it. I will see if I can find them. But you need a welder to weld it back up after you gut it.

Previous owner of mine just cut it off and left it.

And why go through the trouble of opening up your muffler just to weld it back up, I think it would be more logical to just get a new muffler and weld it on.

i want to do neither of those. i want to make a straight pipe going to a stock muffler. i guess that means gutting or bypassing cats/resonators...not sure what my car has and how many..BK Legacy L

2 cats right between the manifold and midpipe, and a resonator in the midpipe.

If you do it, let us know how it sounds, seems like it would be interesting.

no not at all. being there just makes it louder, it did sound good at idle LOL. I wanted potential "straight pipe" mods to be aware they will need a glasspack or resonator to keep it from getting all "raspy" sounding like my car was. when I got the car it had a honda fart can on it and I didn't have funds for a proper setup so I just brought it to the muffler shop and got rid of everything and put on a WRX muffler, when it was done it was still too loud and I was going to get a glasspack or 2 put on but then I got a proper subaru so the GT is parted out and I'm getting a proper exhaust fitted to the outback. UEL header-O2 extension-2.5" piping- 2 or 3 glasspacks-stock outback muffler or stock WRX muffler. I was also thinking of getting a "louder please" exhaust valve. I have a little hydraulic actuator but it will probably just rust up:(

I had a OBX EL header (which eliminates the cats and replaces them with a single resonator) on the stock exhaust. If the engine and exhaust were thoroughly warmed-up, it sounded ok-ish, basically just slightly louder than stock. Smelled like ass, as eliminating the cats always does. But if the exhaust was anything other than totally warm, it sounded incredibly raspy and horrible. Added a Magnaflow HF cat, resonator and muffler on 2.25" pipe--MUCH better.
