Throw out bearing

I just did a headgasket replacement on my 01 Outback. When I got everything back in and started it up, there was a very loud grinding sound. It does not seem as if it's coming from the engine, and the sound is more towards the gearbox. When I let the clutch out the pitch changes from loud, to a medium volume. I read in another thread that it could possibly be the throw out baring. Any idea's? Or suggestions? This is my first time ever taking an engine out of a car. So I'm not quite sure what to look for, or why it could be making this noise.

If you didn't get the splines lined up on the engine reinstall, then you could be looking at some issues with the TO bearing or the clutch fork.

My advice, order the TSK1 kit from Smart Service in Washington, and install it. It's a better TO bearing and will protect your input shaft from future damage.

Well, after pulling the engine back out I discover the gaurd under the flywheel had been bent up and was causing the grinding sound. But I also was able to see that the TOB was going bad so I'll be ordering a new one.
