I've searched. I've googled. I've looked around.
Here's the deal:

I no longer have power steering. Power steering pump doesn't even howl anymore from the loss of fluid. I don't mind not having power steering but eventually I want to get this fixed.

Legacy GT, it's a 1998 wagon. So my options are get the same one.. What's the generation year window on these things that will fit? From when to when?

What if I want to go cheap upgrade route? Imprezza? What's the year window on that?

Thanks!

i had questions about the same topic check this post out it may help. specifically check out the higher ratio steering rack from http://www.landefabrication.com/steering.html these are really good for the price i intend to get one later myself. as for what will work. any gc steering rack any legacy steering rack up to 3rd gen should work also someone else can chime in to correct me if i am wrong.

I too am looking for a cheap way to upgrade my rack. I have power steering, but the stock rack has a slow leak and may be on its way out.

SO, GC racks fit BDs??? Anyone have any idea as to ratios of racks which are compatible? I am looking for a take-off from a compatible model which is quicker than stock. Any further info would be much appreciated.

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you. I like that link.. but I don't think I can make myself spend 600 bucks for a steering rack. Even if it's 1:1.5 which sounds awesome in theory..

I guess I'm going to find a GC / Impreza rack of the the same year. I know my car is a 3rd gen, just don't know what the year window is so I imagine the closer to 1998 I get the better.

Probably score some upgraded steering bushings while I'm at it. Think Whileline makes them.

^ Your car is a 2nd gen.

So a gc steering rack is plug and play? No swapping linkages? Does anyone know if a gc rack is quicker than what we have?

no problem as you see i am not the fastest at replying due to my schedule. anyways... i understand the thought of 600 bucks for something that usually would cost half that to replace i just see it differently. i plan to keep and modify my car for a long time, and track my car once in a while so 600 bucks for a very good performance enhancing part that will plug and play no problem seems to be a good solution for me.

Thanks for the reply. If I was planning to track my car I would go for that rack too. I have found a wrx rack that is currently in a gc. The owner has modified the rack to fit the linkages. I need to know if the GC rack is plug and play on Leggys, cause I want to jump on it! I need a vote of confidence. ANyone?

I cant give you the vote you need but I have seen a thread a few weeks ago with a BK legacy having a GC RS rack.

No lines had to be changed I believe.. sorry for no solid facts..
