So. I am going to look at a 1996 Legacy GT that has around 230,000 miles on it and has some trans problems. Owner says it lost 3rd gear and slips out of drive.

I am just curious if this trans is just toast, or if there could be something else I could look at to possibly fix it so i can drive it for the time being.

I am just trying to get some info before i go on the four hour drive to where the car is located. Oh, I plan on at least trailering it home.

Thanks.

Dont bother fixing it.. 4EAT is not as easy as 5MT when disassembled.. and even still the knowledge needed to disassemble and reassemble is no cake walk.

Just call a local junk yard and find a 4EAT from them.. It has to be cheaper thena 4 hour drive to get a parts car.

I am actually looking at buying another car, not a parts car. The guy has a 96 GT with higher miles but will sell it to me for $500 cause it has trans problems. I was just trying to see if the trans could be easily fixed or just junk it.

If the rest of the car is in incredible shape, it might be worth it.

Otherwise, 230k is a lot. There will almost certainly be other worn out parts at that mileage, so you'll probably be looking at spending a LOT of money to get it into shape.

Plan on spending $500-$1000 to replace the 4EAT if you replace it yourself. Add another $500-$600 to have a shop do it.
