I have been trying to find a good oil to run and want to know what the majority uses.
When I search "Oil" it says Oil is to common, and won't search it.

I just use some Castrol Syntec 5w-30 in my Outback. It's fairly cheap and I've heard pretty good things about Castrol oils.

I've run Mobil 1 Synthetic in the Subaru since the first oil change on the motor.
I run Valvoline regular on all our other cars.

I like the idea of running synthetic but I don't like switching after the engine has a lot of miles on it.

It seems to me the key is not as much what oil you use, but that you are consistent with every oil change.

Synthetic blend is potentially a waste of money because nobody seems to publish what proportion of the oil is synthetic vs. regular.

I used Penzoil Platinum 5W30. My old car had issues with getting fuel and soot in the oil (stupid rich stock tune and gas direct injection) and Penzoil plat was found to be the best reasonably priced and readily available synthetic at maintaining its viscosity and dealing with particulates.

Its available at Walmart for $23 for 5qts.

I use the same in my 98 and my 06, though I will likely start searching for a good 0W40 or 5W40 after I swap the 98 and start modding the 06.

look into rotella T6 5w40, it costs less than $20/gallon, a lot of turbo guys love it, and I've gotten good UOA's with it as well.

I have ran 5w20, 5w30, 10w30, but I have tried to stay clear of thicker oils to keep from starving my motor.

I know every motor is different on how it runs with different oils, but would you say the thicker oil is better?

These are the few brands that I have used-
Quaker State
Pennzoil
Castrol

I like the Pennzoil the most, but my car drinks it.
Castrol seemed to be the best against my motor burning it.
I won't ever use Quaker State again. I don't like hearing lifter tick, and this oil surely gave it to me. Other oils don't seem to have that issue, of the ones I have tried, unless I get low on oil of course.

stick to 10w30. Its the opposite, too thin an oil and you risk the oil not coating metal surfaces properly at higher temps (sheer stability), 5w30 is pretty much the thinnest oil an ej motor can run, and primarily its to increase mileage. If you look at the older subaru's (which basically used the same ej motor), theyre listed to run on 10w30.

The one thing that has kept me from using this too much (I've used it once before) is that it is technically a diesel oil, and diesels require a different additive pack than gas engines do. I've read that diesel oils tend to sludge up in gas engines...honestly not sure if that is true or not.

I don't know what UOA stands for, but it has something to do with his title I gave him.

+1 to penzoil platinum. I run 5w-30 in the winter and 10w-30 in the summer. I tried running 10w-30 in the winter but the noise when I first started my motor was to much for my liking lol.

That's mainly for the T1 and regular rotella, the T6, if you look in the back, is good for both gas and diesels. The old difference between "gas motor oil" and "diesel motor oil" was that the latter had a lot more zinc content that could potentially wreck the cats on a gasoline engine...but diesels themselves, due to increased emission laws needed to be much cleaner themselves (ie needing similar emissions gear as gasoline cars) so the formulation on a lot of "diesel" oils nowadays could be run on gasoline engines if you really want.

I run German Castrol 0w30 for winter time, because no car likes -35/-40(before windchill) weather. I run Rotella T-6 in the summer.
