So in doing my research for a EZ30D swap ive ran into an issue. Initially I that Brian at iwire would be able to do the wiring on this however he is unable to. Heres the email i have as to why.

Alright, I checked out the diagrams. The problem is they have a different number of wires that are different colors and the diagrams do not show what they do once they go inside the transmission control module. I can get an idea of what is going on from the manuals, but there is no way to be 100% sure. I don't really want to take a chance with your DD. If you lived close, this wouldn't be an issue. I'm not sure where you would like to go from here but I'd like to help if I can.

So a few questions,
1. Could this issue be solved with a standalone unit?
2. Does anyone know of anyone else that would be able to do this?

Thanks

There is no pinout for the TCU? If you cant find what you need here, I would go on rs25.com and post in the swaps thread. There are a couple of EZ30 swaps there.

A standalone TCU?

You could avoid that by swapping to a MT.

I would actually prefer to swap to a manual. However looking at keltiks H6 manual swap thread there are a few issues that as far as i know are unresolved. Such as this,

Engine stalls coming back down to idle at stop signs. Idle is also too low. I suspect...well actually i KNOW that this is down to the neutral switch. The ECU thinks the car is in neutral full time so doesn't regulate the idle correctly.

So if anyone knows the solution to this it would be greatly appreciated.

^^ sounds like all you need is the neutral switch from the MT?

Okay, so this isnt in the ecu itself?

The TCU is a seperate controller, but it receives/transmits information to the ECU.

Sorry i guess im a little lost. With a manual swap the TCU is wired to think that it is neutral full time. Thus the ecu cant control the idle in the correct manner. How will using a MT neutral switch change this? If i could id just use a manual wiring harness and ECU but the ez30d never came in manual form :(

Any clarification would be great thanks

The neutral switch is the only thing you really need to run a manual trans. That and any sensors for the tranny. It will think it is in neutral all the time and idle should problem a problem. At least that is what would work for an eg33. Lol.

So ive spent a good part of the day looking into this on other forums, primarily the svx ones. It seems that the ECU is programed for the higher rotational mass of the auto flywheel and auto trans. The higher mass allows the engine to slow down at a slower rate. Whereas when using the lighter MT that mass is no longer there so the revs drop too fast, drop below idle, and the IAC is unable to compensate in time.

The solution it seems is to add a dash pot to allow the revs to come down slower.

I'm swapping a 2001 ez30d into my manual 1999 impreza 2.5rs, and am currently finishing up the wiring. This was my first engine swap and first wiring harness merge, so I'm not an expert or anything. I have a buttload of wiring diagrams if anyone needs one. I'm pretty confident about all the wiring I've done except for what's associated with the TCU, cruise control, and AC system.

Here's the EZ30D TCU diagram (without traction control) (https://sites.google.com/site/inabsentia/_/rsrc/1297627680753/home/TCU.png)
I'm trying to wire the transmission control unit such that it thinks it's doing its job and doesn't tell the ECU to spit out a CEL. I'm wiring the TCU such that when the transmission is in neutral and the clutch is not in, the TCU thinks the car is in "D". I'm also planning on emulating the ATF temp sensor with a resistor. I'm a bit stuck as far as wiring the 2 vehicle speed sensors and turbine speed sensor (I guess the later is for the torque converter?). I was thinking of tying all three of the speed sensors to my MT's single VSS and hoping for the best.

I'm ignoring all of the "AT control" connections (the solenoid ones), the dropping resistor, all of the "Combination Meter" connections, and all of the "Inhibitor Switch" connections except for "D" and "N".

Here's the EZ30D cruise control diagram (https://sites.google.com/site/inabsentia/_/rsrc/1297627709299/home/cruise%20control.png)
For the cruise control unit, I'm wiring it pretty much as in the EZ30D's wiring diagram as if it was a manual transmission and ignoring the TCU completely. I'm not sure if this is going to work

Here's the 2.5RS AC sytem diagram (https://sites.google.com/site/inabsentia/_/rsrc/1297627709299/home/cruise%20control.png)
Here's the EZ30D AC system diagram (https://sites.google.com/site/inabsentia/_/rsrc/1297628483255/home/EZ30d%20AC%20system.png)
I'm unsure of what I'm going to do regarding the air conditioning. The EZ30D AC control system is significantly more complicated than the 2.5rs's, and the EZ30D uses an AC control module (which I don't have). The 2.5rs's AC system requires an ECU connection to the "evaporation thermoswitch" and "pressure switch", which in the EZ30D are connected to the AC control module instead. I think I'm going to have to somehow use an Arduino in place of the 2.5rs ECU.

Another difference is that the EZ30D also has 2 main & subfan relays while the 2.5rs has one of each. I think I've got that wired correctly though.

Wow, thanks for the post and wiring diagrams! Although at this point I think im going with a EJ20 turbo from a wrx. Its lighter, same power but with more potential, wiring is easier, more aftermarket parts available.

Thanks for the post though, im sure someone will find this very useful. Any pictures of the swap? Keep us updated, id love to see it when its done. Also you might want to contact 42 Autosports as they have done numerous EZ30D swaps with manual trans.

I have some pictures and I'm probably going to make a post on a couple different forums when it's all done (hopefully next weekend).

Cool man cant wait to see it. You on rs25.com with that impreza? How did you find us?

You know, I thought an EZ30D swap would be easier since I wouldn't have to deal with the turbo. The wiring is becoming a bit of an obstacle :(
I got a PM back from 42Autosports on rs25.com. They've been helpful when I've asked them questions, but they also haven't quite worked out the transmission control module yet. The lack of compatible vehicle speed sensors is apparently a big problem. At this point I'm hoping to find out what type of signal the 2 vehicle speed sensors and the turbine sensor output so that I can emulate it with an arduino or something based on my MT vehicle speed sensor output.

Yeah I'm on rs25.com with the same username. I've made a couple small posts about my car but nothing substantial relating to the swap quite yet. I found you guys after finding keltik's thread about his swap while looking for information about using the EZ30D with a manual transmission.

Just an update:

I more-or-less finished my swap several weeks ago and have been daily driving the car, it's a hoot. I have almost all the OBD2 codes taken care of.

I had several codes dealing with the AT solenoids, which I just emulated with a set of resistors. I was getting a code relating to the neutral position switch until I set the TCM to think it's in gear "1" all of the time. I also wired the 2.5rs VSS directly to the ECU (bypassing the TCM), which I think is preventing any incorrect gear ratio codes.

I'm still getting a P1507 code (idle air control), which I think may be legitimate and not really related to the swap wiring. I'm also getting a P0457 code, but I had that before and it's probably due to a rusted out fuel filler neck.
