no offense, and im not trying to sound like a dick but i dont think you have the experience/knowledge required.
if you have never done a basic engine swap (I.E from EJ22 to EJ25D or something of the nature.) i would really discourage trying.
ive done/helped on a few swaps and its not just a 'put this in that' type deal.
and if you dont know EXACTLY what your doing, it wont run, or run like complete shit.
and after week and months trying to figure something out, you have to send it to a shop to fix it.
someone else mentioned that its all the little parts/pieces that nickle and dime you to death.
that shit adds up QUICK. its always a belt , or hose, or gasket, or seal or sensor, or connector, or tool or whatever.
plus i would be very careful running that much power thru that little trans. there is a good chance you'll eat that trans up.

i work at a shop and on occasion we mend harnesses and engine swaps, sell the engines/parts for swaps etc. ive seen alot of people with more experience send there car to us and pay us alot of money to figure out where they went wrong. or end up selling the half done swap because people give up on it.

but if u do decide to go for it, we will be here for you, good luck. once you get it going, its worth it.

the VF40 is what the LGT, and the OBXT came with, and its not like other subaru turbos because it has a big ol' flange that the intercooler bolts too. and there is no adapter or anything for it.

ps the VF40 is a junk ass turbo that sucks balls.

no. WRXs and the FXT and i think the baja turbo all came with the TDO4
the OBXT, LGT came with VF40s because they use a different (better) manifold so they have to use a different intercooler, and they didnt stop there why not have the turbo different too.

also, the 05 LGT has a catted up pipe which you will want to get rid of, and a inline filter in the oil feed to the turbo which u will want to get rid of also. they are notorious for taking out the turbo.

There is a couple of these swaps around do some google searching. They are sick! I know a thread on rs25 with a guy that swapped on into is OBS. I will try to dig it up. Either was great price on that engine.

Well thanks for the advice but there's nothing to worry about I'm doing it at a shop with an experienced Subaru mechanic and he's not charging me anything! I've pulled my motor and swapped blocks and seals and head gaskets and everything etc. before and the only part where I'm not experienced at is the wiring, other than that I should be fine-Yes your right about the transmission it's probably not gonna last me more than a couple months if not weeks but there's this pull a part around the corner that sells stuff like that for DIRT cheap, I'm talking a complete engine for $150 all you gotta do is pull it from the car.

the trans will last as long as you want. it just depends on how much you abuse it.
how many times are you going to break a gear set before it makes sense to upgrade or until the junk yard has no more transmissions... sure is inconvenient breaking a trans when your headed somewhere important, or far from home and you gotta pay to tow it etc. food for thought.

wont work. that is a 4 bolt flange you need a 3 bolt.

there are only two factory turbos that work on that car
1) VF40
2) VF52

but this is what you want.

that is the turbo you want. inexpensive, durable, and powerful.
this is the best turbo for a LGT

With enough modification any turbo will fit.
The vf39 won't work because its not the right compressor housing, its not even pointed the right direction. Go get a vf39 and a vf40 and compare.
I told you. You need a vF40 or a VF52.

Plus if you try to weld the compressor housing its going to warp and be all shotgun.

Don't worry I have enough for this project, I got a junker legacy to daily drive and I'm doing this at a shop for free, the guys not charging me anything. Were tearing it down and replacing all the gaskets etc. and it also comes with all the wiring. After a couple months of driving it I'll start to save up for a 6 speed sti tranny and axels etc. But for now I can definetly afford this project, somebody suggested a vf48 will that work?

your only limited by the TMIC you're using.

if your using a LGT or 08+ WRX TMIC you can only use a TD04 from a 08 wrx, VF40, VF46 or VF52

you say you dont have the extra $50-$100 for the correct turbo and now your saying you have enough for the swap.
also, if you swap turbos you will likely have to change your tune accordingly.
different turbo, different waste gate spring, different tune.
in order for your car to work properly with the stock tune...YOU NEED A VEE EFF FORTY.

If you had the money, the best thing to do is buy the TD05/vf40 hybrid.
But like I said. A used vf40 is 300 to 350. And to ne honest 700 for that turbo is cheap. A rebuilt vf40 is like 900-1200 bucks

I wouldnt get a STI trans... Just get a standard WRX one and maybe build it (hardened gears and such). I have a friend that did a full STi swap in his WRX and he blew the trans and cant find one, or at least without selling his left nut. He just called me asking if I would install a new diff also, since he never upgraded the diff with the swap. It's pushing 500whp... Thats one reason I did a Nissan KA swap in my Volvo, I know I'll be killing 5 speeds with drifting and SR tranys and not easy to come by.

Good luck with the swap! Hopefully you get it done soon. My buddy and I are looking at maybe taking our Subies for a drive of Mt. St Helens before Nov. Good place to have a fun car to drive! ;-)

Oh, dont toss the turbo filters... Just replace them, the only reason they take out the turbo is because they are doing there job of keeping crap out of the oil system and they are not that hard to change. And also remember use synthetic oil only, conversational will get baked by the turbo.

I have a 1998 Subaru Legacy L wagon NA stock 135 hp ej22 motor with 170k miles on it-I just sold the motor and now I'm putting in a 2005 LGT Turbo Aspirated stock 250 hp ej25 motor with 100k miles on it. I already took apart the new motor and replaced all the gaskets, seals, timing belt etc. and just bought a brand new 2009 Forester TD04 Turbo that has 100 miles on it-they immediately took it out to do an sti swap on the forester-which btw was Steve's Pacific Import Auto's big project in spanaway. My question for you guys is the wiring, I have never messed with an ECU before-Were planning on putting in the GT dash in my legacy and so were rewiring EVERYTHING. I live in the tacoma area and I work at Tool Guru Subaru & Auto Import Repair, if any of you are local and are willing to come help out or check out the swap then PM me please. I really don't know what my best course of action though is gonna be to go about wiring this. PLEASE HELP ME! haha Any knowledge on these 2 motors will help. What would you do if you were in this situation?? Thanks guys.

Cool! I do have one thing to say though.... you're freaking nuts for wanting to re-wire the dash! Just pulling a dash in a BG/BK/BD is a career! When it comes to wiring, you wire the motor to fit the car, not the car to fit the motor. At least most of the time. If it was an S13, peace of cake, but these cars are not friendly. Not saying it cant be done, but it's gonna be a pain in the a$$! I was going to wire my 66 Volvo with a complete S13 chassis harness so I could plug everything in, but was told by my friend in Tacoma, just to make the motor with the cars wiring. So much less stress and after doing my homework, it make tons of sense...

Good luck though! Not saying it cant be done, just saying its gonna be hard! Look forward to seeing this at a meet sometime!

It sounds like you're trying to install the 05 dashboard into your BK? I wouldn't do that. The easiest way to get your motor running is to merge the engine harness with your body harness... what ECU are you going to run, the 05 or the 98?

Fit is a loose term. With enough work it would fit. But you have to cut and weld the dash bar and Shit.
05 computer will work better. But cost more.
Also, there are a couple things you should change on that motor before you put it in (especially if you want it to last)
Get a catless up pipe because when the cat goes bad in those they have gernaded the turbo.
Also the oil feed line to the turbo has a filter in it. They get gunked up and starve the turbo and cause failure. The 07+ lgt doesn't have those.
So are you swapping compressor housings onto the TD04?

Stick with your current dash, and merge the harness to run the 05 ecu so your engine is properly controlled. That way you'll also be able to tune it.

the compressor housing is the intake side of the turbo. again. the VF40 compressor housing is different than most subarus.there for a TD04 wont fit. so you will have to swap compressor housings. however i dont think that is possible. (the "wind mill" or compressor wheel is a different size)

but it's getting done guys I can assure you that, right now I'm just trying to get the wiring done-it's a lot of work
and then the ONLY thing I need to finish this build is a Perrin Turbo Inlet-When I bought the engine it came ripped as always.

^^ thats not a "JDM" grill. It's a C-Mod grill that is likely modeled from a HippoSleek or similar make.

I had/have one on my car, so does sybir (and a handful of others). You can find the C-Mod grill on ebay, and I think the fella was selling them on legacygt.com too.

I do like those grilles. The only tricky part is mounting. You have to very carefully drill holes where your stock grill tabs will go, then file the holes square to accept the plastic tabs. There's nothing worse the sloppy grill fitment, so do it right.

I actually used a drill bit to make the holes longer, then out some rubber bungs in the hole, and used zipties. I had mine painted black, which looked better than white I think. Anything looked better than white. LOL

what em are you using again?
sometimes you can have a harness built for a couple hundred bucks.
then all you would have to do is wire the fans, fuel pump and hook up your ground.
our shop usually charges $300-350 for a harness. so im sure there is a shop that would do it near you for about the same.

Hey guys! My boss hasn't TOUCHED my car so I've decided to do the wiring myself but I need YOUR help! So basically I completely took out allll old wiring from my 98 Legacy L wagon. I got a 2005 LGT steering column with all harnesses attached and the ECU and bulk head harnesses and ALL wiring are from the 2005 Legacy GT/Outback XT-same thing.

*What I need your help with*
Basically it's just plug and play but I've never done this before. I need to know where I lay the wiring. What goes in the dash and what goes in the engine bay. Also if any of you are in the area and want to offer up their help or just wanna check out the swap my car is located at my house now!

I would recomend Iwire as well.

You send them both harnesess and they will wire them up properly and if the car doesnt start they will rewire it for free.

Wires all layed out. plugged in cluster, clock, radio, cig lighter, steering wheel, and cruise control. Gettin ready to test things out! Just gotta sauder the fuse panel wires all together, buy and install new fuses and get a key to bypass imobilizers for the ignition cylinder on the steering column. I'm gettin work done!

comeon!! use shrink tube!! that makes air tight and no water penetration.. Electrical tape will wilt over time... loose its stickyness..

oh zach! before you solder.. then slide over the solder and apply heat to shrink the tube tightly over the wire :-(

There is a complete section for immobilizers. Replacement for each unit and replacement keys..

From the looks of it.. You will need a generic 05 LGT/XT key with RFID and then use this type of unit to reprogram the ecu/cluster/bcm/iginiton cyl.

Its $2000 for the unit.. so try to find a local shop who has one :-D

Take ALL the wiring out, send to I-wire and they will perfectly merge the wiring for you.

Re-install and plug everything in and voila, your swap is complete.

From what Zach has told me he a complete Auto body harness and engine harness. He has the 5MT ecu and immobilizer w/ key.

He has to wire in the HVAC, fuel pump, VSS, door sensors, door locks & windows. Everythings else is OEM BP XT.

Ya guys-I finished the wiring-Today from Colorado a lot is being shipped which I only purchased for $215!
-Steering Column
-Ignition
-Key with RFD chip
-Immobilizer system
-MT ECU
-also a U-joint for the steering column to rack connection

All I need to really do is install the clutch,
motor, put everything back together in the interior,
install the exhaust, and buy a couple more missing parts which I'll know
what I'm missing as I get closer to turning the key haha-It's all just mechanical from here.
I'd like to have some locals help me out though for real-I'm in COLLEGE right now AND Highschool-Running Start

Sure buddy.

External wastegates are useful in two ways for your setup. The first way is that your TD04 is a bit too small for your engine to have a really good volumetric efficiency (bigger engine vs smaller turbo); what that means is that the engine is going to drive the turbine very quickly, but due to the size of the turbo this will create a LOT of excess heat in the upper RPM range. The turbine will be driven VERY quickly (100,000RPM+); this creates a lot of heat, which causes the boost your turbo produces to be less efficient. Remember, you always want colder, and thereby denser, air.

An external wastegate will reroute the excess turbine gasses that would otherwise drive the turbine faster (creating more heat) and dumps them out the exhaust (or into the atmosphere) before they reach the turbo. This will both help keep your boost consistent with MUCH less taper, as well as keep your turbo healthier, your oil a bit cooler, your intake charge cooler, and give your ride a more consistent power band.
If you've ever driven a stock Forester XT (oem turbo); then you'll know immediately what I'm talking about. With the 2.5L engine, the turbo is fantastic for immediate, responsive power down low; but tapers off badly at ~ 3500rpm, and disappears almost entirely by 5k RPM on-wards.
An external wastegate will help the problem greatly, giving you a more linear power curve. While it won't fix the problem (only sizing up your turbo, or porting the INTAKE side of the turbo will do that), it will make your build much more to your liking.

This is an example of my old ex-wastegate. It is plumbed between the up-pipe and the down-pipe. It is a spring controlled release valve that takes exhaust gasses from the headers (which would normally go to drive the turbo) and exits them out of the exhaust (in my setup); this is done by a spring (with a predetermined psi rate), which then opens a diaphragm, which exhausts all the excess gasses that would otherwise be forced upwards into the turbo (which would drive the turbine).

Anything from ebay will work fine for low psi applications; but tIAL is pretty much the masters of ex-wastegates; I'd use a 44mm or similar size wastegate.

it was cut up and missing things. I just bought a manual wiring harness for $300 today in great condition-
Doing things right this time! In the end there's a lot less work to do.

Don't worry if people care or don't care - do the swap because it is AWESOME!

Remember, an intercooler is only good if you can get enough air directed onto it. So make sure you make some sort of splitter to direct air onto that sweet TMIC.

'Nord is right, a bigger intercooler won't do anything for you without proper airflow, splitter is definitely a mandatory job with such a small scoop.

I'm going to be doing a turbo conversion on my KA in my 66 Volvo, but I'm getting it running N/A first to make sure I have all the bugs worked out. Doing upgrades before its running can sometimes make big problems when you dont have a baseline to start with.

All in all, you doing a good job! I cant wait to see this at a WA meet, when every we can get everyone together this summer! So yeah, get your ass in gear and get some work done!

Thanks guys, it's definitely gonna get done, I've made some serious progress-the chassis is ready to roll, the clutch is installed,
motor bolted to the tranny and new x member and things are fallin into place pretty well considering how big the motor is! I may need to take
a saw za though to make some room for my new radiator! Ya I'm gonna be buying a lot of junkyard parts like starter motor, alternator, etc.
and I'm dying to get it cranked over. The only thing I'm nervous about is the engine giving me problems on the start for some reason "Murphy's law"

and can you shed some more light on a splitter? Can you put some images up?

A splitter forces the air from the scoop into/through the tmic, here's an example of the stock scoop (note that only the lower half of the tmic is affected: do better with yours):

Buy some aluminum from home despot or lowes and rivet or weld yourself a setup that will draw the air from the scoop to the tmic, and be sure to use all of the tmic.
Hint: the setup will be very shallow with the hood height and tmic height as they are.

top mounts are not the way to go if you ask me. if your going to stay under 300HP then a TMIC will do fine. FMIC works much better. that being said, the stock hood scoops on our cars are borderline useless. they dont catch nearly enough air. not by a long shot.(even the stock STI scoop and intercooler isnt sufficent IMHO) even with my 2.5RS hood scoop going to a WRX TMIC, i still get rediculously high air temps around town. so i went front mount. but that goes back to the whole 'get it running first' thing. also, maybe i missed it... why did you tear it all back apart??? you had it like almost done if i remember correctly..

Ya those Top Mounts do remain reallyyyyy hott- an oil cooler would help compensate but I'm not gonna do that yet.

i dont think the oil temp has much effect on the air temp... i would say EGT has more effect on intake temp then oil temp on a turbo car. hell the law of physics says (you know that whole 'PV= nRT' thing) that just the pressure alone would make more heat than the oil cooler would compensate for.

some times when you have a freshly built engine, or an engine that has been sitting for a long time, and you start the engine it takes anywhere from 15-30 seconds to build oil pressure. running the bearings dry even for a couple seconds can cause damage to the bearings and lead to possible premature failure.
solution:
before you start your engine for the first time, pull your spark plugs and crank it for 30-45 seconds. this will give you oil pressure and 'prime' the oil/lubrication system before enitial start up. by doing this you get oil feed to all your crutial components, so you dont run your bearing dry.

and finding tricks to make the ECU think it wasn't in Park or drive or neutral etc.

Ok so I finally got a hold of someone parting out their car, his names Allen Stewart from Colorado.
These are the parts that he has for me with listed prices-

-Brake System $200
-Steering Wheel-no airbag $80
-Alternator $60
-Starter $60
-MAF Sensor $45
-Electronic Accelerator $35
-Engine Bay fuse Box $25

These are the parts that I need that he can't provide me with for obvious reasons
but it's also just a couple other things that I need to get this swap done.

-and the Hoses that lead into the Dash Area-idk what they're called.

Now for those of you reading this. Do you believe that these prices are fair or not?
-The Coolant and powersteering tank I think should be $10
-The Alternator and Starter I think should be $35 each
-and since the steering wheel comes with no airbag it should only be $50.

ABS?! Why ar e you worried about the ABS?! I pull the fuel during the winter time to make snow driving that much nicer! You dont NEED ABS, it's just that everyone THINKS they need it.
