Those are N/A cars tho. People are arguing that the pressure required to alot of power those manifolds is too much for them. I am not worried about it because plastic is pretty rigid. Look at a mountain dew bottle... Those can hold quite a bit of pressure...

I'm not a fan of plastics b/c of longevity. Look at the turbo cars from the 90s - coolant reservoirs busted, turbo plastic inlets cracking, tmic piping, anything plastic that gets fitted several times, etc, all broken over time. I think it's great short term solution though for the reasons mentioned above, though.
lord flashheart
05-22-2012, 10:05 AM
Well there are diff. Types of plastics, and the doesn't flex nearly as much as all that other shiz. But I do agree with you, aluminum tubing is better for intercooler piping and such. I think part of the reason they do the plastic is because they can cast it with more precision and smoother flow. Iirc the plastic manifolds flow better than the Wrx and STi manifold, granted the manifold isn't thechoke point. The major choke point is in the combustion chamber. The air has a hard time squeezing between the combustion chamber wall and the valve at low lift.

Well, doing metal tipping makes sense. Plastic is only on a few cars when it comes to IC pipping. I know the Z32 uses some, but they also have metal pipping also. As for the intake, I have a feeling you would need to be pushing at least 400+ to even worry about it... But then again I could be wrong...

No I don't think you're wrong. They don't have the rough surface in the plenum like a cast aluminum part would - which should help with flow. But at the J/Y we worked at, we'd sell every last composite intake manifold that came in, if they were intact. Lots of American cars use em. We even charged more vs the aluminum intakes, lol. So in the short term they're fine, but you blow HG's or they are over a decade old, and it'd crack.

I have yet to see a subaru manifold crack yet. All the ej255s I've rebuild (which is alot) I've seen rods break and come thru the block and hit the manifold, ive seen them over heat so bad the cylinders distort, I've seen the oil turn to carbon, melted rods, disintagraded pistons seaze cams, even thermal melt down etc. But I have yet to see (or even hear of) a cracked manifold. Not saying plastic manifolds don't do that, but subaru seems to not have that issue.

Up pipe and Down Pipe Gaskets
Perrin Turbo Inlet
Exhaust system
Blower Motor Delete solenoid and other stuff
I need more fuses

Other than that-there's gonna be those little things that I run
into that are gonna "Nickle and dime me to death" says Chuck.
I hope all goes well. Here's some more pictures btw comparing the up pipe

I had a Bellmouth Invidia and gave it to my dad for his '04 WRX he just bought. He just came home from korea and I
got him into Subaru's ;D A lot of people suggest Divorced and there's plenty of clearance that was honed out for my
new VF52 :D and btw.......I'm gonna buy a brand new Access Port today! This guys selling it in my neighborhood for $400
Brand new because it didn't map on his STI! Killer Craigslist deal= +2!
lord flashheart
05-30-2012, 04:01 PM
Here is the deal. I know a thing or 2 about exhaust science, and here is my opinion
Devorced are ok n all, fedral better than OEM but bellmouth is better. Exhaust flow and intake flow are a lot alike. Think of it like this Engines are an air pump, power is a by product. Getting the old air out is just as important as getting air in. So the lower the VE of the exhaust, the harder it is to get air in. So now if you notice all that black sooty area that is restricting flow. there is a whole list of reasons I prefer bellmouth. Much involving thermal efficency, flow etc. And I'm not going to get going on that.

ARE YOU SERIOUS?
diagnostics over the internet is hard enough in older cars like ours,
so diagnosing something that has been retro fitted, with new shit, makes it damn neer impossible.
it could be anything.
the fact of the matter is you can ask other people question after question on what it could be but in
the end you put the car together, no one will ever know that car as well as you do. you need to
get in there get tangled up and check double check, then triple check everything.
ill do my best to help you. but the the more info given the better. be as discriptive a possible.
when you turn the key, do the dash lights work? does the fuel pump come on? what exactly happens.
important: if the ECU doesnt get power, the check engine light wont apear when the key is in the on possition with the engine off.
we need to know what does and doesnt happen.

I figured the swap would be pointless if I got a turbo this small so I put it on craigslist and whatdoyou know? They saw it and needed it back for a customer so they
payed me $20 more than what I payed for it, Yaaa!! haha So $320.
I decided to grow some balls, nut up, stop worrying about my weak stock tranny and bought a BRAND NEW VF52! Subaru's biggest OEM turbo. I found it on ebay and payed
only $900 for it as opposed to the $1300 retail price. The owner bought it brand new for a swap and it sat in his garage for a year but he never put it on because he got a 20G.

P&P the compressor side, and you can expect more cfm, which is more power; and less opportunity to choke the turbo.
P&P the turbine side, and you can expect quicker spool and lower boost threshold.
A win/win really. Also - opt for ceramic coating if you can wangle it, it'll keep the heat down. That, or a turbo blanket.

What kind of rally are you talking about. stage rally or rally cross?
If you want to stage rally, stop wasting your money and time on that car to make it a rally car. Its just not going to happen, or be worth making it happen.
First off, new drivers are given restricted licenses, meaning you'll be stuck to running in an Open Light (naturally aspirated) Group 2 (2wd) or Production Class (no fancy turbo motor swaps like you did) So right off the bat, your car wont even pass tech for you. So you'll need to build another car that will meet the hundreds of rules a rally car needs to meet. just so you can get enough seat time for rally america to unrestrict your license.
So assuming you dump 8 grand into building a open light race car, run it for a couple years, get your license unrestricted, Then dump another 3 grand into a cage that will pass tech for the legacy, and another 2 grand into all the required safety equipment you'll need. Your legacy will probably pass tech for Open class. But jumping from open light, to open... completely pointless IMO. and a waste of money.
If your not competitive in OL, theres no reason to upgrade classes, But if you are and are wanting more competition, then its time to step up to production class cars. Sell your OL car, buy a wrx/STi and start over building another car.
Keep the legacy a clean sweet looking street machine/daily driver. Your honestly going to be wasting your time trying to make it a stage rally car unless you feel like ripping all those legacy parts right back out.
Rallycross how ever, doesnt have near the rules, nor requires a cage. So if you want rally cross, go have fun in it and kick some ass.
Loving the car so far, just went threw every page. that WRB looks killer on these cars. cant wait to see the swap all buttoned up.

Thanks man, that's definitely great information to know! Getting to that stage is a very long term goal still. I'm gonna start out with Auto X, get some publicity on my car.
Build my Zwingfilms business, and I'll probably buy a GC8 when I'm ready to start Stage Rally and build that to the correct specifications. That won't be for another several years before I do that though. Maybe more, maybe less.
I'm only 18 right now so I've got a long life ahead of me to make decisions. I want to focus on my business so I can make a steady and strong income so I can support whom ever I
marry....cough cough Alyssa(my girlfriend) and myself. I've got 2 years of college ahead of me to learn more and more about film considering it's my major. Hopefully I can come up big and start filming Rally events
and then my GREATEST long term goal is to eventually film for Subaru of America making commercials. I'm really attached to Subaru....haha but ya.

head gaskets, timing belt, valve cover gaskets, intake manifold gaskets, exhaust mani....etc.
We dropped the motor in without a lift-the same way we pulled it out. Here's some pictures my girlfriend took of me.

A good thing about the Subaru EA motors, they're so freakin' light. Back in the late 1970s my uncle and father worked for a foreign car shop down the street from where I live now, and my uncle owned a late 70s loyale I believe, when the time came to rebuild the engine my father and uncle took it out with their hands like you did and carried it into my uncle's basement to rebuild it hahahahaha
I also had the pleasure to remove the 5 speed transmission from 96L parts car, by myself, with my hands. So I kind of know where you're coming from, it feels amazing once you finally get it out! haha

AutoX is a ton as fun as well. and a cheap sport to get into. and with a good tune and a car that spools well, your leggy will be a great car for some cone smashing. Would highly suggest building it around that sport. also a good racing sport to get a little seat time with and find some limits with out much fear of any major damage.
GC's will always be a good place to start with a rally car too. Two main things to focus on when building a rally car. Choose a class you want to compete in, learn the rules of that class, and build the car to spec for that class. Second, Make sure you can complete the car in a year or less. Safety rules change in rally as technology gets better. Last thing you want to do is buy a $700 piece of safety equipment, but 2 years later by the time your car finally gets finished, its outdated and wont pass tech. A good example that just happened this year. They changed the safety standards on roll cages, so the absolute most expensive safety part in everyones car isnt going to be useable any more here soon. immediately all new cars have to be built to the new rules, old cars they are still allowing to run a couple more years before they are forced to redo their cages.
besides the cost of the car, stage rally is just an expensive sport to stay in. 150 bucks a year for a regional rally licence (your co driver has to pay that as well)
gas to travel to Olympia, Oregon, and Possibly Idaho if you want to run the 3 main events in our region. Gas to race for the weekend, food, sleep arangments, event entry fee, broken parts, getting good friends to help you pit crew, to someone with out a decent job, just completing the car isnt winning the battle lol. its 8 grand to get into it, and 8 grand to stay into it almost haha. Not trying to detour you by any means, I'd hightly suggest it to anyone. But its a lot of work, time, and money. Just be prepared heading into it and dont think its as easy as what your doing right now.
most of all, good luck on the college and goals. as someone who was 18 with goals like that and pissed em all away. cant tell you how much i regret it lol. its been a struggle ever since then.

Well I'm gonna buy a Turbo inlet at BNW and I need a fuel pump<---those are just the parts I need left. Beside some hoses and other problems I may run into.
I have one month to finish this project or I probably will have to sell my car or put it in storage. I'm going off to college in August.
What needs to be done:
-I need to bolt in the brake and clutch pedals
-Figure out the wiring<---why my cluster or anything won't light up.
-Bolt the VF52 to the uppipe/downpipe/tmic/and connect all the oil lines
-Connect all the necessary hoses to the turbo inlet and everywhere else.
-Install the new fuel pump.
That's pretty much all I can think of.

07-11-2012, 03:01 AM
I HAVE EXACTLY 50 DAYS TO FINISH THIS SWAP. Starting tomorrow, I will be working on getting the car done until it's finished!
If anybody else would like to make a long drive over here to help out-PLEASE speak up.
We could have one day where several of you that have extensive knowledge and good mechanical skills come out. We could buy some drinks,
food, and all hang out while we work on the whip. Please contact me if you want to help :D I know I've said this a million times but I'm dyin here.

-Figure out the wiring<---why my cluster or anything won't light up. This is the biggest problem you NEED to figure out.

-Connect all the necessary hoses to the turbo inlet and everywhere else.
-Install the new fuel pump. .5 hours
It sounds like you cant stay focused on finishing one thing. If you hit a road block, work on something you know and can finish. I'm building a JDM 180sx for a customer that was converted to AWD and also completely striped (0% wiring, motor, trans, susp, and interior). It's a big project, but I dont let it slow me down. 50 days is a lofty goal, but do able if yyou can stay focused.

I would say focus on getting the car running. Forget the performace upgrades. Especially since any more than stock power levels and that trans will snap that trans like a old ladys hip in the rodeo.

Ok guys!
I installed all of the new gasket, bolted on the AP up pipe to the VF52 as well as the Perrin Divorced down pipe
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/07/1Turbo-1.jpg
Then I installed the Perrin Turbo Inlet! To my very suprise, it was very easy!
I just unbolted the turbo solenoid bracket and it slipped right in!
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/07/2TurboInlet-1.jpg
This is awesome. My stock fuel pump next to a 2010 STI fuel pump I got from this Guardline wrapped wagon at BNW for $50.
After 14 years, all Subaru did was make the fuel pump smaller, and it fit perfectly!! No issues. I love how consistent Subaru is.
This install was also a piece of cake.

So, I traded my
-blown VF40
-my old Xentec HID boxes w/o bulbs
-and a crappy "Nitrous" brand-turbo gauge
for this Junior Sprint Sparco seat from some 16 year old kid
Now I finally have a drivers seat! Now I just need racing harnesses.

-Fuel Filter Bracket
-Lower Radiator Grommet
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2012/12/IMG_1130-1.jpg
besides all that, here's what's left mechanically...
-Clutch cable installation needs to be complete

-Install ABS Speed sensors(unless we can find another way with the ECU)
-Install Fuel Pump Controller
-Wire Front Door Window Motors
-Wire Rear Wiper Motor washer
-Install New Front Wheel Bearings
-Install/Mount Dimmer
-Install Starter Ground Bracket
-Install Fuel Filter Bracket

^Agreed.
But honestly how many 300whp ej205s have you seen. the majority of the ej20s ive seen with forged pistons and manly rods usually dont break 250-275whp. 300whp is a ambitious goal. I personally have never ever seen one break 380whp (with my own eyes, not saying it csnt be done or someone hasnt done it.)
Im super jazzed gor ya bro, looks like its coming along nicely.
I do want to point out to anyone wanting to attempt a swap
This is a perfect example of how most swaps go.
Over time and over budget then it gets sent to a professional to be finished. I dont want to discourage anyone but just notice that this car was projected to be done in like 2 months and its been like 13 or somehing. And there are so many unexpected expenses. Fast cheap or good...
You can pick 1...2 if your lucky.. Rallywagon chose to have a high
Quality swap. Which is was a good choice.

This I can agree with.
I have seen people start crazy projects and these are people that do it for a living and they sometimes toss the car back in storage and let it sit, sometimes for years. My Volvo is a perfect example of this. I have not driven it in 13 years because I bit off way more then I could chew at the time.

Drivetrain loss:
RWD: 10-15%
FWD: 15%
AWD: 25%
400hp x .25 = 100hp
400hp - 100hp = 300hp
Depending on year model, your EJ25 is producing 165hp at the flywheel, so...
165hp x .25 = 41.25hp
165hp - 41.25hp = 123.75hp

Alright guys, I pulled out of Outback, their time management SUCKS, don't take your
car their unless you expect to wait a year for them to do anything...Anyways, I'm happy they
got the wiring all done correctly, I guess I'm missing some immobilizer parts though so until
I find these parts the motor won't fire because of the RFD chip in the key not connecting to a receiver
Here's a video of the cluster startup

Yesterday I installed that Sparco, I installed the steering column plastic black plate and blinker/wiper arms, and the radio works great too!
Here's the revised list of what all needs to be done and how I plan on accomplishing it.
MISSING PARTS
-DRL Module
-Key Reciever, or ignition switch
-05 abs sensors
-New brake lines
-Fuel pump controller
-New Front wheel bearings and Brakes
(buying '07 WRX HUBS with brakes, STOPTECH Rotors, and Hawkpads ALL 4 F & R)
-Mount Dash dimmer switch
-Radiator hoses
-Breather hoses
-Anti theft box +key sensor + dealer programming before start up
Or, aftermarket ECU w/ custom wiring would also work, 04 fxt or STI ECU.
-also a MT cluster would be nice.
Left to be done-
-Mechanical Clutch cable install
-fuel pump install
-either install 05 sensors and new brake lines or Plump/delete
-Front and rear hubs/brakes install
-rear wiper motor wiring
-turbo lines/tmic/turbo inlet lines/intake install.
The list of what's left to be done has gotten much smaller!
I think I'm gonna try and do it all myself, and if I can't finish it,
or if I run into more serious problems, I'll take it to Josh Long at RooPair

Since it's been back I've accomplished some things:
-I finished the Mechanical Clutch installation
-I found and installed the Steering column back plate
-Installed Blinker/Windshield wiper arms
-Purchased DRL Module
-Purchased Fuel Pump Controller
and I've been chatting with a guy in Minnesota about buying his:
-Brembo's
-5x100 Brembo adapter

I bet the reality of being this close to having an even sicker car is setting in.

Honestly that's been on my mind all day today-it's almost like, the fact that
it took so long for anything to happen makes the hype disappear and makes this seem
like the extra power won't even be worth it. But today I thought more about how..."holy crap, this
thing is actually gonna be sick" haha-this motor was built for a car that currently weighs 500 more pounds
then my Legacy-not to mention the VF52-bigger turbo. and with as low of a compression rate as this motor
is, the tune-ablity is gonna rock. I'm praying that the motor doesn't have any issues-the Crank spins fine so I know
I did the timing correctly therefore I won't have to deal with bent valves, now I just need to do a compression test
and plug in my OBDII to a laptop to check that my sensors are running correctly. I really am optimistic
that this motor will run great but I'd be really upset if it didn't...not gonna be excited to tear into it again...
Anyways, today I installed all of the fluids-didn't do the fuel pump yet but I don't really know why Outback said it wasn't correctly installed.
The 2004 STI ECU was sent out at 8AM this morning from Minnesota so hopefully it'll be here by Friday-that's the last step on my list.
Please if you care too, pray that everything goes smoothly. It's been a really long and difficult wait for me-over 500 days I think..
Thanks!

Alright so today I cranked the motor several times to see how it responds(even though I haven't swapped yet to the '04 STI ECU from the '05 LGT)
and it cranked well and there seemed to be no issue and the fuel pump worked but the immobilizer system kept spark from occurring. To verify this
we pulled a plug to see and there was zero spark.

The Dash went in pretty well even though I still am using my '98 Dash Reinforcement bar. It's not 100% secure
seeing that on the sides it's about 2 inches shorter and the back lifts up and down but this is a pretty easy fix.
When it comes time to put my roll cage in-getting this dash to be secured will be really easy to do.
So today I'm gonna rewire my harness and plug it into the ECU! wish me luck
rallywagon
03-24-2013, 02:25 AM
I need help, I rewired everything correctly for the new ECU - plugged it in and now my car is put into alarm mode. Just for people who don't know, I have an 05 LGT harness (immo system) merged with the 98 and I'm using an 04 ECU to bypass the immobilizer system, I tried turning the key 3 times within 5 seconds but it did nothing. I don't have a wireless key fab either so that sucks. Anyways, before the at was put into alarm mode the car starter cranked and the fuel pump worked but no spark because of the immobilizer system. Now that it's in alarm mode and the new 04 STI ECU is installed-I don't get crank or fuel... Don't know what to do.
EDIT:
Here's the post I made at a new thread:
Alrighty, so basically, I'm in the FINAL steps of turning my car on for the first time and I'm having some difficulty.
Here is some information of how the car is set up;
My '1998 Subaru Legacy has an EJ255 motor in it. The wiring is an '05 LGT Wiring Harness merged with some
'98 Accessories and the '05 obviously comes with an immobilizer system. When I bought this harness/immo. system,
the guy forgot to give me a lot of the parts-So instead of repurchasing it all over again and then having to take my
car to a dealer to get it programmed, I decided to just buy an '04 STI ECU to bypass the immo. System. With this new
ECU there are somethings you have to rewire and you have to take the canbus system into account. I rewired Ignition,
fuel signals, I cut A/C, I cut the two Immobilizer wires, and I rewired some other random things that needed to be rewired.
Maybe cutting the immobilizer wires was something I shouldn't have done but just let me know.
Here's the DILEMA;
Before I got my '04 STI ECU, I tried cranking my motor with just the '05 LGT ECU plugged in just for the fun of it.
The motor/starter would crank, and the fuel pump primed each time and squirted fuel to the motor but no spark due
to the immobilizer issue I was having, when my '04 STI ECU arrived in the mail-I rewired/repinned the necessary things
and plugged my harness in, after I did that my cluster('05 cluster) illuminated a Security light and now my motor won't
crank and it won't fuel. I did some research and found that if the car feels like it's security is being breached-it will cut
fuel, crank, and spark. So I tried the opening closing your door, turning your key 3 times in 5 seconds thing and nothing
has worked so far. Also I don't have a key fab or power locks right now.
If you have any information or advice, please leave your response below and if you feel you have an extensive amount
of knowledge on this, feel free to give me a call any time of the day at (253)720-8945
I'm just a guy who wants his Subaru back :( She hasn't been driven for a year and a half and I have this beastly motor in her

The immobiliser is bypassed with the 04 ecu...you aren't using a chipped key to match the immobiliser system with the sti ecu? When I worked for toyota, a key had to be registered/programmed to the ecu to start it otherwise it would just crank.
Might be worth a shot, try disconnecting the negative cable with the key in the on position, wait 30 sec and reconnect. My '97 gt will just flash the lights if the battery is reconnected without the key in the ignition. Can't remember if it won't start or not.
Kinda hard to guess what's going on cause of the modifications. I'll give it some thought and let you know if I can think of anything else to try. Also make sure your battery is in good shape.
rallywagon
03-24-2013, 06:19 AM
Thanks man, I'll try that out in the morning, do you think that if I took it to a shop that has a computer-they can just reflash my ECU to match my key? The key
I currently have has the RFD chip inside married to the '05 ECU but I didn't think that mattered if you get a new ECU...idk thoughts?
Red85Celica
03-24-2013, 06:26 AM
Subaru might be able to program the key, but I guess the car has to be towed there...and if its anything like Toyota you will need a master key to program it or any spare sub/valet keys. I am not sure if there is a way to program the key without a scan tool. Also not sure if an aftermarket shop can do it.
Just out of curiosity, can you plug the ecu that you first tried back in and try to start the car a few times, and if you have access to a code reader see if there is a diagnostic code for unmatched key code or something else.
Red85Celica
03-24-2013, 06:41 AM
I wonder if subaru uses an immobiliser ecu like Toyota... It's a seperate one from the actual engine ecu. That's what the key should actually be programmed to. Sorry for the irratic thoughts here I'm thinking of this stuff sitting here on my lunch break.
I cut the two Immobilizer wires, and I rewired some other random things that needed to be rewired.
Maybe cutting the immobilizer wires was something I shouldn't have done but just let me know.
Was this done prior to trying to start the engine with the 05 LGT ECU? If so maybe reconnect these wires and retry.
are you in Dupont or Seattle? I am not even sure where dupont is...
rallywagon
03-24-2013, 02:33 PM
I'm located in DuPont, and yes I've unplugged and plugged back in the LGT ECU and the STI ECU and tried it without either, after i noticed that it wouldn't crank I cut the immobilizer wires. I'd be willing to tow it to a dealer of that's what it takes

dont send it to the dealer.
no cranking is usually fairly easy to diagnose even on swaps. because the starter is controlled by a VERY simple system.
if you have a check engine light when key is on
this means the ECU is getting power and can be connected to.
if you dont have a CEL got some wiring and fuses to check.
as far as wiring goes to crank our cars, you basically need
1) check engine light.
2) connection between battery and ignition switch.
3) connection between ign. switch and starter relay
4) connection between starter relay and starter selinoid (on starter)
5) connection between ecu and clutch switch.
6) connection between clutch switch and starter relay.
7) connection between ecu and starter relay.
8) (+) and (-) cables to the starter.
9) connection between ECU and ign. switch

said whoever got to their shop first was able to pick it up for free and it just happened to fit my car nearly perfectly.
Now I just need to get a passenger side skirt and a lip.
Brad - Thanks, I pulled my fender liners so I'm sittin pretty solid

Alright, since I didn't receive any crank or fuel after rewiring and installing the new ECU,
I borrowed Kody Cannadays-The guy with the white lifted Legacy.
The ECU didn't make a difference so yesterday I decided to completely start over on my
B137 harness which is also merged to a very important wire coming from B135
From reading through the '05 LGT wiring schematic/manual I discovered that this one green
and red wire controls not only your fuel pump relay, but not 1 but all four ignition coils.
So, were back on a roll-I bought an '04 STI Pigtail set off ebay for $50 and pulled B137 out and
so I taped off each wire, labeled the number and in Google Docs, I typed out the Number, Color, and function
for both the LGT wires and STI wires. My car is down at a friends house in Yelm so I can't be working on it all the time,
but yesterday I got decently far.
FYI, the reason I'm using a whole new pigtail-is because it was more reliable than relying on the pins I switched around
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2013/04/pigtails1_zps06be32f6-1.jpg
I wasn't able to finish the LGT side of things because I had to get home

When I become 200% positive that I did everything correctly, I'm going to cut/solder/heatshrink/and electrical tape
and I'm going to make sure all of my grounds are good. I really hope that this solves the problem..otherwise I don't know
what else to do beside spend more money-send 2 untouched ones to Brian at iWire and end up spending another $1k...
Lets just hope that that's not the case...I'm just a guy who wants to drive his car...that's all.

So...I can't seem to make enough progress to keep my momentum going with this '04 ECU.
Honestly, it just complicates things and is waisting my time...so-Mike at PIA just told me that
he could deactivate the immobilizer system no problem-with that being said, yesterday I rewired
it all back to '05 and got rid of the '04 setup. I regained my fuel prime and crank and after the immobilizer
system is inactive-my car will spark and ultimately fire up.
Something strange...after putting everything back to '05-I plugged my test mode connectors together to see
if all the relays were clicking and what not and we found 2 things that weren't good.
1. My Check Engine Light didn't flash at all-it stayed consistently illuminated which is odd
2. My flyby wire(electronic accelerator/throttle control-whatever you wanna call it) didn't buzz like it usually does.
In the meantime with my Legacy not running-I lowered the front end on the WRX with TEIN Lowering Springs
Here's a picture just because I know you all love pictures :)

Not completely true... Many Japanese vintage cars had them as well. I'm American, but my first love was Vintage Volvo's (50's-70's) and it was common to see then on Volvo's. Many people have used them over the years (lots of them in Africa). Mercedes Used they for a long time, up till the 80's. Also, how many of you remember Yellow fogs back in the 80's? It turns out that I have all the pieces required for the 05 setup.....John at Outback I guess didn't know what he was

Yes I got my car to PIA yesterday and successfully everything's been married.
The ECU to Key to Key Receiver to Immobilizer system to Cluster.
We tryed cranking it over and got a great response! My car can't idle quite yet but
it wants too soooo bad.
There are 2 leaks is what it looks like -
A Fuel Leak in a line in the very rear end of the car somewhere
&
There's an Oil Leak coming from the motor somewhere
So far they're both a mystery - I can't exactly pin point them.
Also, my fly by wire isn't making any noise anymore and on the Subaru Select Monitor
it said that my Electronic Throttle Control isn't working which is really odd
Basically - my theory of why it's not firing right up and idling is because my car is
not getting enough air in the mixture and I'm losing oil pressure.

I agree. If you no for sure you have spark move on to fuel. Once u no for sure you have fuel on to air. If you have all 3 your car will start. Im heard of stories were people stuff intakes, turbos, ect with rags for crap not to fall in and actually forget them in there. Your main concern right now is to make sure you have the 3 essential things (fuel, air, spark) that a motor needs to start/run.

If you are getting codes for your throttle control I would start with that. I am not too familiar with Subaru fly by wire systems but i know same systems do a quick system check when the key is first cycled by moving the throttle plate through a specific motion. Watch the throttle plate as you cycle the key to see if it moves at all. Also, you can try creating a vacuum leak to see if it will start. If it is in fact the TB not opening enough to let the engine start creating a vacuum leak will provide enough air to the engine that it should start up.

99% of ALL DOHC engines require you to take camshafts out to get head bolts out.
cant hate on them too much, since they were designed to be worked on by skilled professionals with the proper tools...
never seen it done this way. just curious...
if the jack is holding the exhaust manifold up, which is attached to the head with studs... how are you going to take the head off
with the intake and exhaust manifolds?
congrats on finally getting it started.
rallywagon
04-25-2013, 12:07 AM
Thanks - It was quite simple - I lowered the motor and then put a 2x4 on the jack which then supported
just the head- I loosened up the headers on both sides and used a crowbar to push the headers down and I
used a bungie chord to hold/lift the intake manifold up. Then once I got the exhaust manifold studs out from
the headers I was able to pull the head out. Today I installed a new head gasket and slipped the head right back
in. I haven't torqued down the head bolts yet though because I'm missing a 1/2" drive - 3/8" adapter - I only
have a 1/2" drive torque wrench and a 12 point 14mm socket that's 3/8" drive

Sorry for not updating - that night that I wrote that last comment I had gotten that adapter and
then torqued down the head-reinstalled everything.. But I installed the timing belt wrong...
I don't know if it has to do with me staying up at 3 in the morning to get it done, but my compression
now reads: DS: 80-80 PS: 90-90 So that really really sucks...
My plan is to now pull the whole motor, take both of my heads to Delta cams to have them rebuilt
and I'm also planning on having them grind/spray weld my cams to get some power out of this to make it
some what worth it to tear down my block again... I'm not feelin to hot about this.
Should I just get EJ257 heads on craigslist instead? Any thoughts or suggestions?

02_Legacy
05-01-2013, 06:01 PM
don't you spin the motor over by hand before starting it? It saves you from bent valves.
I think that rebuilding your heads would be the way to go because then you know everything is good. Getting used heads can go either way, you may get good ones or you may get heads that need a rebuild anyway.

Fix the heads and leave it alone. Welding and grinding cams is gonna be $$$! That's motor tuned will have plenty of power to roll a gutted wagon around. Dead,Slav and I now have given you this suggestion.
If you change the lift or duration of the cams then you might have interference issue with stock pistons.

Your heads do have avcs and are the same as sti heads. Why buy what you already have? And why dump more money into it when it has not even been started. I have a few machine shops I can recommend you. Go get your heads fixed without spending any extra cash and get your car running. If you feel like u need cams after that then u can always plan for a new project/motor build down the road. Taking your heads to delta right now will end up costing you well over a grand. Believe me iv haf work done with them. They do amazing work buy why keep dumping and dumping more unnecessary $$ into it when its never been ran? Just my advice but hey its your cash so your call ;-)

I would do a leakdown on each cylinder! Then you will be able to make an educated guess if its the HGs, piston rings, or valves! If you get air in the coolant, its HGs. Air out the exhaust or TB, its valves. And air out the dipstick its rings. Or combinations!
My guess since you reported the same numbers on the cylinders in a bank, its HGs. So if thats true whatever you decide to do, it'll improve. But I'd hate to drop $1200 on a pair of heads, even $600, plus soft parts, only to find out my rings were giving up the ghost!
What are the numbers supposed to be on that motor?

Slavik has told you, I have told you, others have told you. Just worry about getting it running. Treat this motor as it has just broke a timing belt of a normal car. Do a stock re-build on the heads and leave the cams alone. Pull it out, pull the heads, take then to the machine shop, get them fixed. Done, thats it.
Doing anything to the bottom end is NOT worth it ether. Doing set of heads is easy, just a bit spendy. Dont even think about the bottom end yet. Splitting a case is not an easy task.
Also, installing cams later, is easy. So just get it running.

have the machine shop possibly do it for me? idk what do you think?
Here's some pictures from today

The reason I'm not getting this stuff done too quickly is because I've been doing so much video/photography
to make money to be able to afford this! Here's a shot I took yesterday in Ellensburg just to show you a little of what I do

You can pick up a leakdown tester from harbor freight for about $30. Its not the best tester quality wise but it will do the job and you dont really need to use it very often so thats what I would buy. You have to do the leakdown test with motor still assembled and timing belt on. There are some very nice youtube videos that explain how to do it. Its simple. And the machine shop cant do a leak down test because you wanna take your heads seperatly from the block or you will have a very nice bill from them for dissasembly. There are 3 machine shops here on pacific. There is one call pacific engine and machine. They are not the cheapest but they are good and do a lot of subaru work. I had a few sets of head done by them. Down side is they are always slammed and might take you some time to get your heads back. There is a shop right behind baxters auto parts on pacific. I had them do some simple things but no head work. They will be cheaper and probobly faster. There is also a machine shop in the napa store on pacific. I can not say anything about their work because iv never used them. They should be fairly cheap tho.

Doing a leakdown is pretty simple, but takes time. You need a compressor that puts out more than 100psi. The tester has 2 gauges, 1 shows the incoming pressure, you dial that to 100psi. The second gauge shows you what your cylinder at TDC is holding. If it shows 80psi, the components are holding 80% OR leaking down 20%. Then its just detective work.... cover the exhaust port with your hand and remove, if you hear noise there's a leak. Do the same with the intake. And the dipstick. The 4th thing to check is to see if you have bubbles appearing in your coolant, but you already pull your motor! I guess you could check at the waterneck, just not the thermostat side!
You could be getting a lil it from a couple or all!
Good luck! I hope to hear the good news soon!
