so, i have this ej22t from my old '94 turbo. i also kept the ecu. i have been trying to sell it, and havent found any takers. i'm thinking about just rebiulding it, in the hopes that someday i will have something to put it in. is there a rebuild kit that is better? i have looked once before, and none of the ones i found seem to have parts for the turbo. what would you do to it to add some more ponies if you were in this situation? i was thinking of doing a port and polish on the heads, and using a dry film lubricant on every moving part, and perts that touch moving parts. are there different cams that i could get? also, it used to be hooked up to an automatic, i will want to hook it up to a manual, what do i need to look into for this?

Do you have the complete wiring harness from the car or just the engine harness and the ecu? without the complete wiring harness it will be difficult to merge with another chassis and still be able to use the stock ecu. Also the stock ecu tends to freak out a bit once you start trying to run a little more boost, it's possible to use it with decent results, but sometimes it will have issues with fuel cutoff and what not. Honestly i would recommend a standalone.

but anyway, as far as the rebuild and turbo go and adding more ponies. ditch the VF11 turbo and get a lightly used TD04 from a wrx. rebuild/reseal the engine however you please. send your cams out to Delta to get reground. go ahead and port and polish the heads, but i wouldn't spend much/any money doing it, the old turbo heads just don't flow that well to begin with so i don't think its worth too much time or money to tinker around with them. Also would want to get some kind of intercooler TMIC of FMIC doesn't really matter, a decent TMIC would be best if using a TD04.

cool thanks. i didn't think about the wiring harness untill we had already taken the body to get crushed. stupid me. what do you mean by a standalone? sorry, i am more comfortable with working on non computer vehicles. on mysubie.com, someone was talking about getting some dohc heads from japan that would fit the ej22t block. i have never heard of this. i know there was talk of the dohc 2.5 heads being a bolt on mod, but i have also read where this rumor was de-bunked.

^ actually any EJ head will bolt onto any EJ block. lots of people are running ej22t blocks with 2.5RS heads, wrx heads, or sti heads. the block of the ej22t is really the only desirable thing about it.

by stand alone i mean stand alone engine management system aka a mess of wires with a new computer that allows you to tune your engine run and operate correctly no matter what you put it into or what you do to the motor.

BBS.legacycentral.org has an insane amount of knowledge and info about the 22t. I honestly wouldn't waste time considering a stock SS swap into any other car, it's not worth it. Like stat said, the block is the only desirable part.

what heads and standalone system would folks on this site recomend?

the information can be found here as well.

i would go with ej25d heads(00-04 legacy heads), and a hydra nemasis standalone.

rallitek makes fully built heads(going to buyt them one day).

^ EJ25D is from 96-99 Legacys, 98 impreza, and 98 Forester.

EJ251 is from the 00-04 legacys

Ryan,

I saw you were already looking at buying heads. You need to slow down and understand what you are doing before you start purchasing stuff. keep in mind when you change the heads, you will likely need to get the matching intake manifold and all of the other stuff that attaches to that as well. The heads pretty much determine everything else that is needed to complete the motor.

That said, slow down and research what you are trying to do. what are your real goals? what is your budget. do you fully understand what you are getting into and what is required to make it work... these are very important things to know before getting into any engine build. have you even gone over to the legacy central yet? That is literally the birth place of ej22t hybrid builds...

i was just trying to gather some info about these heads. the build, if it happens, is some time out yet. i havent been to legacy central in a while. not since my old '94 legacy turbo was in decent shape. i didnt know to get the matching intake. thanks for the info. i will get back on legacy central, as i'm guessing there is new info on there.

there are so many different codes for the ej25 i forget them. thanks for the correction.

Pretty sure the 99-01 imprezas are ej251's too.

Stat is right again, don't jump into a build without enough knowledge, I spent about $7-8k and 2 years doing that and have nothing to show for it besides some cool left over parts.

^ ditto i blew past my original budget on build by a good margin not because of poor planning but because of parts just needing to be replaced

well, i am not going to rebuild the engine anymore. someone came and bought it today! yay! they might even come back and buy the hood and grille from the old legacy turbo.
