So, after hours my brain is fried. Basically I came to the conclusion that

-All EJ series motors are easy to swap but no one has any info on wiring.
-EJ22 seems to be a good motor to rebuild

Thats its.

So ive got a 95 so that would be a ej22 series 1 with the single cam. Obviously single cam doesn't flow as well but I don't care that much. Im interested in just finding another ej22 to rebuild nice and fresh, no crazy build but put money into it were it counts. Then since it is now my daily I will run boost but a minimal amount. No more than 10psi on a rebuilt T25 I have sitting around.

I guess what im trying to get at is if I find a dohc ej22 for cheap I could pick that up and probably swap heads without problems, or could I run dohc? Im not sure what the wiring difference are at this point. Ug, I just don'y really no were to start but I know im gonna need to soon cause my motor is on its way out and Id like to do something or ill just end up selling the car before it finally gives out.

oh yeah, and also the 2.2 is a non interference motor as well correct?

Some years of the ej22 were non-interferance. I think an ej22x is a good motor to boost, like you said cheap and plentiful if something goes wrong. I'm with you about the wiring - basically that part is hard enough that most people aren't willing to share the info, and for others doing the wiring is a source of income, so they wouldn't want to share the info either.

If you want to trudge through it, you should download both your car's fsm (factory service manual) and the one for the wiring harness you want to merge in. Make a spreadsheet showing where connector x wire 17 connects to connector x wire 27 on the new harness, etc. Post questions of where you're confused (because the new harness likely won't have the same amount of wires as the old). Here's a link to most FSM's:

Where are you located? I have a decent set of EJ22T sohc heads - factory tapped for the turbo's oil and coolant - plus the cams are setup for boost. You'd be able to reuse your wiring harness and sensors and intake manifold, but I wouldn't have a clue on how to boost the thing. I don't want to ship, so maybe someone locally would have a set if you're far away. Legacy777 put down nearly 300whp with a stock ej22t block and heads (and a standalone) so they're not as bad as everyone says.

up to 96 it was non-interference, in 97 it changed to an interference motor

the only stock dohc ej22 was the turbo motor in the 22b impreza, your not going to find one around...

10 psi might be a bit too much, depends on the tuning.

adding dohc heads would be a wiring mess, and the ej22t heads have smaller valves than the NA heads...

decent setup imho:

ej22t internals -can be found cheaply and are made for boost
delta torque cam - good idea for turbo builds (great for boost really)
95-96 ej22 to build -that way you get dual port heads and the exhaust work for the turbo wont be as much of a pain

as far as EM someone else should chime in...

EJ22T exhaust valves are 1/16" smaller than the 22E  The benefit being the turbo cams and already plumbed for turbo.

ahh. Good info.

Depending on my finanaces (because this certainly isnt my only car nor is it my favorite) I may or maynot do a legit build. Im still new to engine building but my friend owns Performance Porting and is really good with motor building.
