so this might be the final update for my RS:

The way I see it I have roughly one more year until I move out of my apartment and get a house. Once the move is finished I will be starting my Forester STI project. It should only take roughly 3 months until that is complete and becomes my daily in which case the future of my RS comes in to question. I might give it to my girlfriend, sell it, or strip it down to stock and sell that and the mods separately. Don't get me wrong, I do love this car as does a lot of other people but I'll see to it that it goes to a good home rather than rot in my garage or go to some kid that'll end up ruining it.

Find something to plasti-dip, maybe side mirrors or wheels or something. Plus its not permanent and can be bought at home depot..

its $6 a can. It would depend on what your doing on how many cans you would need. My brother did 2 motorcycle wheels with 1 can and said he has plenty left.

Update finally. Ended up you guys were right about the wrx engine, guy is a scammer and got me and 3 friends with either selling parts and never provided said parts or buying parts and never paying so this weekend I'm heading to pick up a vf11 turbo and up pipe from a fellow member. I'll be trying to source a tmic with bov and might be getting a downpipe next week or so so I can hopefully toss on a turbo onto my ej22e over thanksgiving break. Stay tuned!!

What a shame. Talk to Jason about getting some parts. I'm not sure if he has anything laying around. Also check the York, Pa group page for any parts for sale.

Update.
Found out the hard way that my oil drain plug seal went Mia. Engine is fine but oil is empty for idk how long.

Also will probably find someone to do the cheap uel mod in the link below and am contemplating 1.8 heads for a high compression build until I can have all the downtime and cash flow for a turbo build

The rs really needs more Subaru rumble and $300 for headers is rubbish

Huffer
01-07-2013, 12:01 PM
Didn't you have a low oil pressure warning light?

GTDrifter
01-07-2013, 01:17 PM
Nope. Absolutely nothing. There's no oil on the dipstick. The oil light comes on at startup like usual but turns off so the light does work.

I got a new oil drain plug with seal, oil, and a filter so I'll be doing that once the car cools down

And yes I know the drill...shame shame for running a car without oil tisk tisk lol

GTDrifter
01-07-2013, 06:28 PM
Alright oil drain plug was leaking a little but under further investigation it turned out to be the valve cover gasket. Joyous

At least its the passenger side so there's more room

I ran into a small issue as well...the rs is too low for me to fit under it. It is also too low for my ramps even with ramp extenders. The bumper hits the front of the ramp and I fear of ripping it off. Not that I'd care I just don't feel like fixing extra crap. It is also too low to use my floor jack in the front. The jack doesn't lift the car high enough so the routine is as follows

Jack up each side and shove ramp under tire. Drive forward to get back on the ramp. When finished coast down slowly...very very slowly.

And honestly my car isn't that much lower than stock

Get two small pieces of 2x4 the width of your tires, and drive on top of them. Then jack up your car. Only someone who was lowered would learn this trick. :smt005

01-10-2013, 10:25 PM

Alright. Got the gaskets for both sides since that's all auto zone sells. Went to replace the gaskets to find a cracked valve cover. Off to the junkyard for a new one and not only got that but on the same car pulled brand new NGK spark plug wires. Found another car with KGB gr2s but didn't have the tools to pull them.

Cars all fixed and I'll get to see how nice it drives again.

Found some cheap exhaust piping and having welding class this semester I might make some single port uels for the RS

Also the RS will be getting a rally light pod. It will be custom made by me for my senior project and will either be ABS or Tegris which is a 100% polypropylene thermoplastic composite which is comparable to carbon fiber. I will not be making a DIY but if someone wants me to make one I will. It uses the thermoforming process and I don't believe many people have access to the equipment.

I will be posting minor progress updates on the rally pod in the build thread but nothing too technical

GTDrifter
02-19-2013, 07:24 AM
they're borla so they cracked. Big surprise right?

The guy I got them from said his friend rewelded them but when I looked them over before installation I noticed he missed a spot and the welds were of poor quality anyway.

I'll be taking them into the shop today and I'll be welding every seam with 7018 rods so they shouldn't be cracking anytime soon

I still put them on for the ride up. Nice and loud and inspired me to start a track pipe and get my stromung mid pipe fixed up.

GTDrifter
02-19-2013, 12:51 PM
Headers have been removed and will be re-welded around 5pm. Whoever "re-welded" these initially did such a poor job.

They missed a spot and the welds look like barf. They weren't even fully welded just patch with what looked like metal bubblegum and ketchup

So some sad sad news. My RS will no longer be running the Stromung. As much as I love this exhaust my girls wagon is in dire need of some Subie Rumble. She has the headers but it's not enough to get passed the cats and muffler. That being said we bought a 3 inch BPM axleback which I am working on an adapter to run. The stromung will be put onto her outback after I mock it up and make a section to extend it out far enough, don't worry it'll be a bolt on piece and will not affect the stromung. A big thanks to nikolaus.conrad for the idea! Thanks bro

Dang, need help?
Not Saturday. I'm just taking a suitcase and car parts. Cassey and my parents are packing the truck and coming out Friday. I start Monday but the apartment isn't ready til Friday so I'll be living out of a hotel.

Made it to Michigan and the first 3 days of work are pretty good. Traffic is scary so I'm looking at buying a beater for a daily. While my car is sitting I could finally get around to fixing it and tidying up the halfassed wiring I never cleaned up

Make sure that beater has good suspension (for the shitty pot holes) and can easily do 75-90 MPH on the highways if its anywhere within a 30-50 mile radius of Detroit! I loved the 70 MPH speed limit when I lived there.

Cassey had an interview in my department at Ford and the way it sounds she might be getting the job just as long as no other supervisors hear of the position, well know for sure by the end of July. If she does get it then that'll leave me with a couple extra dollars to start putting towards a jdm front clip with engine and trans. I do have some mods in mind once we get some saved up.

If you have any suggestions for mods post them. I already have a new bumper and hood to replace the damaged ones

Today was a bad day and marked a huge setback in my turbo build. Now I can tell you guys that the new part I ordered has been shipped and should be here soon. It's a brand new 3" exhaust including up pipe, down pipe, and catback. It was next to nothing shipped on ebay.

Today I wanted to start mocking things up. Got my breakerbar out and removed the driver side air filter bracket that I have had trouble with since I got my short ram. Went to put the fxt tmic on and set the vf11 turbo in to see how I want to route a modified up pipe and there's quite a few issues:
tmic interferes with strut bar
tmic y-pipe hits a/c lines and firewall
bov hits the throttle assembly
cruise control will have to be removed to fit the down pipe

from here I dont know what to do. I'm thinking of getting a new tmic but have to know what exactly will fit. wrx and sti tmic are bigger and if the fxt one is already causing problems than those would just be a waste of time and money. I could go with a fmic but will have to go through the hassle of removing my bumper and butting portions of the bumper to fit it. Not to mention my gt-b limited style foglights will block it anyway.

If anybody could help out let me know.

i dont know about the strut bar, but i do know people have either deleted the ac and the lines for it, or taken a big hammer to hammer the firewall back to give enough space for it. I would look at slavik's build, i know his is a swap, but it's in an rs thats running a top mount i believe.

No problem, I know it has to fit. Im pretty sure some people notch out a section of the firewall, and some just use a BFH. I also think i remember seeing something about a 90 degree elbow from a 1st gen legacy to work with the intercooler but i could be wrong. Either way, dont give up!!! lol

You should be able to fit the fxt top mount without any issues. i had a wrx top mount fit I there and its taller. Its quite a bit of work to make everything fit but its easily doable. If u have any questions fell free to pm me. Also my journal has a bit of info on turboing the ej251. U will also need a split second voltage clamp to trick your map sensor when boosting. I have the one from my build and don't need it anymore since I'm swapping. Pm me if u need it.

Long time update. Changed the oil, topped off the coolant and windshield washer fluid, and got Bosch Icon wiper blades. Got a new axle that I have to install yet. Also got 05 wrx wheels painted purple wrapped in blizzaks for the winter.

Today I got a rear window vane spoiler. It was sitting on craigslist for a while so we drove the 45 minutes to pick it up. During the trip the future wife and myself had a long discussion on the future of our cars. The next step for the RS is a turbo swap and coilovers, then the bodywork to get done. I still don't know what swap to put in. The ej257 is too expensive, the ej20g and ej20h both have weak bottom ends. I hear good and bad about the ej205 and I wanna do more research on the ej20k. It was decided that there is not much left to do exterior wise so fix it up nice to make it look good again. It will be getting a 3inch exhaust in preparation for the swap once I make the adapter. The outback will be getting an H6 swap and possibly a turbo kit down the road. It will be getting the stromung exhaust from the RS or my BPM 3inch cannon I have had laying around for a year or so now. The Justy will be getting a turbo and maybe my stromung exhaust.

Any help on the perfect swap choice will be accepted.

Little bit of an update.

Parts continue to pile up, both replacement and upgrades. The plan is to go back to my home state in may for the stpr rally in wellsboro and while in the area get the legacy wagon running to bring out to Michigan. Once we get back the rs will be going up on jackstands for a while. I wanna get the rust fixed, install the new parts, and do some upgrading to my handling, possibly a turbo, and brake upgrade. Maybe fender flares and some interior stripping, and debating on racing seats and a harness bar with 4 point harnesses.

With some new inspiration I have really got into this ej22et build. Especially today, after thinking that this form of engine has plagued my life since 2007 when I purchased my first Subaru which the dealer swapped in a phase 1 ej22e to my RS that the same dealer swapped in a phase 2 ej22e. I must defeat this engine and its singleport atrocity.

Its been a while so let's tally everything I have right now:
Vf11 turbo
Forester XT top mount intercooler
3 inch turboback exhaust
Ej22t catless up pipe so I can cut it apart and make one that goes around the crossmember
Blow off valve
Boost gauge

What I just ordered:
New boost gauge
Braided stainless steel feed line with fittings
Braided stainless steel drain line
1\2" tubing for vac lines and water lines
Tee fittings for tapping the water lines into existing heater core lines
Tee fittings for hooking up the vac lines
90 degree elbow to attach the turbo to the intercooler

Things left to order:
Split second vc3-100 voltage clamp
12:1 fuel management unit
1\2" barbed fittings for attaching vac lines to intake
Straight intake tubing for the intake
90 degree elbow to attach intake tubing to the turbo
3 90 degree exhaust elbows for the up pipe
A ton of hose clamps

Than comes the install

Voltage clamp is should be here before this weekend. The fmu is in the works. All that's left is 2 barb fittings which I'm buying tonight and some hose clamps. And an intake.

Up pipe is welded and painted. I'm hoping to do the install in the next week or 2. I'm planning on starting the detailed diy tomorrow night.

Been months since my last update. Not much has changed with this car (if you have followed up with my other builds you notice a pattern, the model a is taking priority). Been thinking about the next steps for my RS:

install my coilovers
install my sti roof spoiler
22b widebody kit
new paint or vinyl wrap
Rota grids
roll cage
new drivetrain (possibly from a jdm front clip)

Then buying a second gen sedan and swapping in my diy turbo drivetrain from my rs and use it as a daily.

That's the plan, but plans change over time.

My fiance was awesome enough to get me the 22b widebody kit for Christmas! So I'll start work on repairing my fenders, then installing the widebody and working on figuring out what to do paintwise. This will take a long while.

The mock up was rough, the kit will fit better once I start removing things like bump strip, side skirt, and tail light.

Ordered a set of Sports Bronze Rota Grids 17x9 with a +35 offset. I'm looking at maybe running 255/40 to have as close to the same tire circumference as stock without stretching the tire (250/40 is only about 0.3mm off on circumference but the tires has to be stretched whereas 255/40 is only off by 12.2mm or about 0.48 inches) Therefore the speedometer still reads roughly the same speed.

Yes everyone runs these but I had some options on wheels and with building this car for autocross I would want a wheel that I would feel safe with. I was looking at some xxr 522s but the spokes look too thin for me to want to take a sharp corner with. I looked at a couple used wheels but grids are my favorite style wheels and there was a sale on them. I'll take pics on when they arrive. They should be here wednesday but due to the weather I'll say they'll be here in a week.
