Did you ever think to drain and change the transmission fluid?

sounds like the nut that holds 5th in place is loose, drain the fluid and mark sure there is no chunks of metal floating around.

to fix you have to pull transmission out the remove transfer case off the rear of the transmission and replace the nut, if that's the problem

for most people this is a "the shop fixed it and I payed the bill" kind of problem due to the complexity

turns out yesterday that my 5th gear is completely gone. it will engage but if i accellerate or decellerate it falls right out of gear. =[!

always late to these things.. I wonder if mine is the same (nut backed off or 5th is gone)

I'm not trying to save the tranny or anything it's just that at 60 mph I'm around 3200 which is a tad high.

Mine thing is I can lt the clutch out while sitting still and I have no sounds what so ever in 5th it's like it's still in neutral.

I guess I need to buy 2 12mm wrenches to take the driveshaft off

but all I can guess is..

1.) bent/ broken shift fork
2.) nut backed off
3.) synco
4.) gear is smooth
