Im looking to put on a larger oil filter on my car and wondering if anyone upgraded to a bigger size. If so what filter and perhaps a part number?

Why?

Bigger oil capacity - keeps oil in the system for longer etc. It's kind of a cheap mans dry sump solution - the filter is higher than the pan, which means you run less of the possibility of starving the engine on a high g turn for example. I had friends who raced regularly in NZ that would "overfill" their Impreza WRX/STi's or run larger filters to combat this. They'd also install higher flowing fuel pumps to fight fuel starvation on high-g sweepers or chicago-box style chicanes.

Yes oil capacity, I know its not much but its that much more.

Friend of mine told me that the Porsche 944 2.5 and 3.0 models use a compatible filter. Well I bought one, and indeed it does. It's about twice as long as stock, so there's more capacity but it'd be a royal pain if I still had the oem oil sandwitch cooler.

Part numbers or year of the car Mike?

I used the K&N HP-4001, told the parts guy I had a 1989 Porsche 944 2.5L. Just looked at K&N's website, apparently that part# is for all 944's with the 3.0L, and certain years with the 2.5L (no oil filter is listed for some of those years).

Comes on all turbo EJ's that I know about, except 92-94 SS & TW's. The style in the pic is what my turbo motors came with, my old Forester with the tow package had the coolant line going to the lower radiator port, instead of the water pump.

As you can see, a long filter on that thing would make it a pain to get the motor in and out, lol, so I removed mine.

Had no clue, always thought all EJ25's used the same size filter.

@ Mike-tracy - DAMN!!! That sandwich adapter is MASSIVE! I don't have to worry bout that though, I don't have one.

Note that the bigger filters don't have the right opening pressures for the anti-drainback valve for the subaru H4 engines. It needs to be around 20-25psi, most cars are around 10-15psi.

True but most aftermarket manufacturers will use around the same psi strength on all their filters. Look into Royal Purples oil filter, it seems to be built pretty sturdy, Im going to try one soon, next oil change.

I thought the one for my eg33 was a little larger, but i don't remember for sure. I'm pretty sure it was a different part number at any rate.

what about the new 3.6s? are theirs any larger?

I've been running the H6 filter for about 3 years now on my Ej25 - no problems what-so-ever + the H6 filter is way bigger than the Honeywell made filters, and quite a bit bigger than the stock Tokyo-Roki filters (the old black filter Subaru used to carry). Oh yeah they are made by Tokyo-Roki too, have the same drain back valve and they fit just fine with Borla headers.

H6 = Subaru OE # 15208 AA 031

I believe the Denso part # is 150-1006 for the H6... will try it on my STi motor

Regarding the Wix 51334, it is the same length as a stock fitment one (51365) but the case is larger in diameter (the gasket is the same diameter). ive always used them in 90's EJ subarus, but i dont think it fits on newer ones that have less room around the header

Im ordering a K&N 944 filter, Im torn between RP and Redline oil though.... hmmm

rougeben83
03-03-2011, 01:20 AM
If I had to chose, Redline. RP has a lot of hype too it but the UOA's I have seen of it aren't all that impressive. It's a good oil for drag racing where you make a few passes, trailer the car back home, then change the oil, but on a car that will see daily use it's sheers down a little too fast. Actually, the government made them stop advertising the +horsepower claims that they used to have to lol.

If you want another suggestion for "boutique" motor oils, look into Amsoil.

Another "trick" for increased oil capacity is to run the oil dipstick from a turbo EJ25. If you have an older N/A EJ25, with the large oil pan (no cut-out to fit the header like on the newer EJ25s), then running the turbo dipstick will mean that FULL is about 1qt more than it used to be.

The older N/A EJ25 pans look like the one in the top right in this post (http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showpost.php?p=27383408&postcount=36) over on NASIOC. The turbo EJ25 pans are half cut away for header clearance, like the other 3 pans. (I think the newer N/A EJ25 pans are the same as the turbo ones, since they went to the header that wraps around the front of the pan.) The spec'd oil fill is basically the same - 4.x quarts - so the oil level in the turbo pan is higher. Running the turbo dipstick (which is shorter than the N/A dipstick) puts your FULL level in the pan the same place it is on the WRX and STI.

Basically, it's like overfilling the pan a bit (as Huffer mentioned), but with an actual mark to fill to. :)

Yes it wont fit with the UEL header. Stock header should be fine, and MAYBE the EL header not sure at this point.

alright so it looks like I will go with the H6 filter then

I just did a oil change on my BK this passed weekend and I've ALWAYS bought a mobil1 filter, but this time so I bought a FRAM filter to try it out and it has a little grip thing at the bottom of the filter that makes it easier to take'em out. The FRAM filter is almost twice the size of the MOBIL1 filter, just wanted to throw that out there.

for you that use the smaller filter (wix 51365) you can use the wix 51357. same diameter just a inch longer. or if you use the larger wix 51334. you can use the wix 51347, its about a inch longer
