View Full Version : 5x100 vs 5x114.3?

just started wondering what the difference is between a 5x100 bolt pattern and a 5x114.3. Obviously the size of the bolt circle but is there a reason why they put a bigger bolt circle hub on the STI? like performance or structural or something?

sorry if this has been asked but i did a search in google and didnt find a good comparison.

Ive always wondered the same thing. I think its performance/ strength related because a lot of the sports cars use it. STi, 350z, 370z etc.

I don't know if this is the reason but it would be stronger to have a bigger bolt circle. Becuase the bolts are placed in a bigger circle there will be a bigger space between any 2 holes, but it would take alot to break out the center even in a 5x100 so it doesn't really seem like the reason.

The Sti's with 5x114's use a bigger and stronger wheel bearing. My guess is reliability.

But... the SVX uses that bolt spacing and wheel bearing failures are common on that model.

Svx also weighs a lot more though. Sti is approx. 2500lb whereas the svx is approx. 3500lb.

No STI has ever weighed less than 2800lbs. That was the GC8 chassis. The GD models weighed around 3200lbs, the current ones around 3300lbs.

Thread topic wise, the change allowed for bigger wheel bearings/stouter hub, but primarily it allows easier wheel fitment as the 5x114.3 is a more prevalent bolt pattern used by Japanese and US manufacturers...

Yeah 04-present STi's are 3200-3300lbs but a lot of the extra weight it in the hand built STi tranny, DCCD and front and rear LSD's.

A larger hub rotates less revolutions in proportion to the wheel so it would wear slower or you could just have taller wheels? lol Also it can handle more torque easier being farther out on the wheel its not much but I'm sure it makes a difference.
