I am having some problems with the circuit that supplies the solinoid on the steering rack on my 1998 BG5 Wagon..

The wiring loom that is connected to this solinoid got damaged rubbing off the driveshaft and its popped a fuse or the supply circuit..

I dont see any reference to the PAS fuse in ether of the fuseboxes...!!

Anybody know how this solinoid is fed..?

Thanks

Paul

I don't know the answer, but I'm curious about what you're talking about. I have an 04 WRX steering rack and it doesn't have any electrical connections - it's a purely hydraulic unit. Also have a 91 Legacy Turbo one, same deal. Does your model have "electronic vehicle-speed sensing variable power assist" like the SVX models in LSI trim?

Are you sure that the wires have no breaks in them, or are not currently shorting out in another location? Since the service manual we have on this site is for a USDM 98 Legacy, (which didn't have the electric variable power assist as an option), I would break out a multimeter or other tool to verify all of the fuses in the engine bay and the driver's side kick panel are indeed not blown. Can you pull the solenoid and test it with 12v away from the car?

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Hi Mike..

Thanks for your contribution to the problem I am having with my GTB power steering. I am assuming my car does have the electronic variable assist system fitted and I have already tested the solinoid on the steering rack with a separate 12v test... it works fine when voltage is applied. I had found the cable insulation damaged and I think this may have at some stage shorted out against the driveshaft..... and perhaps blowing something up the line-circuit. I cant locate any fuses that feed this and I wondering what controls the supply to this solinoid..?

The car is a limited edition JAP import GTB Wagon and I dont have any wiring diagrams for it...they were quite rare with JAP imports to Europe

Regards
