For posterity, this is what the uploader used:

Uploaded by Blaeven on Feb 14, 2011

This is the sound of the exhaust on my old subaru liberty/legacy.
It was a 97 model with an 05 outback ez30r motor in it.
The exhaust is fully custom:
Extractors
High flow cat
Twin inline resonators
2.5" piping
XForce MP02 rear muffler

I've been meaning to upload this for a while now... :P

This was the final incarnation of the exhaust I did for this car after trying many combinations, i found this gave the car the best combination of noise on throttle, quietness off throttle (and when cruising) and power.

Someone find him...get him signed up and figure out how he fitted it in.

More videos by this fella - I notice the car is RHD - and the reference to "Liberty" makes me think he's an Aussie.

My name's Tristan and i drive a gen2 GX...

it's only been slightly modified...

list of mods:

EZ30R Conversion
VIPEC ECU
Custom Extractors
2.5" catback
4.11 01 Liberty RX 5-speed (40:60 split)
4.11 01 Liberty RX rear diff
HD Clutch
Tein HA Coilovers
294mm Gen2 GT Brakes
17" B4 Multispoke wheels
Gen3 Legacy RSK front seats, drivers electric
Pioneer HU and speakers
Kenwood Sub (1500w)
Kicker AMP (480w)

she's currently making 143kw atw with a quiet muffler and a tame tune to pass emissions (so i can get it back on the road)

Scott at Insight Automotive has told me that with a freer flowing exhaust and a power tune it should make 150+kw atw

which is seriously hauling ass for a non-turbo... making even some of the STi boys worried now days...

That is it! I am now looking into building a full blown turbo kit for this thing along with building internals. Stay tuned for a long gathering process and build.

I was doing some more reading on Club Liberty - turns out camshafts.co.nz was quoting making cams for the EZ30R for around AU$2500, but Blaeven would lose the ALVCS system, but it's not clear if he did that. He does have launch control on the VIPEC ECU though, and he says that the engine is rev limited to 7000rpm. I wonder what it can spin up to, imagine 3L+ spinning like a Honda...

Porsche killer!

I just noticed in these pictures, this guy did not have to move the radiator into the metal radiator support like you did. Did he just put the engine in differently or something?

In the pictures hes using a EZ30R which is a 3.0 Liter. httrdd put the svx engine which is a 3.3 liter and thus longer.

Quick question for all the H6 guys. Why bother with the H6 when its limited to what you can do? If you do boost it, it will take some serious cash/hp.

httrdd
03-06-2011, 07:41 AM
The instant torque is what makes an H6 worth while. It is going to take some more money than an H4, but with about 100+ hp it takes you into the V8 muscle car competition. An H6 has about as much hp as a small V8. I also did it because I like to be different and challenge myself.

grayguy
03-06-2011, 01:04 PM
I'm Interested in the H6 for a few reasons;

A: impretty sure I can do it cheaper than building another turbo engine for my car (keeping in mind I do all my own fab and already own a Link ECU I can use
B: I think the power band will be WAY more fun than a low HP turbo motor, and I've gotten over high HP subarus, they aren't worth the money to me, I just want a fun DD
C: I'm sure the stock engine could handle a few pounds of boost (Super charger or turbo) and reach close to 300 crank HP safely with good tuning if I get tired of stock power.

Also, am I the only one that would rather have the Subaru rumble than this ELH whine? Unless it'll severly hurt power, I fully Intend to build an UEL header for my soon to start 3.3 swap.

Looking for pieces now.. Who makes off the shelf pistons and rods for this motor.. Someone school me.. Need specs.. Lower compression and all.. The outback stock motor is going and I was ready to drop an wrx or STi motor in it.. But this idea sounds cool

httrdd
03-06-2011, 01:48 PM
Eg33 parts or ez30 parts?

Greyguy- you will not really hear the rumble anymore, but the sound you will get you will not be disappointed! Think Porsche. ;)

grayguy
03-06-2011, 03:28 PM
Porsche is a disappointment. Like I said, as long as it won't Hurt power too much, I'll just build a borla type UEL

Also quick question about using a standalone with the H6. Would you use the engine wiring from the H6 and the interior wiring (gauges) from the original car? Sorry noob question, just trying to figure out standalone units.

httrdd
03-06-2011, 09:12 PM
Basically you could just put 2 harnesses under the dash if you wanted. It would be a pia and it prob would not fit underthedash. The standalone unit just basically controls the engine and everything to start or keep it running. The rest of the harness from the Legacy is still there and it still runs everything else interior and exterior.

Not his first H6 swap and he seems like he has access to a garage and the right tools. Mine took 6 months, but i took off about 3 months due to the intense heat from the summer. I worked with baic hand tools and really had no idea what I was doing though. Lol.

Both. Standalone units control the engine functions, all other normal vehicle functions such as ABS, HVAC, SRS etc go through the stock ECU. It depends on how wild you want to get with the modification - you can easily just use your existing dash and harness without using anything from the donor H6 car. Remember, it's just an engine. It needs basic items and some sensors to run. How that meshes with your car is up to you and your ECU.

Sorry for the thread jack  But wouldnt running both throw a cell since the original ECU wouldnt be getting any info form the engine?

No... perhaps I wasn't clear - the standalone becomes a passthrough for the stock ECU. There's more to it, but a good standalone will allow you to retain stock functions whilst tuning your car.

sorry for barging in, but what is the difference between a standalone and a piggyback then? I always thought a standalone replaced the ECU, and a piggyback went between the ECU and engine and modified the signals.

chuckthefuk
03-07-2011, 10:10 PM
To clarify a "piggy back" intercepts values that go to the stock ECU and changes then feeds them back into the stock ECU.

A standalone removes the entire stock ECU all together and uses either an adapter harness or is plug'n'play.

Huffer is trying to describe standalones that can not handle OEM ECU functions besides engine management.

Example 1: Running a standalone for engine **** thats in car #### with the stock automatic transmission from car ####. The standalone is used to run the **** engine and the stock ecu is used to handle the transmission, SRS, etc..

Example 2: A standalone like megasquirt by default is not able to retain stock ECU features. Megasquirt is "user" programmable ECU that can whatever you the user can program. So in this case you will run your stock ECU to handle all basic/safety functions and let megasquirt handle all motor functions.

Or he was just trying to say a better standalone like hyrdra, aem, etc.. will retain stock functions compared to megasquirt.

Or maybe I am wrong :smt011

Will the EZ30D and EZ30R sound the same if they had the same exhaust set ups? I know they have different head setups, along with the EZ30R has AVCS, not sure if that would change the sound though.

probably similar but not the identical. the header setup could never be the same, the ez30d has single port heads while the ez30r has tri port heads..

From what ive seen as far as dyno runs go the EZ30D with headers and exhaust make just as much power as the R models. Then if i get a good E85 tune on top of that i should be set :) ..... well till i want to add boost

Racerjon1 on rs25 talking about his EZ30D Swap in his impreza.

The other day I was sitting at an intersection at about 5:15pm - You know the time of day. You are trying to get out into traffic and the stream of officer workers, insurance agents and the general masses are all headed home to eat dinner and sit on their couch.. and that line of Volvos, Toyotas, Hondas and other boxy no-imagination cars are spaced *just* right so that as you sit there you can't help but think, "I am NEVER going to get out of here."

But wait. It might take some timing but you have a 42Autosports H6 swap under the Hood of your impreza and to the ants marching home you might look like another sedan, but you know better.

So I wait and I see a space. It's some woman on her i-phone and she has left a ten-car length gap in front of her.

I bring the revs up... 3.. 2.. 1.. GO! I let out the clutch and enter the intersection. As I turn right to slide in that gap left by the Soccer-mom, I feel a weird sensation. I never felt this in my RS on dry, clean pavement.

My tires are spinning and the back end is walking sideways ever-so-slightly.

When did I get a Camaro? When did I turn into a redneck? I am in an Impreza, the home of Computer geeks and rally afficienados. I am not supposed to be entering the intersection like Larry the Cable Guy.

Before I can fully adjust I have to hit the brakes to slow down to the 30mph in the 45-zone and not run into the car in front of me. I check the mirror - soccer mom is still back there yapping away, I am not sure she ever even noticed.

Hey, 42, get that 2.5 DSP engine finished before I get a ticket. I need a slow(er) car back.

Depends on what you know and how good you read diagrams. I could possible strip a harness in a couple of days (given that I have the time to do one) some can strip a harness in a couple of hours. Of coarse I am talking Eg33.

csweston

Hmmm anyone know who does these harness conversions or how much it could cost?

Huffer
04-11-2011, 03:08 PM
$600 if you supply the harnesses, maybe less if you supply the pinout diagrams for both vehicles.

ECS has a good page on their site explaining the process.

csweston
04-11-2011, 03:44 PM
Any one else do the merge? I was looking into ECS awhile ago when I was considering a wrx swap. Seems they've had their fair share of problems when it comes to wiring and some unhappy customers.

httrdd

Iwire or any of those companies do that. What kind of engine you going with and what years. I can find info for you and I know of some wiring gurus.

Huffer

Iwire did the wiring for ECS...and then Broken Motorsports in NJ I believe.

Most of the swap places only offer a 3month warranty on the electrical side, and 6 months on the engine.
