in the FSM it's called "WIPER DEICER"
front wiper deicer.

does it heat the black strip along the bottom of the windshield where the wipers rest?

this is for the front, i believe. the one for the rear is by the cruise control on the dash. my outback also has heated mirrors and as you can also see, heated seats. heated cloth seats, which are amazing.

look at the windshield to see if you have the element in it. if you have a factory windshield their will be 2 small orange dots underneath the wipers.

My 06 has this...I don't see the point honestly. The only reason it would be useful at all IMO is if the wipers froze to the windshield. Otherwise, you'll have to scrape the windshield anyway.

Or, just park in the garage, like I do.

it actually comes in handy when your wipers get all frozen up when you are driving and you can melt some of the snow and ice away.

As when the ice builds up on the wiper and you need to either stop, get out and beat the ice off (honestly, who does that ;) or (like most folks do) open the window at 60 MPH in the winter snow and catch the wiper mid stroke then whap it against the windshield to bust the ice loose.
THAT's what this is for... it helps melt or loosen the ice when the wiper's are in the down position, while you're driving and running the wipers.

But garages are nice too, if you have that sort of thing :smt023

what i was trying to get at is that if you are using the heated windshield with the wipers on intermittent you do not have to get out and stop so often. especially if you have the 1 piece all weather wipers, they do not get frozen up as easily. i do stop can whack my wipers on the windshield when they get all clogged up. i am a really cautious driver, even though i speed when the weather is good, when it is snowing or all icy out i do not drive more that 40 mph on the freeway and i try to stay off the freeway. i will drive down the freeway with my hazards on. i learned my lesson with driving fast on snow and ice covered roads even with studded tires, when i slid into a snow covered guard rail going about 55 mph in my moms Astro van. so i do not drive fast in the snow or ice. if it is all icy out i will just park the cars and stay home if i can.

When i had my 03 Forester XS it had this but I too also never saw the point because my wipers still would ice up..

IMHO beam wipers are better I never had any ice up at all hell this past winter I never lift the blades from the glass and all I did was clean my front window and that was it blades never got stuck trying to lift them up from the glass.

That's your windshield bacon dispenser. You're lucky, I don't have that. My wife's truck's AC vent controls have bacon and email icons.
You apparently have a front mounted bacon dispenser.
