I have a JDM EJ25 swapped into my car by PO. They used the USDM heads and intake manifold. The car is a early 97 so it is phase I. My question is, was the JDM EJ25 phase I or II or did they have both like us? Is there a way to tell phase I from II besides heads/intake manifold, or tearing the motor down?

The phase I block as a different thrust bearing than the phase II which means you cant used most EJ257 internals.

BTW I have done my reading, I have read just about every EJ25D build thread on the internet. I have goals of a DD/auto x car using the block I currently have. Weather that means EJ257 internals and boosted or EJ25D upgraded internals and bump compression up to 11.5:1 area. I completely understand you cant have reliability, performance and low cost, you only get 1 or 2 lol. I want all of them, and if I can do sti internals I might just get it haha.

Any competent machine shop would be able to modify your block to fit a phase II crank. But you CAN use STI pistons with a phase I crank, provided you either use your stock rods or go with aftermarket forged phase I ej25D rods. So I don't know what your JDM block is, but even some late EJ25D blocks were found to be phase II.

phase 1 blocks have 4 bellhousing bolts, phase 2 blocks have 8.

In late 97 or 98 they went to phase II in the ej25d. I was thinking about using the sti pistons and manley rods for the ej25d, just will cost more than I wanted it to.

The 4 1998 EJ25d's I've owned have been phase I. I believe it was 99, and then only some of them - were phase II.

My 98LGT had the phase II motor. Had the new style coil pack if I recall. I thought that was the way to tell if it was phase I or II. Maybe I am totally wrong though lol.

I have an 01 LGT with the EJ251 that I may swap shortblocks with so I have a better motor to build. Or maybe I should just quit being cheap and buy an sti shortblock lol
