I have a 2001 Legacy 2.5 GT Wagon 5MT.

I may have bad rings. For the price I'd pay to have the engine fixed, I might as well swap in a new motor with less miles. I don't have the time/money/tools to fix piston rings.

I'm sure other LGT motors 00-04 will work, and probably outback as well?

What other options do I have? Will newer Legacy/impreza motors work? NA, no turbo, looking for a direct swap with not hassles/mods needed.

you can rebuild the engine for cheaper than getting a new engine for. also you can mod it alittle for cheaper than buying a newer engine for.

i would rather have the satisfaction of a new engine over a used one any day. yes there are alot of good used engiens out there, but that just me.

If I have to spend over $2000 I'd rather put a down payment on a newer car. So that will be my budget haha.

Satisfaction is all well and good, but time/money are big factors here. I don't care about performance mods for my vehicle at this point. All I want is reliability and a decent driving experience. I have two motorcycles if I want a thrill, the car is my practical vehicle. I don't have the time/tools/desire to rebuild my motor myself, and paying a shop to do it will increase the price of rebuilding.

For around $1100 and under you can source a used Japanese motor with less then 70,000 km on it since that's the rule in Japan.

These motors are pretty much plug n play you just need to reuse your entire intake manifold and all the the little things like spark plug wires, throttle body, etc..

Its the FASTEST way to get your car running HOWEVER these engines are not perfect.. they do have rod knock occasionally and the health status depends on who owned the engine prior to export. Its hit or miss.. If you buy from a reputable importer they will give you at least 3 months warranty and free delivery depending on location.

Good luck
