HI everyone here is my Legacy project to date. I have had to replace all the vacuum lines and breather lines and all the water hoses and painted the fuel rails and recovered the wiring harness on the manifold. I rebuilt the turbo charger which was done with a kit from g-pop.com and fitted EBC slotted brake rotors and EBC green brake pads. They are a decent price and work well.
I made a short throw shifter by adding an extension to the shift lever as pictured and removing the pivot bucket by grinding away the weld and lowering it to give the actual shift rod clearence from the transmission tunnel in the car.It works very very well. the bushings were all gone when I got the car so we made new bushings at work out of Delron which is a very good plastic material.

I also removed the dash and resprayed it and the centre console as those pieces were bleached and badly sunfaded....I will give you guys the product name etc if you are interested as the color is a brown/grey color and the paint matched very well.
I have done nothing to the underside of the car yet, other than replace the rotted out muffler. I am currently in Las vegas and going to get a new windshield fitted as it arrived with a big crack in it which was not mentioned when I bought it eight weeks ago. I am also hoping to fit a late model impreza steering wheel so I will let you know if it turns out it can be fitted.

If you like this project you might also like to take a look at my Impreza project.

as I have mentioned in my introduction, I started out working on the legacy During my apprenticeship in New Zealand and I was involved in racing and rallying the legacys during my apprenticeship. I was also fortunate enough to work with Possum Bourne for several races as he co drove in the touring car races with Trevor Crowe who I was working for at the dealership.
I was actually doing pre delivery checks these legacys like the one I just purchased when they were brand new so it is nice to be reunited with them after all these years. Here are a few pictures of my time with the Legacys...

The Legacy pictured directly above on the jack is the car I spent a huge amount of time working on as a race and then used as a rally car. We ran the car at all the major touring car events and then later ran it in the Rothmans rally of New Zealand in 1991

Today has been a great day, I have purchased a Factory WRC engine. I am fortunate enough to be in the racing industry and it is known that I am a big Subaru fan so I was contacted and asked if I would be interested in this engine....I will for sure be fitting it into a Subaru Legacy and not one of my impreza's. I am very very excited about the future legacy project for this engine

Amazing, you worked with Possum?!? This is awesome! I remember well the day he passed, as well as many of the local rallies he was king of.

Good stuff!

Where are you located, and can I have a job?!?

What a beautiful example of an early 1st Gen Legacy!!! :smt023

I can't believe the condition of the shell, not a spec of rust ...... absolutely stunning. This is the car I have dreamed of owning since I was a kid. Great work, great color and an amazing build.

Thanks for the complements guys, it still actually needs a lot of work, I have not touched anything in the driveline other than replacing the brake rotors, however It does look so much better than when I got it. I still need to have the bumper covers painted, the rear bumper cover is a good used one off another car so it is not the same color as the rest of the car. It is in much better condition now though and I like to drive it. I fitted a momo steering wheel and the sony stereo is a great addition  Here are a few more pictures from the final day of getting it back together......

I'm curious if you could share with us the specs of the WRC engine, and what kinds of parts it used, if anything is modified from a particular "off the shelf" set of heads or block, etc. Loving your thread, thanks for sharing.

It will be later this year by the time I actually recieve the wrc engine and spare set of cyl heads as well. It does not have any intake or exhaust manifolds . I will for sure post some good pictures and more info regarding the engine when I get it. I am thinking that the engine really needs to go into a Legacy rs ra in street trim with the ra manifolds etc. I just need to find one. I was unable to purchase the Legacy ra I was working on trying to buy, they did not accept my offer. I hope something suitable will come up soon. Unfortunately the legacy rs ra had hydraulic lifter problems from what I have been told and a lot of people apparantly converted them with later ra engines. I have found several like this on the internet with later ra wrx engines in them. I think that this factory wrc engine would be great in a legacy ra, because the car is so rare and that would make it an extremely unique vehicle. What do you guys think about the Idea?

You are my hero. Very clean disassembling are installing. This is how I will redo my 90 when I have the room. Full tear down of the whole car and repaint from everything, I am aware you didnt do everything but it you were still very meticulous and everthing was well thought out. I love taking things apart and cleaning them before I reinstall them. what did you do to the outside trim along the windows? did you sand them down and then repaint, couldnt tell. Was this just a rare find on a very well maintained car? also the guys on legacy central would love to see what you did. alot of these guys here are on that one as well and vise versa, i have the same name on both.

well everyone. I went away to Indy to work on tomas Sheckters car for the 500 and we finished eighth and I was looking forward to comming back and fitting the newly painted bumpers to the legacy, however I got back and the whole car was stripped and in primer :) My dad and the painter had decided to paint the whole car for me which I am excited about but now the whole project has changed agian. we are removing the sunroof and fitting a new roof panel and I am planning on fitting possum bourne group A roof vents in place. The wrc engine will be going into this legacy now that all this effort is going into it so it is completely stripped again. I only had it on the road for just over three weeks and now it is apart again....I hope you will like where this project is going, some days I don't event know where it's going.....definately looking forward to having Luke paint the whole car, it looked great in pictures but had a lot of little door dings etc, they will be gone soon.
I will post pictures soon

Thanks, the project has taken some turns along the way, I never thought I would have it completely stripped out again just having got it back on the road. I am looking forward to getting the roof vents fitted to replace the sunroof, I think it will look great and be functional as well. I really like how the dash turned out with the decals and I am fitting a boost gauge as well as oil temp and pressure gauges which will be mounted on the passenger side between the vents.
I have had to take on a lot of extra work to fund this project, I just finished a brake job on 08 Z06 and will be fitting exhaust to it next week. I also did tune up on 99 vette and I am fixing a Ferrari 328 that was worked on by the local Ferrari workshop, the guy does horrible work but is the only one in town, I have had to repair a 348 that he worked on also. I would like to get some STI's to work on that would be great also.
I hope to get the vents in next week and have the roof panel fitted so I will keep you all posted and up to date on the project. Above is a photo taken in the back of our shop where I have been working on peoples cars and the Ferrari

The Possum Bourne roof vents are nearly finished and we will start fitting the roof panel when they arrive, I am also working on another big plan for the car but I don't want to announce it until or if it happens!
This project has only just begun everyone so please keep an eye on this thread

Ok everyone, I guess it's time for an update. I picked up the Subaru engine that was sent here to an engine builder directly from STI for development and was supposed to be a WRC engine, well it turned out to be alittle disappointing in that respect. It has hand ported cyl heads and four cam rocker set up. It looks to be a EJ20 G engine and cyl heads the same as the Legacy RSRA. It has the early closed deck block also which from my research looks to be a great block. It has new crank and rods as well as brand new spare set of cyl heads. The truth be told I swapped it for some Cosworth DFX pump parts as it was basically sent over by STI and nothing was done with it so it sat for years under a bench. The guy that swapped for parts has been dealing with us for years so don't think he was trying to missrepresent the engine he never even pulled it apart. It just is not wrc engine but it does look to be the engine that came in the RSRA Legacy which is great in that respect because it's going into a legacy

The engine internals are new but it did have signs of a previous problem, which woud have destroyed previous crank. You outcan see where it took out the trusts and moved forward and hit the case. Definitely not with the crank that is in it now it is new as well as forged pistons. It does not look like it has ever been bolted into car so we are guessing it has done short run on dyno. Amazingly number 3 piston was in backwards.

hey i was just going to pop in and say this thread is awesome. deffinately doing an amazing job. i real like it. i would love to do something like this but my budget doesnt allow for it.

however i work at a engine shop and we do a lot of performance subaru stuff and i would recomend some different heads. those are the EJ20G rocker HLA and IMHO they are junk. i would HIGHLY recommend the EJ20k, EJ25D (non-HLA) , even the EJ20G shim over bucket.

Here are a few more of the block. We are going to have to go oversize as there was damage to. The #3 cyl bore which is too deep for me to hone out. I appreciate the opinions and comments, I am now aware of the issues regarding the cyl heads and after a lot of discussions and questioning people I have decided to carry on and use these heads. This is mainly because they are factory hand ported heads (the engine also came with RSRA internals as well). I talked to Trevor Crowe who ran these heads on the Legacy rally car and his opinion was they actually were a pretty decent head that flowed quite well and produced good low end torque but also added if I were doing a full engine build and high rev engine It would be better to use later 97/98 STI Heads. I worked his rally car in New Zealand and he had converted his heads to solid lifters with the same set up that prodrive was using on their group A Legacys. My plan is to do the same conversion.I also talked to the person who built the engines for the legacy and he felt the heads were quite good also and although the solid lifter set up was difficult to adjust he thought the early prodrive Legacy engines were good and my plans are to do similar set up. If these were not hand ported RSRA heads direct from the factory I would go with the later heads. I have a brand new still in factory wrappers spare set as well. I will keep posting engine pictures as I go !

awesome build, keep up the good work! I'd love to get one of the legacy SS some day and restore it.

What did you use to get the block and intake manifold so clean originally while the block was still in the car?

well cool car, i really am interested in your build, ill be lurking for sure. however im going to throw out some info. the idea of a forum is to share information. and i would like to discuss this, im not trying to argue.
so here goes. based on the flow numbers i have seen, those heads (ported or not) are some of the poorest flowing DOHC heads i have seen subaru build. they were good, back in the day when they were new. concider taking them to a shop that has a flow bench, compair to any JDM EJ20 engine. or EJ25 for that matter. i reccomended the 97-98 STi heads (EJ20K) because they are a better performing head. they have a more aggressive cam profile, and are designed to rev to 8700 fuel cut. not only that they flow slightly better at low lift and much better at high lift. and with some gasket matching, knife edging they would really be a great head. however they still dont flow really good.. better than the EJ20G, but still not as good as say a EJ207. if you deshroude the EJ25D heads they flow like you wouldnt believe. really very good. we have had people changing the tune on there cars because it flowed so much better that the head was causing them to lean out. not to mention they have a clover shaped combustion chamber that gives it a nice quentch area, meaning, better burn. better burn = more power per cc of air and fuel.
now im not really familiar with trevor crowe. but if those are good flowing heads then he needs to buy a flow bench and test some other heads. the legacy 2.2 turbo, and the EJ20G are good motors and all but a EJ257 will still wipe the floor with them. both in terms of low end and top end. i dont know if you have herd of mitch's 807WHP Ej257, but the guy who does our flow testing is the guy who did the porting, polishing, machining, flow benching, etc. on that motor.
i guess im just confused on what the intent is for this engine..
its not a exact replica engine, and its not the optimal power house. if you can, please flow test them. im really interested to see a flow bench chart on the ported heads. because the non ported heads are... well pitiful.

also, what pistons are you going to run? correct me if im wrong but if you use those heads which have a combustion chamber of like 57ccs with the stock EJ22 piston dish wont that drop your compression to the mid to low 7 to 1 ratio?

what is your turbo, boost, injector and engine managment blue print for this?

anyways, cool build. i really like it. sorry if i sound like an asshole. its not intended.
peace bro.

I guess I should start by saying Trevor recommended the later 97/98 STI heads after I told him what I was doing with the engine. His experience with those early heads with the rocker set up was going back to the early 90s when he was racing the car in the touring car series so it is important that you don't think he is giving bad info here. He is a very successful man in racing and rallying in N.Z. He ran the later heads after I stopped working for him. Using these heads is really about one thing only, they are factory hand ported cyl heads, came direct from STI with them on the engine. I plan to build a car as close as possible to the original RSRA Legacy and therefore my aim is to do as much as I can with these heads even though I am aware for the type of build I am doing it would be better with the later heads which Trevor did say. I Would like to run all the factory manifolds and water to air intercooler with bigger fuel pump and injectors and still have not contacted the guys down in N.Z but still need to find out about cams from guys who were supplying them back in the day.
I have the challenge of making the best of what was originally available with a few of the new parts available also. Long story short, it's somewhat of a nostalgic build. I did not find any of you comments offensive though and quite happy to receive info from someone like yourself who I can see knows what they are up to just by the questions asked. I just don't want you to think that these were the heads recommended heads. As you and Trevor and John all have clearly statedThe Later STI cam over bucket set up was the way to go.

Here is the layout that I plan to use. The water to air intercooler as seen above withintake etc basically factory pieces!
I had not bought pistons or calculated compression or even cc cyl heads yet. I will be working on the heads tomorrow so I guess I should post a few pictures of that process! I plan on having Mitch Pederson do the tuning for me and one of the few things that will not be factory is the ECU. At the end of the day it's also going into a 1991 Subaru Legacy. Nothing like my Impreza 22B or my 05 STI as far as handling is concerned

The Subaru Legacy Rally Car

The Legacy made its debut in 1989, it was what was going to be used for Subarus world rally programme. After announcing the programme in September 1989 Prodrive received its homoligation papers for the 290 bhp Subaru Legacy, complete with prodrives own 6 speed transmission. Subaru entered its first Prodrive developed car, the Group A Subaru Legacy RS in the 1990 season, piloted by Finnish driver Markku Alén, Alen remained with the team through the 1991 season. His successes included 4th place in the 1990 Rally Finland, also known as the 1000 Lakes Rally, and in 1991, a 3rd and two 4th places. For the 1992 season, Subaru only entered seven of the fourteen WRC events, preferring to demonstrate the car's ability on gravel rallies. The drivers for 1992 were Finn Ari Vatanen with co-driver Bruno Berglund and Scotsman Colin McRae with co-driver Derek Ringer. Both drivers were able to achieve second place finishes.
1993
For the1993 World Rally Championship season the Subaru team debuted its distinctive blue and yellow color scheme, along with a new title sponsor, 555. Ari Vatanen and Colin McRae were still
the primary drivers, with the season being McRae's first complete year of World Rally
Championship competition. Markku Alén, returned part-time to the team after a brief stint at
Toyota in 1992, and took 4th for Subaru in Portugal. McRae took the first win for Subaru, at the
eighth event of the season, Rally New Zealand, the last outing for the Group A Subaru Legacy
rally cars Possum Bourne was also selected to drive the Prodrive legacy at several events
including the rally of New Zealand. At the next event, Rally Finland, Subaru debuted their new
Prodrive developed Group A Impreza rally car.

He was a three time winner of the Asia-Pacific Rally Championship and the Australian Rally Championship seven times consecutively, amongst many other titles.

Possum Bourne’s Cars
Bourne was best known for his exploits behind the wheel of Subaru cars, initially the RX (the turbocharged version of the Leone), then the Legacy (rebadged as the Liberty for the Australian market because of a perceived clash with charity organisation in Australia
But it would be the WRX that he would become most associated with, driving for the Prodrive Subaru World Rally Team in Rally New Zealand, Australia and also He was partnered by Kenneth Erikssonn in the mid 1990s, and went on to win multiple Australian titles with his own team. Possum Bourne Motorsports
Subaru Japan even awarded him a black limited edition STi version of the Impreza for personal use.

I began my career working for Trevor Crowe Subaru in 1989 and became very involved with his Motorsport programme which gave me the opportunity to work with Possum Bourne and to Race and Rally prep a Subaru Legacy for Trevor Crowe. I was also involved in servicing and Pre Delivery checks of new Subaru’s at the Dealership as well as attending Night school until the end of 92 complete my Automotive Engineering apprenticeship. I completed my time May 1993.I have been Involved in racing in the U.S.A since that time, I currently own two Impreza STI’s one is a super rare 22B, I never lost my Interest in Subaru and still remember the fun times working on the Legacy rally car.

Well we cc calculated the cyl head and Piston/block and calculated in for head gasket and the engine cc is 1993.04 at current specs and will be. 2015 cc with 1/2 mm oversize pistons. Current compression ratio is 8.36 to1 and it will be 8.44 to 1 with 1/2 mm oversize
The pistons will be the ones with the valve pockets (reliefs) machined in them same spec as RSRA pistons that came out.

awesome build, keep up the good work! I'd love to get one of the legacy SS some day and restore it.

What did you use to get the block and intake manifold so clean originally while the block was still in the car?

Ben
Hey Ben, I cleaned it by hand with a CRC product that was old stock at an auto parts store next to our shop. Unfortunately it is not available any more. I will get you the name of another product I have discovered works just as well. I had to do it all by hand with soft bristle brush similar to a tooth brush because the inlet ports were open. It took much more time to do than I care to admit. I will get you the product name that I am using now, it also works very well.

I am considering rebuilding the 2.2 engine after I remove it from the Legacy and then try and sell it as a complete unit with the rebuilt turbo and everything. As you know I replaced all the hoses and vaccum lines including the steel water lines. Is there anyone here that would be interested in a completely rebuilt engine with all new parts?

Actually I guess thats a good question, I would like everyone to see the project, it's going to be a massive project but I hope to keep it interesting and also like to let people know about the parts I find and use along the way like these crossmembers I plan on using are simply perfect for the project. I plan on fitting Impreza Ra six speed and diffs driveshafts and lots of other changes planned but I also hope to keep the factory look in the engine bay but with the Legacy rsra intercooler etc. I will let everyone know what it takes and what I use as I go......unfortunately my budget is starting to get stretched so it could even take a couple of years to complete

I am also going to be taking my Legacy to get the subframes made and fitted soon so I am very much looking forward to that and having Ray do some seam welding on the shell at the same time.
I also had a great Christmas and got a scale model of a Ferrari 512LM that I worked in the 90's while working for my dads business.

I may have missed it but what exactly do you do? You say you work on these, but didn't say what you do exactly. Just curious.

I currently work for my Dads business rebuilding racing engines, he specialises in Cosworth Engines and generally the DFV which is the F1 engine, he does a lot of Ferrari and Alfa engines as well so I help him with the rebuilding of these engines. Basically stripping down cleaning NDT testing (crack checking parts) measuring and rebuilding and setting up cyl heads. I don't do any of the machine work, thats generally what my dad does. I also ran a shop working for a guy with a large car collection and restored cars for him including a ford GT40 and a 86 MARCH Indycar and a Lola T70
Then I moved out to Indiana and worked in The Champcar series as a Mechanic from 99 to the end of 2007.
I started out my carrer as a apprentice in NZ working at a Subaru dealership and my Boss was a very well known race car driver so I worked on his Legacy race and rally car.

One of the cars was obviously a very nice car before it was crashed but the trunk and rear garnish were in excellent condition which I want for the spoiler delete, I will have one painted with original spoiler and this one without. I also picked up a good carpet, rear parcel tray with speaker covers and cutout for rear brake light. The big thrill was finding wind up windows with arm rests
etc in excellent condition

I also picked up spare dash pad with no sunburn :) which I will have to respray to correct color and a bunch of the trim clips and fasteners etc which I labeled and sealed in bags.

Hi, my sincere apologies to those that are watching this build thread, I know I have neglected to keep it going as I should.
I have had a few things going with the project, firstly the parts in New Zealand are all packed up and ready for shipping, I am just working to get the paperwork done for customs. Secondly I bought a rotisserie and the car has been seam welded and Ray from DRC race craft has given me an awesome new front crossmember to fit to the car..... So here are some pictures

Hi
Great thread. I too am a Kiwi. Have a 1990 RSR original rally car. Had it in PBMS last year and had one of their engines installed. Roof vents etc. Trying to keep it original etc.
Another car I have is a 1993 RS for gravel rallying. Good fun.

www.groundsky.co.nz (http://www.groundsky.co.nz) Car 519 for some current photos of the RSR.

Those subframes look very cool.

Keep us informed about parts etc. PBMS can get most things but RSRA intercoolers and things I have not come across.

Yes Reuben is correct, I have spent well over a year dealing with them (strong for Subaru) and gathering up parts for this project thanks to the guys from DirtyolBC forum in NZ that suggested it. I am in the middle of dealing with the customs issues and then this big box of parts will be on their way :)

I had a look at their website. Got some good bits. Will keep it in mind. My tarmac ar will likely go back to PBMS early next year before I do Targa events in Rotorua and the long event later in the year so will sort out any extra bits to be done then.

Sounds like fun! PBMS are a good bunch of blokes. Had murray build my engine 5, almost 6 years ago, and it's still going strong with 50,000 k's on the clock!

Do please go join up over at DOBC.co.nz, sounds like you'd fit right in over there.

I spent the evening on the mill making a frame to protect my cooler that's mounted in front of the radiator, it cools the water in the intercooler, and it's vulnerable to damage and very expensive so it's worth the effort to make this frame to mount a meshscreen to protect it.

Funny, Reuben is a good man :) probably suffers with the same thing I do, nothing is ever good enough or clean enough and a small imperfection can be agonizing :)
Anyway much to my frustration my wife drove the STI daily after this project for almost 30,000 miles it now has close to 60,000 but it still is in very good condition for the miles, I just wished we got her the Forester sooner as the use did mess it up a little!

You what is really funny? My dad and I both have Volvo Amazons and when he got his car back in... 1994?... All it needed was a motor. Mine ran and drive, but looked like hell. He didnt have it on the road until about a year and a half ago! He had been taking every little part off and repainting, polishing, and rebuilding it. My car has been under the knife since 99 but I'm doing custom body work and it also has a Nissan motor.

I will say though, you can eat of the motor and the rest of his engine bay in his 67 Volvo! Polished twin carbs do look pretty damn cool, but I like to drive my cars! haha.. So I do understand people that go that extra mile with cleaning. I strip the interior in my BD a couple times a year for detailing and I have a pretty clean motor bay, but not even close to as clean as yours. The only one I have that clean is my Volvo and thats because I havent driven it for 13 years! haha

....nothing is ever good enough or clean enough and a small imperfection can be agonizing :)

Same here! I'm pretty sure the gray hairs on my head have been expedited due to my Wagon project. Everywhere I look I clean...just yesterday I was inside the front inner fender well...leaves, spider webs, dirt, dust and I let it be for now. Didnt sleep well last night as a result. :P

OCD makes things easier. There is no question about it. All projects that are done with precision go back together muuuch easier.

Project update......
One part of the project with this Legacy has been to rebuild all the parts that will not be going back on the car and sell them, It has added a significant amount of work to the project, however I hope that it will keep one or more Legacys out there running.
I am currently rebuilding the original 2.2 SOHC engine, last weekend I crack checked the crank, Cams, rods , pistons and pins and assembled block and measured bearing clearences
I also stripped and cleaned the heads and faced the valves and cut the seats, I think I will do a little clean up inlet and exhaust port work as the casting are very rough!

Today was a busy day, I modified a hood scoop to let more air into the engine bay and I plan on cutting luveurs into the panel on the inside of the hood to help lower temp of engine bay/intercooler. I also spent some time blending the ports on the original 2.2 cyl heads, they are very rough castings. Finally I stripped and inspected my original transmission, It looks in great shape so I will replace the seals and put it back together

What turbo do you plan to run on this Legacy? the WRC GRP A used the IHI VF15 turbo, they only made a handful of them and was only available through Prodrive for 10,000 pounds, but it would be perfect for your build, Aaaawesome job!

I have had a few people ask me about removing the trim so I will post a few photos that will show what holds the trim in place, once the rubber door seals are removed and the screws removed from the channel that retains the door seals, then the trim can be removed from the clips. There is a nut on the rear corner window trim that needs to be removed from the inside of the car, so the inside trim piece needs to be removed to get to it, I have taken a photo of that so it will make sence

Now for a project update, I have fit most of the trim on the car, I am missing the trim on the left front door(center moulding) and both rear doors I need the trim that runs against the glass. I have most of the fuel system in except for needing a few clamps to finish the job. I have all the window regulators in and all the glass and door seals installed as well as the locking Mechanisims. I fit the window wiper mechanism back in place and all the lock mechanisim back in place in the trunk.
Here's the photos

Simply awesome! Unreal! This is the first car I ever purchased. It was back in 1999 while she had almost 270 000 KM. This is where I discovered Subaru. Thanks for my ex mother in-law for the sweet 1000$ deal!

Thanks, I know those heads are not the best and certainly will not make the power I could from a later version cam over bucket Impreza heads from an STI, however these heads are period correct, they should give me the original sound I remember with unequal length headers, I think the overall Idea of the project is to pay tribute to the good old Legacy and I hope when people see and hear this car as it was back in the day it they will appreciate it. It certainly is not the easy way to go with this old RA engine, so I appreciate what you are saying about the heads not being the best choice.

No competition has been poor, we were fast at the first event in Sebring and much quicker than all the cars even the ones from Europe except for the Audis which has a budget multiple times larger than ours, then We had good races against rebellion in Long Beach and Laguna Seca which we won but hard fought wins, then Rebellion decided not to return, the Dyson car has been unreliable and their drivers and on track performance have not been good, although their car has had significant speed over us in strait line they have not been able to pull together for a race. We have ran more laps this year than ever before, ran faster than we did last year sometimes several seconds faster and never missed a session or even part of one that we intended to run and never had any mechanical failures.

Hi everyone, well I finally have an update, I have the front Sub frame painted and fitted to the car. I have to get a steering rack from a 05-07 Impreza STI and also need to modify a intermediate steering shaft to fit between the column and the rack as I have been told these are different spline on the Legacy Column compared to the Impreza. The front Bar set up is great, there are four positions on the ARB Arms to Adjust the bar from a soft to firm position (the Softest setting being the hole furthest away from the bar at the end of the arm which is where there is the most leverage action on the bar) also the splined bar itself can be easily changed.
Here are a few photos of the Subframe in place

The second part of this project is nearly finished. I have slowly been going through all the original parts and rebuilding them. I hope that someone will be interested in buying them to rebuild another Legacy back to it's former glory. Here is what I had in mind, I have to paint the diff housing which has rusted a lot just sitting around and go through the steering rack and fit bushings to lateral links and trailing arms and then this project is finished !

I had to get the Legacy off of the Rotissorie today because I sold it. I will use the money towards the WRC stands which I just purchased. I decided to fit the bumpers to the car just to take a look at it also it keeps them under cover and safe. The front bumper cover is the USDM one and will not be the one I will fit to the car, It will have the JDM cover!

There are a few things that I consider very important to this project, The Front and rear Sub Frames which are hand made and done by a true craftsman and fabricator, his welding is a work of art.
The Engine is also very important to me, and having the original hand ported cyl heads on an engine that was shipped direct from STI, well that is fantastic and a great part of this project also.
The wind up manual windows are also another great find and part of this project, having those and the correct engine to make it like the genuine Legacy RA is priceless. There are a couple of other items that I thought was significant when it comes to the RA Legacy, and Gerald at Strongs was able to find me a genuine rear garnish and the genuine Type RA decal attached as shown in this photo. It may have cost me a lot of money however it was well worth it.

Then one of the members on here helped my significantly by finding this new badge for my intercooler as found on the RA Legacy, so a very special thanks to him. It is a very special find as they are no longer available, I have purchased the last turbo hood here in the USA as well as many other items that were the Last available and it makes it really awesome to know that many of the new parts used to build this car can't be found now.

A Diversion from the thread here but I wanted to mention this, as some of you know the Legacy project slowed down this year as I was Traveling a lot to work in the ALMS on a P1 car. After the season end we won eight out of ten races and one Fourth place and A DNF in the season final at Petit Lemans in Atlanta Georgia. We won the Drivers and manufacturers Championship and I finally attended the Championship Banquet as part of the Series champion crew.
I was lucky to have my Wife and boys there with me for the last race having spent so much time away traveling to races this year. It was also a special occasion to have my wife there with me on the grid holding the flag before the race.

Our race car was also parked outside the Banquet hall on the big night so it was a special event.

I know it has been a while since I have posted anything regarding my build and it's because I have been very busy with the race and test schedule this year and also got into fitting a supercharger to an 03 Corvette and the kit was a disaster so I have had very little time to work on the Legacy.
I did have time to fit a Walbro 255 LPH in tank fuel pump, I did not follow the instructions as I did not like the way they wanted to mount the pump, I modified the base mount which was rubber and I was able to fit it just as the factory had with the original.
This pump will easily support the 350 hp that I hope to make from this engine

I was faced with a decision regarding what to do with the nuts and bolts and all the original steel parts on the Legacy, I had bought a lot of new bolts for the struts and suspension and backing plates and they were all zinc plated (silver) and all the original were the green color which I was not able to confirm what process it was so I went with the silver, and actually two different processes depending on where the parts were being used. I also processed a lot of the hardware in gold As it wasoriginally.

Today I assembled the rear parking brakes to the STI Knuckles and started working on the steering rack fitment to the sub frame. I also have the wiper motor installded which is a new unit but obselete part from dealership. I was fortunate to find this on EBay with just one small scratch on it but otherwise in perfect condition

I have had a lot going with the Legacy project The Ohlins coil over struts have arrived and I have been searching for a top strut mount to use as these are for an 05 STI and I knew I would need to find a good alternative and I think that I will be using Cusco adjustable camber top Mounts. The big surprise was the Clevis had changed between 04 and 05 STI with the change from 5x100 to 5x114 in USDM Impreza's. So I am going to make inserts and re drill the Clevis on the Struts.
I also finally got the Intercooler pump together, I was waiting for the metric O rings and the plated parts made this 20 year old pump look like new, which is great as these are really expensive. Unfortunately it looks like I am missing a bracket to mount the pump.
I also pressed apart the Steering Knuckle as I need to fit the Legacy steering colum joint to the STI assembly which I bought new with the rack. I will post pictures of that soon.

I have contacted Subaru drive magazine and Subaru of America to let them know about the project but I never heard back. Actually Don Nichols that owned the shadow F1 Team comes by the shop once in a while and it was him who said I really need to let them know what I am doing.
You are we welcome to visit, just PM me so I can let you know if I'll be in town, I'm often off racing or testing .

Hopefully you will be able to get it published, this is too awesome of a project for people not to see it. Today I spent the day at the lockal Auto dismantlers and I pulled a whole lot of clips and plugs in excellent condition and some exterior trim pieces which were in good condition but the best part of the day was finding a complete Non ABS brake line set up which was in perfect condition, I basically wiped it off and fit it in my car and it looks awesome. This part is dealer obselete so I was concerned about the likelihood of finding one so it was a great day today with my project :-)
I also found a head liner which I will have to modify for the roof vents, it looks like it will be another tricky project, but I will get on to that soon and then I will have it re upholstered to be a material like my 05 STI, I dont like the vinyl, it looks cheap.

The rear and front top mounts are camber adjustable although the rears have very little movement because of the size of the hole in shell, I may be able to move the position of the screws that hold the adjuster in the plate if needed. I will look at the camber once I have a rear subframe and lateral linksThe front ones have much more
adjustment.

This week has been a difficult one with the withdrawal of the Muscle Milk Picket racing from the Tudor series I am no Longer working for the team. I think given the chance we would have ran at the front again and challenged for wins. It was a great opportunity for me and winning the last ALMS championship before the merger of the two series was awesome. I am very disappointed that it ended like this and I hope that another opportunity like this will come soon. I will use this time to get more done on the Subaru, unfortunately The extra work from racing provided the much needed finances for this project :-(

Today I fit the JDM front bumper cover as I am having a person from Subaru of America come and take photos with the possibility of doing a article on the project, unfortunately I do not have the correct bumper support etc for it but I want it to look as it will when it's finished. I have also finished almost all the trim on the car, the front cowl and rear wheel arch trim pieces are on and the trim above the front and rear windscreens are in place. The window washer bottle and hoses are in and I have a lot more parts comming from Subaru soon to finish a lot of the small detail pieces

Thanks, I was disappointed with the way the season had gone in the first two races and I found it really frustrating that the DTP were faster than a p2 car, when it is obvious the P2 car is a superior car but the DTP's were given more power and aero and we were not able to show what we can do in just two races with the new car. I will spend all the extra time working on the Legacy, It has been good to get some time on it again!

Today I received some parts from FedEx that I was very happy about, these are parts I had custom made by my friends at Aerodine Composites and they give the original set up a much more finished look. I am very happy with the result

This weekend I was busy on the Legacy, I have painted the Trans Mount and the Diff and made a rear Strut brace out of a 2005 STI Impreza Brace.

Hi, I know it's been a while since I updated the thread, I have been busy working on the transmission and I ended up stripping the case off of it after I had an issue with not being able to get the transmission strainer back into place after I removed it.
It is now back together and the case has been cleaned and the bolts and brackets have been re plated gold zinc.
I also had an original strut tower brace shipped over from New Zealand and I have just finished that project, I re painted the mounts and polished the bar and plated the bloats and adjuster. I also fit a Perrin short throw shifter adaptor and we made new shift linkage bushings at the shop. I have also been working on the factory fuel rails which I will have to use because we live in California and I will have to get it checked for emissions etc so I did a lot of work to help them flow more fuel.

Hi guys, unfortunately as some of you know I have had to completely stop on my project with the Legacy as I have run out of money to support it and I was unable to sell any of the parts I rebuilt that were out of the Legacy that I was not going to use Again in the car.
I have started a build on a Shadow DN5 Formula one car and I have the intentions of conting with the Legacy after it's done.
Here are a few photos of the project so far

Well I know it's been a while since I posted and it's because I have been very busy building a new shop for all the projects I have. It got to the point where I needed to have a building to continue work on the race cars and I was fortunate to get financial support from the owner of the cars to be able to do so. It took several weeks and a heap of work and I was able to transform the building into my new workshop
