View Full Version : Transmission wont engage. Plz help

I just finished an engine swap that took a 98 legacy from a 2.5 down to a 2.2 motor. The old engine was shot, but the vehicle still drove. Now.. the new engine runs great, while the car wont go into gear.

The check engine light came on when i let it run this morning.

I checked the fluid levels, and i found out that the automatic transaxle fluid went all the way up and down the stick even after wiping it off and checking again (engine was cold). I know its supposed to be checked after its heated up, but there is far too much. I have not got to draining some of the fluid yet. Would this possible be the problem?

Any ideas? Thanks in advance guys!!

I don't know if it's the same with BE/BH but I had the same problem on my auto outback.. But the tail/brake light fuse blew and it wouldn't let me shift out of park

Hmmmm. The car lets me take it out of park, its just unresponsive as when i do.

Torque converter???? Did you put everything back the way it should be..

I did not cut any corners and everything fit together. I had the converter out and it went right back into place. There was a plastic ring near the end that goes into the transmission, that was actually broken, but i put it back on as it was only broke in the one place. (I hope i didnt mess up there)

I pulled the cover thats used to get at the converter bolts, and it is spinning. idk

Is it possible that a converter can be intakes backwards???Or it only goes in one way

It went in as it came out. There were two notches at the one end that lined up inside the transmission.

I have heard that if the torque converter is improperly seated, the engine and transmission wont fully set together, but where people screw up is when they use the engine/transmission bolts to draw the two together, and in so doing, pushing the shaft that comes of the back of the converter, into the front pump (inside the transmission) and ruining it.

(this is what im thinking happened)

Made that mistake long time ago but in a manual trans... It warp the clutch disc and it won't disengage when the clutch pedal was pushed in

mine is having a similar problem. It will start going in first gear just fine, but won't shift into second, the engine just revs up and down and then it goes back into first....could this be the same thing?

There is a shaft that runs into the torque convertor from the transmission pump and is connected to the outer shell of the torque convertor. There is no other mechanical connection between the engine and the transmission. My guess is that when the tc was out, it wasn't correctly reinstalled, and the trans pump isn't spinning now. No pump, no trans oil pressure, no movement.
