I have BH and I am putting in a wrx momo wheel. Its gone great until we got to the aibag. The two prong airbag wire thing doesnt line up with the legacy. Anyone get past this?

Huffer
03-22-2011, 04:15 PM
Yep, you got the wrong wheel/airbag combo...

You can try to splice plugs (personally I would warn against this) or you can see if the SRS charge will swap from your stock wheel to the MOMO one.

httrdd
03-22-2011, 04:31 PM
I do not think the SRS will swap out. You are going to have to find on with the 3 prong and sell that one. I would also say no to splicing.

hm... :(
Will the JDM Legacy one fit on without modifications?

MRLancaster

What if I found someone who's good at splicing. I wouldnt mind paying that instead of a new wheel. I wouldnt dare try splicing it myself.

Here is a discussion about them and splicing although this one was about a 97 fitment.

Oh and just take out your airbag from the Leggy and try and fit it in the Momo. If it works you are good.

I was wondering about that.....If i just put the legacy into the momo....but wasnt sure if that was possible. Didnt know if once you took out the airbag, then it wouldnt be able to be used or not.

httrdd
03-23-2011, 05:20 AM
Yea the airbag will come out in onepiece and will not be ruined. The screws are safety torques on the side of the wheel that hold it in.

MRLancaster
03-23-2011, 08:48 AM
So if i swap it wont deply on me or anything when I take it out? Just being sure

xoSubieLegacyxo
03-23-2011, 09:30 AM
as long as the battery is not connected to the air bag it will not deploy. But try not to use a lot of force, because they have "sensors" in them that may go off if it is beaten on! There was a kid in the collision lab that kicked the B-Pillar of a Mitsubishi and the side air bag deployed! haha

httrdd
03-23-2011, 10:42 AM
Yea disconnect the battery! All you have to do is take out the two screws from the side and it comes right out.

Huffer
03-23-2011, 12:17 PM
WTH, you removed your stock steering wheel and installed a new one without disconnecting the battery?!? Crazy...

MRLancaster
03-23-2011, 01:58 PM
I had the battery unplugged from the start.
I want to keep the momo piece....so i guess i swap the airbag itsself. Not the front cover....or is that not possible

Huffer
03-23-2011, 02:51 PM
it likely won't fit, so dismantle the stock airbag from your old wheel and see if it will fit into the MOMO cover.

Just FYI, my 98 Legacy accepted a 2003 WRX wheel fine, except I had to swap over the cruise control stalks. But the harness was plug n play.

this happened to me too... :smt017 .... If you look at the rear of the air bag you can see that there is a green (might be black) alignment piece to plug the connector into --> take that green plastic piece out very carefully by squeezing the two ends together and wiggle out slowly.
I ended up taking the little black piece outta my Legacy bag and put it into the WRX bag - mainly to keep the little pins aligned when I plugged the connector in.
Works great, I have no air bag light warning light when driving around
- You also could go get the little wiring harness from the WRX that plugs into the bag - then snap that one into your Legacy harness.

Yeah the legacy harness is too big to fit into the airbag on the wrx. So i wonder....If i got the wrx harness, if that would directly connect to the legacy cable. where you slide the pen down and to the right or w.e I will get pics of what im talking about

Just browsing and came across this thread.

Huffer, do you have some info on how you swapped the cruise stalk from your 98 Leg wheel into a MOMO wheel without a cruise stalk?

I got a leggo B4 JDM Momo but when I looked closely (luckily before dismantling the stock wheel), I noticed it didn't have the cruise lever. My 95 leggo has cruise, so I'm wondering if it's an easy fix to put the cruise lever in the momo wheel. I hope bracketry is there, and all I need to do is swap parts over, but I want to be sure before I tear into it.

thanks!

I just had to do this for a 02 WRX momo that I swapped...

It had cruise control on it already but... the bracket should be the exact same... It is one of the two brackets attached by spring bolts (the one on the right of the wheel)... You will just need to take that off... take out the screws that seperate the lower bracket (that holds the cruise control lever) and the upper bracket. Screw in your stock cruise control (after you cut a hole for it) into the lower bracket, screw the two brackets back together and then spring bolt them to the wheel.

It took me about 7 minutes.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2011/04/DSCN1847-1.jpg

In this image you can see the two metal sections... the lower one that the cruise control is screwed to and the top section that the airbag bolts into...

You undo the two bolts that are on top (like the one that has the hex wrench inserted into it) then you undo the two screws that hold the plastic cruise control on... Once you have your cruise control removed from your stock wheel, the Momo should have the exact same Metal brackets... you might need to use the lower bracket from your stock wheel... because that one fits the cruise lever already. The lower brackets were slightly different between my 99 legacy and the Momo... but they swapped out perfectly.

Huffer

^^ yep, that's it. Make sure you notch the JDM wheel for the cruise stalk first, and take your time. As long as your connectors are the same, it's a breeze.

My update (trying to run a "non- STI '98-'00" Subaru Momo wheel on a 95 legacy. *EDIT** looking at page 1, it looks like I got a WRX wheel, although I thought it was from a legacy, B4?

No go. Connectors and wheel framing not the same.

A: they don't line up and have a different spacing pattern (mine stubs are wider apart than the holes in the MOMO.
B: it'd make the ring (with the wiring contacts) out of allaignment.

Ahh. Well that's cool, but it's deffinitely not compatible with a/my second gen (95) legacy's bits. :smt012
I tried and tried but in the end I'd have cruise, maybe a horn but no airbag...IF I could have gotten the wiring through the wheel and mount the wheel on the column.

This one'll be rebounded back on the market.

well outback woodgrain airbag is the same as red or yellow MOMO, legacy or standard outbacks have slightly different shape of the cover and fit but look ugly. from what i got he needs to find a new clock spring <-- not sure if the right name. for that wheel and see if he can install that.

A WRX wheel will have the same issue with those pins...

It seems that some 95 BDs have a different steering wheel that have buttons for horns and have a different frame.

EDIT: After going through all the 95s in the members ride, I found out 2 things.
1. Most of those users have almost no pics
2. When they do have steering wheel pics, they have the same style wheel as superu and myself.

I don't really have the ability to go junkyarding in my area., so I might just sell it for now. not sure...
Or back-shelf it until later...
It's kind of just cosmetic bling anyhoo, so not as important as getting the car running (tranny swap) and figuring out my rear diff upgrades (also requiring some other model parts pirating)...

I need to know if its plug and play or do I need to do some crazy ammount of wiring.

Ok...Did some more research on it...
At the clock spring level it will not work...Its the same connector on both ends so replacing the clockspring as a plug and play wont work.

I dont want to hardwire (same fear as you, dont want to mess with that system) so I have an idea. I might see if I can change the connector on the car side by removing the pins from the airbag connector and then putting them in my stock airbag connector.

Hmmm, count first, I think there are different numbers, but I might be remembering incorrectly...
Then research your wiring diagrams very carefully!! but it sounds like a good idea! :smt026

two plugs, one for airbag and one for cruise control...
good luck
