We just bought our 2011 Legacy in February. Took it in on Tuesday of last week because of a constant rattle in the right rear of vehicle. After having it for 3 days, a factory rep came in to help them find the issue and they tell us that it is the strut and they have to replace it. Now, a week later, after waiting for parts, they replaced the strut yesterday and the rattle is still there. They are now having a factory rep come in next week to check it out. Yesterday, they mentioned possibly having to cut into the car's frame because "it sounds like it is coming from between the panels." Seriously?! Cut into a brand new car with less than 1500 miles?

The plus to this I guess, is we have had a loaner car the entire time they have had my car. Frustrating a little bit that they will have had the car for 2 weeks and that will be about a third of the time that I have had it. I guess what I am wondering, is if anyone else has had these issues and if I am crazy to think that cutting into a brand new car's frame and welding it back together, is unacceptable. I bought a brand new car for a reason.

It could easily be a trim screw that has fallen into the unibody.

A new car still has problems. Get over it.

Thanks for your input. I do realize that new cars have problems sometimes, mainly just venting a little frustration and asking for help and ideas. The sarcasm I could do without, however.

It's not sarcasm.... :)

Really, though, without more information about the rattle it could be anything. Does it happen when driving straight, turning, over bumpy ground? Have you noticed any serious issues with steering, ride comfort or tire wear?

etc
etc

It was a constant rattle, bumpy roads, straight roads, turning, driving straight, you name it. Nothing irregular in steering, etc; just annoying as heck.

The dealer actually called this afternoon and told us that they fixed the problem...turns out it was a nut leftover from attaching it to assembly line that got left in the car. Body shop actually found it. Happy that it was something so simple and no cutting and welding was required.
