Having an issue with my front end, the car is a right hand drive postal model. After about an hour on the route everday, the left front makes a hidious popping sound in tight turns either direction. I had the CV axles replace last week becase both front right & front left sides where doing this. Now that I have new CV's, the front right no longer makes this noise.

Its terrible, shakes really bad, and can feel the shimmy in the steering wheel. Feels like the wheel is trying to fall off or wobbling badly.

I've notices if i enter a turn at a low rate of speed while apllying a small amount of brake, that it does not do this. But the same low speed turn without brake gives the problem, and its also present from a stop while turning to a cross street or pulling out of a driveway.

Being new CV's, is there anything else under there that could be the problem? Its extremely annoying, and I am afraid the car is going to leave me stranded in the middle of my route.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Possible frozen brake caliper, possible torque bind if it's an Auto Trans.

If it goes away when the brakes are pressed it could be bad wheel bearings.

What can I do to check for those possible issues? (wheel bearings, brake caliper, tourge bind)

Seized brake caliper - take the caliper off, depress the piston, and put your foot on the brake pedal. If it doesn't slide freely, then you have a seized one. You'll need to replace the caliper or rebuild it.

Wheel bearing - with the brake rotor and caliper off the car, if you turn the wheel you should hear a grinding sound coming from the hub

Torque bind - IF you have an automatic transmission, have someone drive the car in a tight circle around you. If the rear tires are scrubbing or skipping, you have torque bind.

Thanks

I took it back to sears today, the front end was out of line bad, it started diving to the left coming home from work. Sears did the CV replacement for me. The guy there is insistant that the issue I am having is coming from bushing where the CV slides into the trans..... my thing is, with this car being AWD, there are no bushings.... right? The CV I assume slide right into the differential???? I'm no mechanic and I don't play one on TV, so anything dumb I say is purly talk, anyone who can debunk any ideas I split out... by all means, please do so :)

CV shafts don't have bushings on either end - just splines that go into the trans/diff and the hub.

So are you still having the "popping" issue?

Take the car somewhere else. I dont usually have a problem with Sears but all I ever do there is get tires. I find its easier to simply go somewhere else than deal with a stubborn mechanic. Also I agree with Huffer about torque bind.

ok.... have determined its a torque bind. What are the options to fix this?

Also, I still have an issue through the gears, when shifting from maybe 2nd to 3rd, after 3 or 4 seconds it seems to shift back. IDK any other way to explain that one.

I was having some idle issues, but changed the TPS and seems to be idleing better.

Look for my posts on torque bind in the trans section. Lubegard atf.
