View Full Version : Real White Face Gauges for the 97-99 Legacy!

I love the white face gauges in my wife's Impreza and have always wanted a set for the Legacy, so now I've done something about it.

SpeedHut (http://www.speedhut.com/) make high quality el-glo and reverse el-glo gauge faces, so I contacted them about producing gauge faces for the Legacy.

Long story short, a couple of weeks ago I picked up a used cluster and mailed it off to them, and now you can sign up for your own set of custom gauge faces. :D

The catch is that they need 25 pre-orders before they will go into production, so spread the word!

I've been wanting something like this for a while, but I can't justify $100+ right now. I've got other things I need to do first.

that's crazy expensive. Steve (CTGTDriver) found a website that sells overlays where you can keep your stock lighting...I don't remember the link, and he's been gone for a week.

They're not cheap, but you get what you pay for.

I've seen pics of the white overlays that just cover up the black parts of the gauges, but the problem is that the markings are still white in the daytime, so they don't stand out against the faces.

The other cool thing about these gauges is that there are a bunch of different color combinations to choose from, and the 25 people who pre-order get free custom logos.

They can also do the inner km/h markings if that's what floats your boat (it does mine).

OK... I like the idea. It's something I've wanted for a long while too. But I have a couple of questions.

What back colors do these reverse el-glo gauge faces come in? Is this just a replacement for the faces? In which case could you make the back color any color you wanted? I'm fine with white gauges in the day, but I've really gotten attached to the red back light at night.

Another question, what about the needles? To replace the face wouldn't the needles have to come off? I've heard taking off the needles can ruin the gauge, anyone know about that?

They produce a bunch of different color options, probably the best way to get a feel for the possibilities is to take a look at the flash app at the bottom of the pre-order page, which also shows the custom logos and other stuff they can do.

The faces do completely replace the stock lighting so the nighttime color options are restricted to blue or green as far as I know. I'll be gathering up the questions from this thread and NASIOC and putting together an email to SpeedHut in a couple of days, so I'll ask them about backlight color options then.

As for the needles, I believe they will need to be removed. I sent a complete cluster for development so I'm sure they will come with accurate instructions.

hmmm, the reverse glow guages they sell on eBay have enough space around the needle base that you can slide the overlay on without removing the needle.

not that I'm knocking this concept...to each their own...but those OEM needles are the PAIN to remove! In fact, I have yet to be successful.

Personally, I don't think OEM is all that bad...I like it...but don't let my 'sleeper' stance get in the way. The more OEM outward appearance, the better!

Got it. Didn't realize the "SpeedHut" was a link in the first post. That's a nice order form!

The only one I see with Red letters is a black face. I would definately want white, but not with blue or green letters for glow. In fact, white face with black letters during the day would be ideal and then red at night. I have definately found an advantage to driving at night with the red. If they could do it I would be up for it! I've put a lot of customizing into this car and that would definately be icing on the cake!!!

definitely nifty, but like ivwarrior, i cannot justify spend $100 on soemthing like this.

I contacted Speedhut a couple of years ago when I was in NZ and looking for EL gauges for my Impreza.

Their prices haven't changed in 2 years, but they were responsive then, as well.

I can't justify $100 on something like that, though (not now).

But good luck! :)

I started this on the old forum when we were "Subaru Legacy Online" ah those were the days. Anyway the thread was lost with EVERYTHING else. Since then I forgot about it (I didn't have many people interested at the time) But I might be done if I see something I like. I might get TWO

i like this idea and went ahead with ordering. so far it only shows one order so it looks like this may take a while.

AussieDan

Awesome, that's 1 in less than 24 hours....we should be able to knock this over in less than a month ;)

what about you, Dan?

AussieDan

I'm not counted in the 25, because I get my set 'free'.

I've invested $80 in the cluster and shipping, so it's not like I'm coming out ahead....and of course if they don't get 25 orders I'm out $80.

Looking back I probably should have made this clear in the first post, the last thing I want is anyone to think I'm trying to take advantage of them.

03-14-2006, 12:39 PM
oh no. i completely understand, so don't get me wrong.

not to insult your intelligence, i've seen a few people do a count, come up one short and compeletely forgot to include themselves. :-D

AussieDan

No worries, just wanted to make sure everything is out in the open, I've seen too many people try to pull a fast one on various forums over the years.

You're right about forgetting to count yourself though....all too easy to do.

I guess these aren't available with the KM on the outer ring and MPH on the inner?

Legacy4Life
03-14-2006, 06:01 PM
Gee, I never even thought about that. I would need the same thing as Cajual because we use km/h in Canada, not mph. Probably they'll only do one set since they would need another cluster for the km/h.

I guess that eliminates me in the end. Sorry about that. It was a very good idea.

Wiscon_Mark
03-14-2006, 06:21 PM
keep in mind, 95-96 people can't help you out either...you're working with a pretty small group :( and for 100 bucks, it'll be hard to get 25 people to buy.

AussieDan
03-14-2006, 08:34 PM
Yeah I know rounding up 25 people is a tough ask, I had to give it a shot though.

As for the km/h version, they usually charge $10 for that but I believe they will waive it for the 25 pre-orders. I will add this to my list of questions for when I email them later this week.

UPDATE:

Hi,

Yes, we offer either Km/h or MPH or both! This is a free option within our
Model Development program.

Thanks,

are the 96 guages different?

Wiscon_Mark

the 96 guages go to 140mph, correct? yes, these ones in the this thread are 120mph guages, they're different.

hmm.. interesting. here's another question....why does a 95 have a "door ajar" diagram in the center of the guages, a 96 does not, and a 97 does....

you follow?

Alright then, if they will do it with km/h on the outside and mph on the inside then I'm in. It sounds like once they develope the template we are not all stuck having to get the same thing. (ie: background color, font style, font color, etc...) There could be 25 different gauges in the end, but all to replace the same model of gauge. Am I reading the situation correctly?

Now I just need to find the money! Good work AussieDan.

That's the deal in a nutshell, the 25 order requirement is to set up the tooling for the gauges themselves, all of the configurable options are up to each person.

I'll be asking them later this week about adding 'Subaru' and 'Legacy' to their 'standard logo' catalog. I could also ask about adding the SLI logo if anyone was interested.

yeah, I'm wondering if it isn't just a bulb though? It seems like a really odd move. Have you ever had your cluster apart to check?

Legacy4Life
03-15-2006, 10:43 AM
Isn't the '96 just one bulb for any door ajar? I know on mine it has individual indicators for each door and the tailgate.

i poked around a little and i have to ay, these orices are really quite competitive considering the level of customization available.

If other people are interested I will do it.

I am just reluctant because I don't want to wait for 25 people to order. Once some more orders get in, Ill go for it!!

Anyone else interested at this point?

AussieDan
06-14-2006, 09:55 AM
Hey guys,

This is kind of a chicken and egg type problem, I know quite a few people who are all sitting back waiting for more pre-orders.

It's only $1 and if you end up deciding you don't want to go ahead you can cancel the order because they call every person to verify before they charge the remainder of the order.

i made these my self for less than 10 bucks.... they light up pink at night like el glow gauges.... the picture sucks because the plastic covers were scratched to shit i hadnt replaced them yet, these are for my gf's 79 civic. you can do this trick in just about any car lol. and get the same look/effect as speedhuts.

dont get me wrong speedhut is nice i put a set of those in my old frontier. but these are every bit as good lol.

DIY thread?

when i get my legacy, and do this, i will post a DIY thread with the legacy gauges step by step. i actually turned this into a business for a while for a few 1st gen civic friends out there on another forum.

but let me finish a set of legacy gauges before i run my mouth to much. might end up the legacy is one of the few you cant do it on. but i doubt it.

but ill do it soon, my legacy is closer and closer every day.
