View Full Version : Dead's Nissan Pulsar GTI-R update 11-5-15

Dead91silvia

The GTI-R's were a low production number car from 90-94. Less then 15,000 made in 4 years.

Ok, so the story goes like this... I got this car from a friend that didnt have the time for it, he got it from a friend that got it for parts. Well that friend got it from someone that was over there head in project to start with. The car was cut in half, I'm assuming, so it could be imported meaning it was not road worthy. Well, they tack welded it together and then didnt finish it and did it half assed. I got it and wanted the car to be done right so I cut it back apart and did it the right way.

This poor car has been bouncing from home to home getting in worse shape each time. I almost have her ready for the road and that has been my goal the whole time, to have a clean some what stock RNN14 Pulsar GTiR...

It was already here.. and is a work in progress....

just because its here doesn't mean its legal ;)

I cant wait to see the work on this :D

Just been on the Skyline forums for awhile. Those guys have it rough.

Dead91silvia
04-02-2011, 11:13 AM
Well, really any car is almost imposable to paper in WA if it's imported under 25 years of age, but there are ways around it, you just need to know them. The hard thing is I want it legal so when I sell it, I wont have problems. I know guys that have had theys and taged them as VW Golf's since they look the same... haha

Holy christ!! I just fapped!! I am a Nissan guy at heart, and had an 88 NX Pulsar SE with a CA18DE and that car was a blast! I was toying with the idea of a CA18DET and AWD swap from an Aussie EXA.

I love these little cars. Hot Hatch doesn't even do it justice.

If I am not mistaken Nissan had to push this car out in low numbers to satisfy the emission specs to keep pushing out fire breathign RB26DETT godzillas :-D

Same situation as GeoMetro still in production to balance out all the big V8's still being made.

Either way cool beans and I love the fact that its a SR20DET & AWD. 240SX FTL!

They call these things the baby "R"s... I cant wait to drive this thing! They only made about 15,000 in 4 years, so its cool ether way!

I got some work done the other night...

Chizzed off most of the sound deadening crap for welding and got carried away... haha

I curious about the chassis welding. I'm familiar with the purpose, I just want pics along the way! Looks like the sound deadening was a paint to get off, what were you using? Did you weigh what you removed?

Dead91silvia
04-27-2011, 12:54 AM
I'm getting ready to cut the car back in half so I can sleeve the rockers and A-pillar and I'm going to take pics of everything.

As for how and how much I took off... It's in a pile on the left front pan. I'm going to put it in a bag and see how much it really was. I just used a big flat head screwdriver and a hammer.. haha... took a little over an hour. Nissan's are not to bad to take it off of, but my Volvo project, its a career...

Dead91silvia
07-29-2011, 12:24 AM
Let the welding and measuring begin!

This is gonna be a PITA!!! I got the sleeves built and half installed... Working on figuring out measurements. I'm gonna be using my friends GTIR to get my numbers when I have the time to drive over... But its on the way! I got my half cut with all the rest of my parts so Im hoping to have it on the road before the end of summer!

These are all pics of the sleeve work I'm doing... never mind the crappy welds, I need new tips and possibly a handle... :smt017

Interesting. So you had to cut the frame in half and then weld it back together? Is this to "show" that the car was imported in two halves?

Dead91silvia
07-29-2011, 11:51 AM
Well, the original people that got it here cut her in half to bring it in. I'm assuming that they brought it right into the Port of Seattle and they will not let a complete body RHD car in without cutting it...

They had done a half ass weld together. I'm a perfectionist at times so it was bugging me. Also this way, it will be more ridged then before and wont need a cage. Sleeving takes care of alining, and also rigidity. It's more for myself then anything. Also when I go to sell it, it might make the next owner feel better about it.

That is FU*KIN EPIC!

I've done only 1 re-weld in my time and it was nothing on this magnitude.

You sir are top notch!

Awesome! There are a few of these on base actually. I didn't know they had an Sr20 and AWD.... Nice!

Dead91silvia
07-30-2011, 10:37 AM
I hoping I'm doing this all right. I watched someone do it in class about 10 years ago when I was taking autobody in College. It's all in measuring everything right. I know the welds are good enough and done in the right spots. Just a bit nervous about having the windshield pulled out of the frame. No other car in the states is the same so I would be ordering a JDM one and I dont even want to know how much that would be...

and thanks for the kind words! She should turn out nice. I cant wait to have another Turbo car again! I miss having boost! I'm thinking after this one it will be a Skyline or maybe more logically a GT-B.

Alright... got more work done.

I got my measurements and did a butt load of welding this last weekend. I ran out of Argon, but got it re-filled and should be doing some more welding soon...

Some measurements I took off my friends Pulsar at UP Garage USA/Fairlady Motors...
He's been a great friend to have! He was more then happy to let me do what I needed to. He knows I wont hurt his car and wants to see this one on the road...

Nope... 25 yeah or older... "Classics"... You guys in Canada can get them, but not us. Motorex in CA got Skylines in because they did a ton of work to make them conform with USDOT. But not all Skylines are legal. I have a couple friends that have R-32's that are holding on to them till they hit the 25 year make. GT-B's are not legal ether, but these kinda of cars we did have so the paperwork is not super crazy, thats why I want one of those after my Pulsar is done...

So yeah, any can 1986 and older, not a problem... :smt022

Huffer, I'm not a polished wheel kinda guy, and I dont have the OEM wheels... Sadly... I'm most likely going to get some 16's off Ebay just to have something to roll on that dont look like crap. It sucks building 4 different cars up. Gotta split the funds up...

Dead91Silvia's got it right, anything older than 25 years in the USA is usually no issue, same goes for anything older than 15 years in Canada. Having said that, I have recently seen 2 complete (non welded) JDM imports recently, one was a Legacy GT-B wagon (twin turbo etc) and one was a v5/6 Impreza STi Type R. both were definitely not legal to have in the USA but it makes me want one even more...

having said all that, i'm jealous of this build and even moreso of the Evo 5 in that pic. is that thing whole or was it welded back together?

Dead91silvia
10-17-2011, 09:37 PM
Yeah, it's tricky having an imported car... I really have no idea who the original people where that got this car here. I'm walking a fine line with it, but it's worth it...

My friends Evo was brought into Canada legally and then delivered here. Right now he's working on tagging it. Not sure how yet, but he's trying to find a lope hole... I got my GT-B lope hole in my driveway.... a 96 L wagon... muhahaha

The most cool thing I forgot to tell you guys, she has power! I still cant try and start her up yet though, fuel and brake lines still need to be repaired, but this is a start!

So far everything works, other then the power windows (one bad regulator and a bad switch). All the lights work, the wipers (note to self, make sure they are not ON when you hook up the battery and you have no window!), turn signals, high beams, city lights, hazards, and I even got a cd player hooked up! Cant for the life of my figure out why the right front speaker is dead though...

Got some more work done...

I decided to attempt removing my windshield myself... With mixed results... :smt009

Everything was going great! I decided that since no one could guaranty that it would not come out broken, I would save the money and try myself. I got it out, but with a little damage. However, I'm still going to use it since we have NO cars in North America that have the same window.

A friend told me about the torch method. It worked great till I over heated one corner of the window and cracked it. It's a low crack and I might be able to live with it till I can afford a new one from Japan (about $700).

Well here are the pics... I now know how to remove a window with a torch. Simple really, just dont heat up the glass too much. What happens is the paint will detach it's self from the metal and come off with the seal and the glass. I used a wire to cut the parts that didnt detach. Worked excellent!

This is the frame the window was in... frame was cut from another car...

Have you thought about Lexan glass? Affordable, strong, easy to cut.. just needs up keep to make sure its clear through the months..

Dead91silvia
04-13-2012, 12:56 PM
I had one of those... One, you need the window fixed, as in cant move... Two, I used mine and broke a Subaru window...

I know how I messed up the glass, so next time it wont be a problem...

As for Lexan, I'm already walking a fine line with legal, illegal, so I'm just gonna do it the right way. Plus the next owner I'm sure would want a normal piece of glass installed... Lexan is only legal for race use only when it comes to cars. A couple Pulsar guys have them in Canada, but they dont like it...

04-13-2012, 01:09 PM

Yeah, most the time I use wire to cut windows out, but never had luck with it. The heat work great, I just should have practiced on something not so damned rare! :banghead:

I would love to get a NEO head (late model) for it, everyone says thats the best head to have and it adds a ton of power, but for now just stock. a bigger turbo might be in the cards, but again just gonna play with it stock for now.

I have a EVO V FMIC I'm gonna pipe in, they say that give a bit of power also since the flow for the intercooler sucks balls. It's right on top of the motor with no flow through like the Subarus have...

Thats about it for now...

JDM yo! And yes, I'm leaving them on! Can anyone tell me what they say? haha
The "17" has to do with the year the car was registered. A lot of Japan's date systems use the era instead of the year. right now they are in Heisei era, which started when this emperor took over. Right now it is Heisei 24, so it was registered 7 years ago by that sticker. The numbers around it are 1-12 for the months. You pull off the one that the car was registered in so that way you (and cops) know when it expires just by looking at it. The small one is road tax, if I remember right. I got a couple of stickers and that big one with the number on it the same day so I can't really remember which one is which. I know that doesn't tell you what it said, but gives you an idea of what they are for.

XCr4sh OverideX
04-29-2012, 07:49 PM
Close Yoko, the small one is for JCI, (Japanese Compulsory Insurance) which is an inspection that we have to have every 2 years that says the car is roadworthy, and that can cost around $400-500 depending on the exchange rate, plus you also have to fix any problems they find during the inspection prior to actually passing and getting the sticker, the big one is the Road tax that we have to pay every year, and depending on a few factors determines the price of that, the biggest factor is the size of the engine, if you have a 2.0 liter or smaller than you only pay about $75, if its bigger than that you pay around $200. You are right on the numbers though, that is the 17th year of the emperor that it last had road tax paid, and the JCI was good until the 7th month (July) of the 18th year of the emperor which was 2006.

have to change the little one out ever 2yrs, once it come off its useless. the one with the 17 is the year that cars inspection died. cant get those either.

194k is normal for the gtir. peopel normaly dont junk them unless there is something majorly wrong. japanese have to take there cars to a shop for everything, so it gets expensive. my laurel is almost at 122k, and runs like a top.

Do you think there would be a way to get a scan on one of those stickers? I can have them make over here if I have a scan. The little one is in good shape, but the other one is so trashed..

Also, I know that plates are car/region specific. You guys wouldnt by chance know what the plate would look like on my car, would ya? Would be cool to have them for car shows...

Yokosilver
04-30-2012, 05:52 PM
The region on the plate has to do with where it was registered. If you look at the pictures, Crash and I have different plates on our cars. The kanji at the top of the plate shows where it was registered. Mine shows Yokohama. I don't know where Crash had his registered so I can't say what his is. The car specific part is the numer after the kanji. Legacy's are 500 plates because of their engine size. I haven't seen any Pulsars around so I don't know what numbers yours would be. If someone on here can find those numbers for you, it would be easy to make a plastic replica - just find one of those fake plates and turn it around so that it is white and get decals made for kanji and numbers across the top. The plates that I really like that I have seen out here are the back lit ones. From time to time I will see one that the characters are lit up with green lights from behind.

XCr4sh OverideX
04-30-2012, 07:31 PM
There used to be 2 GTI-Rs here on base, I know for a fact that 1 guy lives in the same dorm as me, If I see his car soon Ill snap a picture of his plate, they are 500s as well if I'm not mistaken, anything 2.0 Liters or smaller is a 500 plate, bigger is a 300. I thought mine was registered in Tachikawa, but that's not the symbols for Tachikawa, the way most of us here remember Tachikawa is a shake and three fries ??, so I don't know. The back lit plates are special order, from what I have been told they are very hard for Americans to get, I don't know why.

Shake and fries is funny. For Yokosuka, we remember Skinny guy fat guy watching TV with a pot on the stove. ???.

I think making a plastic plate with decals to match would be easiest. Since you know that it is a 500 plate, you can copy Crash or mine. You can get creative and put a different city's kanji on top. Maybe find out what city the Pulsar was first produced in and put that on there.

XCr4sh OverideX

Well, I got a couple things figured out...

Replaced the driver window motor... That was interesting... Found that the left rear door motor from a USDM 1998 Sentra was exactly the same! So the driver door window works now! I just need to figure out why it like to bind on the way up...

As for the passenger door, this one is being a pain to figure out. Found a new switch from a 89 Sentra that plugged in. It has power, but I cant get anything from it. No up or down. I can run the window up or down with jumper wires, but thats it... cant figure this one out to save my life!

Yokosilver
06-07-2012, 08:39 PM
Do you still have access to the Sentra you got the parts from? Maybe try using the window buttons from that. The buttons you are using might be dead or have dirty contactors.

Dead91silvia
06-08-2012, 12:59 AM
I got it from a rear door, they never get used... My Pulsar switch does the same thing also... The driver switch in the Sentra was gone also... Nice I had a 88 Red Pulsar NX back in the day. I did miss it due to the T-Tops. I went thru the original motor and 2nd motor and both motor blew. I donated it.

Well, I've had a few problems with the Pulsar smoking at stop lights. Wasnt sure why, so I did a compression test.

Cyl #1-85 psi
Cyl #2-110 psi
Cyl #3-125 psi
Cyl #4-125 Psi

Low comp in #1. Not sure why yet.

I did pull the valve cover to see if there was anything messed up inside and I found a nice surprise! :smt026

Most likely has something like an HKS headgasket. I'm tempted to check out the bottom end to see if anything has been done there as well. We are thinking cylinder one might have a burnt valve, but not sure yet.

Yeah, it was nice to find the upgrades. I might be finding out at the end of summer about the bottom end. Motor might need to come out because of the low compression issue. We will see.

In more current news! I decided I wanted to do a cone filter (just to hear more fun stuff) and I knocked the MAFS around apparently and messed it all up. When I went to start it up, the car ran like crap. Friend told me to look at the MAFS. It had a missing screw and had corroded the living hell out of the housing making it run crappy. I cleaned it up and little Penny runs faster then ever! I have some pics, but I'll need to upload them a little later.

Also, I'm looking for a set of new wheels for it right now. I cant stand how bad it handles with the super tall snow tires. Fun on dirt, but sucks for corners.

Havent done much to it other then just drive it a bit bit. I did pick up some TEIN coilovers this last week though. Taking a little bit of work to make them nice again, but it will be nice to have good suspension on it and I'm using the old stuff for the other Pulsar.

Hey Dead, Just happened to see this on CL today local to me. Thought about ya!

Nissan pulsar gtir front clip RHD. Imported from japan .
It was purchased as a complete running car and was disassembled and shipped to the usa. every single part that could fit in the container comes with the car . doors hatch dash seats fuel pump wheels front and rear drive train it is a all wheel drive car. it has the sr20det with individual throttles. it has a turbo timer and other jdm nick nacks. I am just pricing this low to sell as a whole package it is far less than what I payed for the car and shipping my loss is your gain. you can part it out and make a profit .
