Extremely tasteful. I liked everything Wes did, and it looks like I'll like everything you do as well.

Welcome aboard, and welcome back "2.5GT"

Ok so my first DIY project was removing the chrome from the outside of the L7 grill. I've never been a fan of chrome and I just felt it was throwing the front end of the car off. I was up at a local auto parts having them mix me some paint for my wheels and figured I'd get a spray can of Rio Red while I was there.

I used some 800 grit sandpaper to roughen up the chrome finish then used some 91% rubbing alcohol to clean off any grease/residue.

Taping this off was a huge PITA! :smt013

All this work and I put it on and it's the wrong color. It's not even like "Oh that car is 10 years old so the paint is faded" it's just flat out the wrong color... Anyway, I don't think the Red was a good idea anyway so I'm just going to redo it black and post some pictures when it's done.

Thank you thank you!

I was really skeptical about buying a modded car. Not only because you really don't know whats been done, but because most of them have been built to suit the builder. I was so impressed with everything Wes had done I knew it would be a great platform to start from.

Did you have to modify the GC RA flaps to fit?

mycargoesvroom
04-05-2011, 09:08 PM
@ Kirby- Yup I did get the BBS's but I sold them. I love the wheels but never been my style.

@ Reason- Thanks for the tip, I'll give it a look. I bought Dupont paint but I'm not sure if the halftard behind the counter actually knew what he was doing... It was my first time buying paint over the counter like that so next time I'll do a bit more research.

@ESSY- I'm 99% sure they're Impreza flaps but I'm not sure what was involved fitting them. I did notice they sit a little off because of the side skirts but other then that they fit fine. I don't see any signs of cutting or any new holes so I doubt much was involved to get them to fit.

I'll have some new pictures up tomorrow night probably. The car is sitting at a friends house on stands while the wheels get re finished. I had originally planned to keep them white so I bought some Aspen White paint to have them sprayed but the guy doing it sent me some pics of the bare aluminum and they look sooooooooooooooooooooooo smooth :D

Well I got the wheels back on yesterday and I'm definitely not digging the silver. I guess because of the blasting media he used they came out a matte silver and it just looks too blah.
https://sl-i.net/FORUM/images/imported/2011/04/wheels-1.jpg

I'm going to prep them and paint em flat black tonight and see how it turns out.

Huffer
04-07-2011, 04:58 PM
Urgh, not flat black. So overdone. What was wrong with the white originally?

mycargoesvroom
04-07-2011, 05:07 PM
Nothing except it's impossible to keep clean. I had planned to have them sprayed with Aspen White and cleared by a good friend but I had a lapse in judgement and told him to leave them silver thinking they'd have a brighter finish. When I stripped them myself the first time they looked awesome in silver but something about the blasting media dulled them this time and they look like poo.

Suggestions for colors?

This is what they looked like when I stripped them the first time with aircraft paint stripper. I wish the finish was like this now, and if I knew a way to get them looking like this again I'd be all over it.

White with red lugs. I think that would look good (I would have to see a pic)?

mycargoesvroom
04-07-2011, 05:38 PM
If I redo them white I'm going to hate my self every time I have to clean them. I rattle canned them white and they were a BITCH to keep clean. I have HPS pads and the amount of dust they produce blackened the white in a matter of days. If you look at the 3rd picture from the bottom in the first post you can see how stained the white is and that's after washing and cleaning them...

I guess I could redo them white and just clear the ever lasting piss out of them and hope for the best.

Oh, and I have McGuards black spline lock lugs. I think the only thing I would trade them for is something in a burnt finish.

If youve stripped the wheels prior, thats different to sand blasting. Its dull because its pitted, minutely. You could just prime it and paint it with any high gloss color (metal fleck base?) from the auto store. Hit it with some gloss clear for a great finish.

mycargoesvroom

I just got back from finish up the wheels and they came out awesome. Took around 6 hours to do so I'm praying they hold up longer then a few days. I'm going to go out tomorrow and put a coat of wax on them so hopefully they're a little easier to clean.

Hmm, I wish I got more details, I dont want to spend $100 on a set of RA's and have to do a ton of modifying

I'll snap a few pictures for you today so you can see how they're bolted in. Honestly it looks almost plug and play but you might have to drill 1 hole on the inside to mate up the the factory spot. I don't think you'd spend any more then 20 minutes to get them on.

Just got back from doing a bit of wet sanding to the wheels. Theres a few spots that need touch ups but over all they seem to be holding up pretty well.

Tomorrow should be pretty eventful, I'm finally going to get around to hard wiring in my radar and most likely moving my OEM sub under the driver side seat from the passenger side where it is now.

LOVE IT! Makes me kinda miss MY first Subaru, my own Rio Red '97 2.5GT BD.

Miss it so much but I still have parts from it to cuddle when the need arises..... uhh.... anyhow.....

How do you like the 2.5RS seats? Going to pick up a front set for my wagon in a few hours. The stock flat two tone grey leather seats from said 2.5GT just aren't good for my back anymore.

Finally got around to coloring the carpet today. I gotta say the dye went on way easier then I thought, and it only took me about 30 mins to completely cover the carpet. It's outside baking in the Florida sun for about another 30 mins or so then I'm going to go back over it and let it dry over night. Tomorrow I'll go out and mist it real lightly and wipe it down, let it dry again and scotch guard it before throwing it back it.

Also going on the hunt for some fabric tomorrow to re do the door cards and cover the visors. After that I'll be pulling the headliner and Im going to use that spray on dye for it and plasti-dip the rest of the grey parts.
