Out of the few cars I've been looking at one outback I want the seller says they had just replaced the clutch but the transmission started to have this problem of the car stalling when shifting between 1st and 2nd gear.. still waiting to hear back if it's in all gears or just 1st and 2nd.

having said that is this serious enough to need a new transmission?

Um, if the car stalls between 1st and 2nd it means the clutch isn't engaging fast enough to keep the revs up?

I have no clue man I'm trying to find just as much info as you are..

the car is a 97 so I think it's a hydraulic clutch? What I'm trying to figure out is if that's the case how would you make the clutch engage quicker? I know nothing much about that setup.

*edit ok it seems like it's a cable operated clutch?

hmm possible slave cylinder?

waiting to hear back.. I asked these questions

Does the car shift with the engine off?
Does it grind out then stall?
Does it stall when pushing the clutch in or only when you pull it out of gear?
And last has it been doing this before the clutch install or after?

If it won't go into any gear, you should just budget for a new clutch and transmission. Just easier that way.

but it could be the slave cylinder I wont know until I go next week to check it out.

This is what I got back

"The clutch was replaced around this time last year it was fine up until January when I replaced a gear link between 1st and 2nd that's when it started giving me trouble. I was driving and I was turning a corner in 1st and went to switch into 2nd and the car did a jerk and stopped. The engine was still running but when I tried to put it into 1st it wouldn't go 2nd same thing I even tried to put it in reverse and it wouldn't go."

Anyone know what the final drive is for a 97 outback 5mt.. Is it 4.44?

I went to see the car (paid for)

No HG leak.. only thing is the tranny was like bone dry so I went out and put in 2 qt of diff fluid..

Anyways while I did not drive the car more then 2 Ft forward and backwards I had no problems with 1st, 2nd or getting into reverse.. HOWEVER in neutral or any gear the tranny makes this sound I'm so sorry I did not do a video on my phone I forgot all about it..

the closest sound I can describe it as being a rotating sound from what sounds like from inside the tranny.. I'm not sure if it would be the TOB I felt the tranny case and I did not feel that much vibration so it could be the TOB?

Anyways 2 Qt got me up to the middle of the diff dipstick.

Also no HG issues that I can see of but I did not let it fully warm up since the gas was very low and the light was on but good thing I brought my HF jump pack with me since the battery was flat.

other then that above it looked good.

Question is 5th gear a gear by it's self on the input shaft? I only ask because I don't have 5th gear (all the others work) but I noticed while it just revs in 5th moving the shifting slightly you can hear a tiny bit of gear noise.
