Sunroof woes

What up!! :lol:

Man, my poor Legacy is dying.. well not literally, but rust is taking over and it's starting to show signs of age.. my poor baby!

My sunroof doesn't open up or retract back either. It does, but only one side of it? The driver side doesn't move with the switch but if I put force on it manually, it goes.

I know I need to remove the head liner (bummer) but what am I looking at to replace? Is there two motors? A track? What sort of parts are up in the roof that can cause this crappy situation?

It's come off the rails, literally.

Basically, the sunroof is a "cassette" style structure - the glass slides back into a holder that is hidden under the headliner.

There was a write up here or on the Legacy section of NASIOC about how to fix it if it's come off the rails, but you have to drop the whole headliner to get in there.

If/when this happens to my car, I'm removing the whole thing and going with a manual pop/slide sunroof. Or none at all, and just have a lexan plastic window installed. I'll save about 100lbs.

I had similar issues a few years ago, IMO the cause is poor engineering. I ripped it all apart and found the cable had pulled out of the ferules on the guides on one side. It didn't take long for the other side to pull out as well when I pulled it open and shut while holding the button. I followed a guide on legacygt that i found and re-crimped the ferrules and put jb weld on the cable behind them so they couldn't pull out even if the crimp failed. Hasn't failed in 3 years.
