How do you replace a torn front cv joint? Do I need to replace the entire cv half shaft assembly? If so, how do you do that?

While the cost to replace the CV boot appears cheaper, it is usually more practical in the long run to just replace the entire axle as the cost isn't much more and the time taken is usually less than having to deal with the broken boot and reassembly, all while keeping the actual bearings clean.
There are a lot of DIYs out there and a lot of them say you need to remove the balljoint and the axle nut - you don't. Just by turning the hub you can actually get the axle out because it can flex quite a bit.

Yep, just get in there and yank it out. It's not too difficult of a job.

Actually my biggest problem was getting the pin out that holds the axle to the transmission. Finding the right size punch/bar to go in the hole but not too small that it would drop into the actual pin was challenging. I eventually lucked out and found a metal wire that was the perfect diameter and used that as my punch.
DONT LOSE THE PINS

I've done a few axles and they're stupid easy. Don't pop the ball joint just take the strut bolts out, pop out the pin and use an impact to remove the axle not. Rotate the hub and the axle will come right out. Check out Rockauto.com, I paid $50 for my last axle.

you need an alignment if you do that, you don't if you pop undo to balljoint

^^ you can just mark the bolts before you undo them.
