RS 5spd + EG33 swap.....can it handle the torque?

I am planning on swapping my EG33 swapped legacy to a 5spd. I picked up a 4.11 5spd from an 98 RS and plan on running it with a stage 2 or 3 clutch and a HD pressure plate.

I am wondering if this transmission will hold up behind the EG33's added torque? I am only hard on the car off pavement, and only run it once or twice a month.

I don't want to dump a ton of cash into a 6spd or aftermarket gear set, just trying to keep it cheap and simple.

If you are only using it hard on gravel, then you'll be fine. It's the good traction of pavement that breaks these things. Plus I think that the EG33 is easier on manual trannys because the torque delivery is more gradual and smooth, compared to a turbo which hits it in big lumps.

Any recommendations on a clutch and pressure?

ACT, Exedy or clutch masters, all brands I can get and would use. I can also get centerforce and a few others but I have no experience with so I can't recommend.

Match your clutch to the output of the engine... and then save for a new tranny or rebuild. Spinning tires in gravel won't last long, because you'll want to go faster (more grip) and then you'll start breaking gears.

Thanks for the all the info so far. I am surprised at how well the old 4eat is taking the abuse so far. I am planning on getting a set of lightly used A035 gravel tires off a local stage rally competitors car, so that may not help the situation.

Are early model JDM V2-V4 transmission any tougher then our local stuff?

I might just hold out and save up for a JDM 4.44 5spd setup.

I am happy running the 4eat until it blows up, I just wanted a little summer project for the rally-x off season.

i'd grab a set of those case braces and install them before you install the transmission, the 5 spd cases can flex a lot at the rs level of torque 3.3L would be even harsher imho

there is a guy running a STi engine with a stock legacy 2.2 trans on nasioc. i dont have the link about the thread but he talks about how to get the trans to hold up. the key is
1) dont dump the clutch, or gear slam. get rolling before you give it full power.
2) if you run a really low quality clutch with a HD pressure plate the pressure plate will keep it from slipping the majority of the time but the low quality clutch will let go and slip before the trans breaks.
basically with that much power, somethings got to give. beef up the trans, diffs and axles will go.
beef up those and the tires will go.
so when you get a low quality clutch you are "controlling" the situation by creating a weak point in the chain. you will probably need to chang clutches yearly but the trans will live.

Those are some decent prices but I think I might try to make one myself since I'm going to be making a custom plate for my jack to r&r the trans and make the plate a little bit beefier. I plan on installing my spare trans soon and this would be nice addition, Im sure I can source some good bolts around town as well.

I was thinking the same thing, that brace looks like it would take about 10 minutes to make, definitely worth a shot, I can't see how it could possibly hurt anything haha.
