MAF and a K&N issues

Do you guys recommend a k&n filter when you have a MAF? Over at legacyGT they for theist part say the oil is messing up the MAF. Is there any truth to that? Have any of you had that issue?

Just dab the thing with a paper towel before you install it. It'll remove the excess oil that they put on it at the factory.

I've seen tons of cars with maf issues caused by K&N filters. But they were customers cars, so I don't really know how much of that is caused by the filter and how much is caused by the customer over-oiling the filter.

Regardless, there are options out there that work just as well without using an oiled filter.

I'm running a K&N filter and theres no problems with my MAF right now!

Because most of the people on LGT.com have barely turned a wrench in their lives, let alone open the hood, and they probably over-oil the filter whenever they clean it.

As you probably guessed, I have had no issues with my air filters that need oiling.

On the other hand, there aren't a lot of gains to be had with just a KN panel filter...I'd stick with paper until I was forced to go with an oil type due to a new intake or something...

Like Ouch said, I have seen plenty of customers cars with K&Ns and problems. They don't seem to ever clean well, especially if you go too long between cleanings. Once they are really dirty, the filtering media becomes damaged and the whole filter must be replaced. The filter i recommend over K&N is the ITG filter. Harder to find, but a much better filter.

I've had good luck with AEM dryflow filters.

But, as rougeben said, unless you are using an intake that requires a different filter, the stock panel filter will out flow the stock air box, which will likely outflow the stock engine.

I would just use a $5 Fram filter. I've not noticed a difference in performance or mileage over any other "performance" brand filter.

If you really want something washable, Perrin makes a foam filter that's supposed to work nicely.

I use Fram filters as well. In my opinion the only thing you get from a K&N filter is a lighter wallet.

I currently have K&N's on all 4 of my vehicles (3 with MAF's). All have seen over 100,000 km with zero issues. They are fine as long as you dont over oil. I can't comment on the Fram air filters, but when I bought my first K&N there was enough dyno data floating around to convince me to spend a little more on a filter that will last me the life of the vehicle. If you gain a few hp bonus.
