I just got done swapping a blown engine in my 98 limited. Everything seemed fine, but i cant even get down the road two miles and is overheated. I did not push the issue and parked the car. I pulled out the thermostat, and tested it in boiling water. I guess thats ok.
Im thinking it has to be the water pump.

And your sure its not a blown head gasket?
Is your coolant milky?

Just in case it is not an air problem.... where did you get the motor from? A trusted source? If you can see the coolant moving with a flashlight when you open the cap your water pump should be ok. A failed water pump will most often leak. Are you loosing coolant or is there any puddles. Hope to god that it is not what chuck just said. Trying burbping the system first.

Are you getting heat from the heater? If not, airbubble in your coolant system, you need to jack the car up and burp it.

I dont get any heat from the ducts. Im not entirly sure how to burp the engine, and there was no flow after taking the radiator cap off.
Im going to take it to get a combustion check sometime this week to see if it is a HG.
This engine i bought was from a shot in the dark 1-800 number. (i got tired of looking) but i purchased a 2.2 instead of the 2.5 due to reliability issues with the bigger engine.
and one last thing the vehicle only overheats when the vehicle is in motion. as i slow down, or just park it, the temp creeps back down to normal.
Thanks everyone

There's definitely air in the system. Do a quick google search on how to burp the system and you should be good to go.

I am pretty sure I know what the problem is...

Did you buy a new thermostat? Was it a subaru brand thermostat?
I put in a thermostat from Autozone and it made my car overheat within 5 minutes of driving... look at the two side by side...

I dont think the autozone thermostat can push as much water through it as the OEM one... I put my used thermo back in and havent had any issues... that was 20,000 miles ago.

The one on the left is the one i got in the car. I know well enough to go with genuine Subaru parts
