I am looking to get some more power and decided the eg33 route was a little more then I wanted to work with.
So I am wondering what the easiest(cheapest) way to get a ej22t running obdII
I have a N/A ej22 already but do I need to get heads, manifold, and harness from a WRX? Or is there are sweet cheater method?

Ej22T block w/ crank sensor + Ej25D heads + EJ25D intake manifold with all accessories + EJ22T thorttle body + some massaging to fit + piggy ecu.
I wouldn't say this is easier then the EG33 but it is a replacement for displacement.

I'm not sure the SOHC EJ22 ECU will run the EJ25D? You'll probably need more than a piggyback - I'd go with the SOHC EJ25 heads/manifold.

EJ22 ecu runs the EJ25D perfectly fine. I've swapped a 98 EJ25D in a 95 EJ22E chassis w/ ECU.. Fuel Maps are a little off but daily driven is fine.

how about turboing a 22e? Do I stick with the heads I have or move to something dual port and drop the compression?
My goal is not wrx killer but merely decent power gains for the money spent. My buddy did a stage2 wrx swap in his machine and it is wayyyyyy wayy way too fast for what I want.

I would just turbo the ej22e you have with a home made turbo kit. with the money you save you could get a couple more ej22e's just in case yours ever blew.
it doesn't have to be as complicated as so many people make it out to be. you Dont need 2.5 heads and you don't need a 22t block to make fun, (fairly) reliable power.

Money isn't a huge issue, I just don't want to spend 3K+ on a wrx set up when I know I won't use the power. I want to keep things in the $1000-1200 range and make roughly 200whp's
the real issue is down time. I don't want to have to rip into a lot of the car and do a lot of trial and error kind of crap.
I may really just be a candidate for a good old fashion franken engine :lol:

Low budget builds... get some dual port heads from a 95' EJ22 or Impreza equal and bolt on some wrx bits with a piggy back @ 4psi and wait until the knocking and detonation happens :-D

^ why bother swapping the heads, yes you can use a wrx exhaust manifold then, but you cant use the wrx manifold without the cross member...etc....
just modify the stock manifold for and up pipe and then route your down pipe and you can use whatever turbo you want..
Edit.. looks like you can buy and up pipe and just use your stock manifold..

also, the ej22e is much tougher than you think it is. I have seen them hold 7-10psi (making about 200whp) for years with even out engine management (only a RRFPR)

Going through all the trouble to get a manifold and up-pipe made to clear a non-turbo cross member is foolish. The price of SS x-members or jdm take off are cheap enough. Either way IMHO reliable build this is not..

of course its not be perfectly reliable, that's why if it was me i would do exactly what i said earlier. Also making a ej22t/25 + turbo doesn't mean its actually going to be more reliable, just more reliable in theory.

Seriously.. your going to compare a EJ22T to a EJ22E block? You know the EJ25D heads are on par with WRX EJ20 heads..
Its not theory that combo works.. but does not yield high AWHP numbers..

I'm thinking cost and goals here chuck. I watched grayguys 22t/25D build from beginning to end and still never got to see it run right. so i basically got to see a friend lose several thousand dollars in both time and money that didn't get him a functional vehicle. without going through both the heads and the block and replacing everything you are basically rolling the dice and hoping everything is good, and still spending additional time and money along the way. I have seen plenty of well thought out subaru engine builds destroy themselves over something stupid or maybe something that was more or less unavoidable, i don't believe in a sure thing engine build cause like it or not shit still happens.
I honestly regret not doing what i have said to do in this thread instead of doing my eg33 swap as my swap combined with my work schedule and a little bad luck has left me without my subaru for the last 2 years, i could of had my 2.2 boosted and going again in a weekend and i could of had another ej22e sitting in my garage for like $300 in case mine popped, and even if mine went it would be all of another Saturday to have the engine swapped and running again. if i was looking for about 175ishwhp (sounds similar enough to what the OP is looking for) boosting a stock 22e is exactly what i would do.
I know some people don't like the idea of "disposable engines", but personally i think there is a perfect place for them (Honda D16s is another one) and heck with some careful thought in the right places, there's a good chance it won’t ever have to be disposable at all. What i do know is that my approach would satisfy the goals and budget of the OP, as soon as your crack open a used block and have a set of used heads gone over, the budget could be blown. heck i wouldn't dare run a 22t/25D without a standalone, so there goes the budget right there.
As for EJ22T block vs EJ22E block, you strait up don’t need an fully closed deck to make less than 200whp (you don't even need it for 400whp), and the lower compression isn’t needed either. It’s not like we are talking about a GT35 and 30psi here..
