i dont mind that it sorta looks like a legacy, but just like the legacy, it looks and likely is huge... how much crap do people need to move around on a daily basis anyway!!

I would have rather seen this Impreza be the new Legacy. Looks the part. Impreza needs to get back to its old rally self like how the GC and the GDs were.

The 2012 Subaru Impreza debuted on Wednesday at the 2011 New York Auto Show with an eye toward better fuel economy, courtesy of a smaller, less powerful engine.

"We just renewed STI and WRX last year," wrote Dominick Infante, Subaru of America spokesman in response to an e-mailed query from Inside Line. "They will stay on their current platform for the near term. We will have a new WRX and STI in the future."

The 2012 Subaru Impreza is equipped with a new 148-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder Boxer engine; the base 2011 Subaru Impreza 2.5i is equipped with a 170-hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder Boxer engine.

The 2012 Impreza can be equipped with either a five-speed manual transmission or a CVT. The outgoing model was offered with a five-speed manual transmission or a four-speed automatic transmission.

The 2012 Impreza Premium, Sport and Limited models with a CVT get a six-speed manual mode with steering wheel paddle shifters.

Yes but they increased MPG and if you look at this compared to some of the older engines (my 95 Legacy 2.2), it has more HP with a smaller displacement. And if the new model is lighter then the old...the HP difference will become less noticeable.

I understand them changing the engine to a smaller boxer so it gets better fuel mileage, but why make it look like another car model? I still can't tell the difference between a Toyota corolla and a camry.

Im really disappointed with this. Im not a huge fan of the current Legacy and this well just looks like crap. I really dont understand Subaru designers, one year its looks great and then just a couple years later they change a good design to something horrible. Subaru is the most inconsistent at making a good looking car

Aside from Aston Martin, I think every carmaker is like this. FWIW.

That being said, why couldn't they have made the new car the same size, even lighter AND even more fuel efficient? I don't quite understand why they always have to be bigger every generation...

FWIW, this new gen Impreza will supposedly be sub-3000lbs. in its base form...that's pretty light for a modern AWD car.

i kind of like it, plus with the bland look it looks cars that look like this do not get pulled over a lot, at least not as much that i have not noticed.

Change can be good maybe its time to let go. The new legacy is relatively ugly but it's sold better than the previous editions so Subaru is doing something right. I'm sure the new Impreza will do great and it has an amazing mpg for an AWD. That is what scared many possible consumers.

Popular =/= good. I don't trust any opinion of the general car-buying public, these are the same schmucks that thought SUV's were all the rage 10 years ago, now its stupid hybrids. These are the same people that buy appliances like camry's and accords by the boat loads, and no proper motorhead will ever consider them anything more than a box on 4 wheels to get you to the grocery store.

I understand Subaru wants to expand their clientele, and to do that would mean to cater to this group, but this also means sacrificing some of the very qualities that made their owners loyal to the brand.

If they would keep on going with the hybrid idea and bring the turbo diesel to the states and slap an auto transmission or a CVT to it i am sure it would they would sell like crazy. If Subaru would sell a car that could tow 4500 pounds and could get potentially 40 mpg or more on the freeway they would have almost the whole marked cornered.

Honest, if they are still looking like this in a few years, I would get one. I hate how the Legacy has become so fat. It's kinda silly that my '99 wagon weighs as much as an WRX STi(2005 ish). Lol personally, I would throw a Legacy badge on in and call it the Legacy mini. Haha

I like it more than the Legacy, but I still wouldn't buy one.

The latest Subaru in general I would buy is the one I did buy, my 06 BL. In 07 they made them look a little more bland on the exterior and WAY more bland on the interior, and its just gone down hill since.

I'm concerned about the future of the turbo engines as well. I got a good look at an '11 Forester the other day and they are making a lot of changes to the newer Subarus to get them to meet emissions. I suspect Subaru will have to adopt a direct injection system here pretty soon so they can raise the compression on the turbo engines, otherwise they are going to have a hard time getting the HC numbers down.

I know it looks like a 2011 Ford Mondeo but it's better looking than the thing they are going to make.

Im staying on the 3rd gen or earlier, i hate those electronic driving aides. Got bad experience with that in my dad 07 Rav4.

what about the Subaru XV concept, it is rumored to be the new Outback Sport. Except for the paint color on it i like the design and i really like the wheels on that car. since i do not know how to paste pics, i will just add a link.

the link i put up i think was for the new 2012 Impreza. on the Subaru of japan website that XV is for the last (current) gen, we got those here, but it looks like not as much ground clearance

Okay, so 36 hwy miles to the gallon sounds pretty good (although it's only 33 with the 5MT). I just read the motor trend article - It's not actually any bigger (chassis or exterior wise), the interior is just bigger due to some crafty engineering. And all that talk about the frame being stiffer sounds like they may have rectified the problem that the 08-10 Impreza had with handling. I'm actually pretty excited about it. And the wagon looks pretty good.

That car has no door handles. And you know full well that a car styled like that would never make it to production.
