Exhaust options for cheap... No generic stuff please...

Ok so I am going to be replacing my drive shaft due to it having some slack in it.


When I read the FSM on replacing it, it appears that I will be dropping the exhaust. And because my exhaust is original with almost 230k miles on it... i figures now would be an appropriate time to look at a replacement.

So I am wondering what my options are. I would prefer an option off of a USDM car that I could find at the subaru dismantler but would also be ok with an import from Japan.


So what SPT/OEM options are there that will bolt right up?

All I can find on ebay is a Fujitsubo and HKS... What is your guys input on this?

I have no current plans on engine performance so this would just be for sound/look/preventative

dpending on the canisters, the fuji is quieter than HKS, not much HP gains

not really looking for much in HP gains.

And when you say it is quieter, is it still slightly louder or more throaty then the stock setup?

I would prefer to not have something that people instantly think is an aftermarket exhaust... but something more subtle.

I believe the hangers need to be changed a little bit but thats about it. There's a few people on here who've done it awhile ago, and have liked the results.

And the flange need to be rotated and I think it needs to be lengthened a bit.

As far as I know there are no bolt on solutions for our cars aside from anything JDM.

I have a Magnaflow/SPT setup and it sounds pretty bangin.

Even with the changes to make them work, wrx/sti is going to be your cheapest bet. The only other options are bosal and stromung exhaust, but they're not cheap.

heres what I'm thinking about doing. Buy UEL headers on eBay or on the forums, then go to the local muffler shop and ask them to bend a 2.5" pipe the length of your car. You use your stock cats and possibly muffler (maybe get a glass pack or cherry bomb) and it will sound just like an STi!

My SPT axleback was bolt on.

It was between this and the STI axleback, both give a nice deep growl compared to stock. My UEL headers are on the way and I will let you know what happens later.

Headers, OEM cats, Glass Pack, 2.25 pipping to a Megan Racing MOE muffler or any muffler of your choise

Cheap alternative is to go with a OEM WRX cat back, just take it to a exhaust shop and have'em rotate the flange to match ours and move the hangers

I'm about to have a spare WRX catback. :D

When I get some extra cash I'm going to have the flanges re-done and hangers moved and I'm going to throw it on and see how it sounds. If I don't like it I'll probably sell it off cheap.

There are no cheap bolt on OEM options for your midpipe. There WAS an SPT axleback, but that is out of production now.

Your cheapest, most reliable option for this is to follow this recipe:
Find a used STi or WRX axleback $50-$75
Take it to a good reputable exhaust or race shop
Have them remove your old midpipe and axleback
Fab up new 2.25" midpipe with flanges to match catalytic convertors and your STi axleback.
They will move one hanger on the STi axleback
Install new catback system.

Total cost including parts & labor should be around $150-200.

You MIGHT be able to buy a used Stromung midpipe for that price. Maybe.

Thats an example of UEL headers + SPT axleback, with no other mods. Thats exactly what I have.
