The rear main seal on the 97 outback is beginning to leak. She has about 150K on her. Is it time to start stock piling part to swap in wrx motor. I have read all the swap stories and the only thing that scares me is the wiring harness. Anything else I need to be scared of.?

Scared of? Maybe wasting time and money if you don't get it done in time.
Easiest way is to find a front clip with the engine and harness/ECU intact - then you have ALL the parts you need minus some fabrication for the exhaust (downpipe).

H6 swap, seems like the latest trend here.

Get bored and go with the EJ20H I simple twin turbo from japan. It maybe hard to find the harness but it'd be a fun little swap.
Or find an H6 and throw one of those in. I don't really mean throw it in as there are some fitment issues with some of the other stuff under the hood.

RHD mounting for the twin turbo setup is an issue.

I never thought about the 3.0. What kind of problems have people been running into with this swap.

They were only ever made for an auto trans so if you go to manual you can run into issues. However this could all be fixed with the use of a standalone ECU.

Enjoy finding a proper radiator and cooling system for your H6 swap.

For around 3K, a USDM 2.0 WRX swap can be had. There's people out there that will merge your harnesses for you to. That's the hardest part by far.

Yeah this was my initial thought. The harness is what scares me. I have heard that you can sned one off to somewhere like East Coast Swappers and they will do the merge for you. This could be a fun project for next winter.

There are quite a few places that do harness merges now. Find one that's closer to you so if there are problems you can get it checked out.
The wiring for any engine swap is the hard part. Matching up the sensors, pinouts and expected operating functions of the car is the toughest (mentally) job.

If you go that route, I'd love to help if you need a hand wrenching at all. I'm looking at the possibility of a US WRX 2.0 swap down the road. I miss boost!

That would be cool. Always looking for help turning wrenches. It been so long since I have been on here. I didn't know there was anyone local.
And thanks to the mods for getting me into the right topic.
