So I was thinking, why should I bother to buy poly bushings for my tranny crossmember when I could just weld the 3 pieces together as one solid piece. I'd still be using the group N tranny mount to connect the tranny to the, crossmember, and I could still drop the whole unit to be able to drop the tranny. Am I missing something here?

These items are designed to flex under heavy load thus the need for a elastic type bushing. Welding them together will eventually lead to the welds breaking. I don't see the need to do this when the crossmember bushings are pretty cheap.

You have to have SOME flex in everything. If you don't, the weakest link breaks eventually (and it'll feel like you're riding in a rail car on old train tracks).
This is why when people beef up their swaybars, sway links, they end up breaking the swaybar mount...
