Hey guys, I'm trying to find out why an Outback trans and GT wont interchange. I'm looking or a trans for my 97 GT Wagon and the interchange at all the wreckers is saying GT only.

I have a friend that has a 97 Outback trans, but we are not sure why it wont interchange. If its just the rear diff, thats no big deal, but if it's something else it would be great to know. I was thinking it might have something to do with the trans ECU, but that was just a guess...

Any help would be grateful! Thanks!

The GT and the OBW both have 4.44 gears, but the 4th gear is different I think, if the manual trans is any indicator.

I know in the 5 speed the 5th gear is taller on the GT due to the shorter overall diameter of the wheels and tyres.

Is that the only thing thats different? Just 4th gear?

After looking around, the gearing is the same as long as it is from a 2.5L. The only think that could be different is the TCU.

This is a thread I found.

Well, all is not lost. It may just need to see the TCU. I don't know if the rear ratios are programmed into the unit, but try it out and see Worse case scenario you go to a pick-and-pull and grab the proper TCU.

Or just go all out and do a 5 speed swap. :-)

Thats the problem, the only places around here that have the parts I need are not Pick and Pulls... They all want an arm and a leg for computers and the Pick n Pulls here dont have any 2.5 cars, they are all 2.2's or 2.5 Foresters. My buddy dosent have his parts car any more ether, but the trans and a few other parts.

I have another friend that deals with an Engine importer and is going to see if he can get me a deal for a trans and a LSD diff with it. I would love to drive my Wagon though...

So I'm gonna try and see if the swap will work... I just got a 97 Outback parts car today with an auto in it. Figured I should have all the parts I need to make it work...
