DIY Window DE-Tinting.

To begin I was ordered by the court to remove my window tint. The judge said 20% on the front windows was too dark. Lame. So he said I could either pay the full $297 or take the tint off and have the ticket dismissed. There is a DIY on this subject on here but the assumption was that everyone lives where it’s warm. viewtopic.php?f=39&t=6086 (http://www.sl-i.net/FORUM/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=6086)

Current tint:

Things you will need:
• Heat gun/Hairdryer
• Razors
• Razor holder (optional but makes it easier)
• Acetone
• Rags

First thing you should start doing is heating the upper corner of the window. Once hot you can slide the razor edge between the tint and window.

now you begin to peal. Depending on the quality of the tint it will take 4 min or 40 min per window. My tint was very high quality so on the first window I just pulled very firmly and it came off with most of the glue still on the tint and not on my window. Took 4 mins to clean the remaining glue off the window.

The other side I made sure I left a lot of glue on the window to show what most poor quality tints do. Using you heat gun as you go you pull the tint off. It might come off in strips, which makes it frustrating. If it does use your heat gun and razors to get it off. Also taking the door panels off makes it easier

Now that the entire tint is off you have to start removing the glue. I used acetone, which is like industrial quality goo gone. It thins the glue to the point where you can scrap it off with your razors. Wipe a section of the glue with the acetone then scrape (make sure you wear gloves)

the glass should be completely clear. Wipe it over one more time with the acetone to make sure you got everything. And you should be done.

I did the same thing except i used a steamer. it works great. if you do it right most of the glue comes off with the tint. and the glue that is left can be easily scraped off without solvent due to the heat and moisture.

I did the same thing. Only difference is I used brake cleaner. That way the glue just wiped away.

As a heads up. If you use a fabric steamer, you will not have any glue/sticky residue left on your window.
