Anyone know if you can get the shade out without removing the headliner?

you have to remove the sunroof to take it out.

Take the headliner out, and then you can slide it backwards off the tracks and over the bar/backstop or whatever you want to call it. More of a pita to get it back in than out.

You don't need to take the sunroof out, but you do need to pull the headliner.

Actually, it was much easier getting it back in then out.

It wasn't hard going back in, just the clips on the sides kept popping out. Kinda hard to describe now its been like 2 years since I did it.

Quick question John - when you are removing the headliner, can you see the underside of the roof skin behind the sunroof?

I need to access the roofrack bolts and am thinking it would be fairly easy to drop the rear of the headliner down and get to them from that side. What do you think?

Also because I need to replace my sunroof at some point, when you pull the headliner, can you ever get it reinstalled properly? I understand it to be a PITA.

Headliners in BK/BG's are not that bad really! They are harder in BH's and I took that out of mine a few weeks ago.

You just need to remove the "oh shit" handles, dome lights, some plastics (a/b/c/d pillars), rear trim by hatch, and the upper seat-belt mounts. Should take about an hour... I should have done a DIY when I did mine...

And Huffer, you CAN access the Rack bolts WITHOUT removing the sunroof... The rears are easy to get to, but the fronts you will want to drop it all the way so you dont buckle it... :smt023

Oh I know, I'm not removing the sunroof - I just wanted to know if I could get to them from the rear hatch and move forward, rather than front to back. Less to remove.

The issue I'm having is that the nuts that the roof rack bolts drop into have started spinning freely from the body of the car. My guess is that they are not welded to the roofskin and are just glued or something. So my plan is to remove them, clean up the areas and then see if I can reglue them or have a shop weld them in place for me.

Rackless, while super slick, is fairly inconvenient for me as it means I'm hauling stuff inside the car and getting it dirtier than normal. Plus, with Christmas coming up, I want to put the tree on the roof instead of inside.

Do you have an aftermarket rack?! When I parted my 97 BG and my 96 BK they only have nuts from the inside, no exterior bolts at all...

The fronts you should drop the whole liner. The rears you dont need to, to get a hand in there with a wrench or ratchet...

I think I have a rack off my BK still... Ether way, they only use nuts with studs on the rails.

If I was you, I would just get a Yakima rack with Q clips... that way you can take it off when you want and haul more anyway...

Factory rack on a 1998 GT.
No, there's definitely a bolt that sits inside the roofskin and has a lip that sits on top (on the outside). The hex-headed bolt that goes into it secures the roof rail to the roof - 4 bolts and nuts each side.

I think you might be getting confused between the rack part that goes between the rails, and the rails themselves. On my car the rails are off:

I stand corrected... Just too a look at my BK parts car.... They have studs with bolts, BG's have studs in the rails with nuts. so they might be spinning on you... I have had the same problem with Ford rack rail. I see what your saying now...

You might be able to get away with just pulling the rear and sides of the liner. It will just be harder.
