i searched but couldnt come up with any real good info.

i know you have to mod the EGR to make it work.

anyone have experience doing this? is there a DIY somewhere?

switch the intakes and tap the head?

what else?

PM Pat Olsen. He did it, and some of the engine sellers do it as well.

You can always use the JDM block and reuse your USDM heads and intake manifold.

or Delete the EGR all together...

im worried the heads on my current motor are warped.

my plan is to pull the current motor with hg issues, install the JDM motor, and rework the old motor while its out.

is it possible to delete the EGR without causeing a CEL?

i never tapped my jdm motor for egr and the only negative thing i ever noticed was the CEL throwing a po106, mpg and power was fine as far as i could tell tho

Yes yes.. many people think that the EGR CEL will throw their car into limp / safe mode.

Not true.. EGR is just a valve that directs exhaust into the heads during cold starts...

But then again not everyone likes CEL's on their dash.

If you must you can just drill out the hole in the head (however) if done poorly then you may get a few metal shavings stuck in the head.

Has anyone tried running the EGR valve without the tube?

I heard that if you swap your intake manifold you will be good, it takes care of the egr problem and then you wont have different plugs. I soon will need to put together all that is required for a jdm engine install.

From some research I heard the waterpump is different when doing the timing belt

It would be great to get a guy who did it and done it in here

Running without EGR may cause the engine to ping or retard timing under cruise or light to moderate acceleration. It may also cause a slight reduction in fuel economy, and if your emissions testing is done on a dyno (most AWD cars are exempt) you might fail with high NOx emissions.

Chuck I think is thinking of a heat riser on old carbureted cars that had valves at the back of the exhaust manifolds that create an exhaust restriction when the engine is cold, which would direct exhaust through ports in the intake manifold that weren't connected to the intake air. It was just used to heat up the intake to help vaporize the fuel on cold engines.

EGR is used to reduce combustion chamber temperatures during cruising and light acceleration when the engine is warmed up. It is disabled when the engine is cold, at idle, or hard acceleration. This is done primarily to reduce NOx (oxides of nitrogen) emissions, but can also help increase your fuel economy because the EGR gases take up some space in the combustion chambers (effectively reducing the displacement of the engine) and the cooler combustion temp allows more ignition timing advance. This is why running without EGR can cause detonation or pinging, which the knock sensor would correct for by retarding the timing.

The engine computer monitors the EGR system function using a MAP sensor (its usually mounted on the pass side strut tower) to monitor intake manifold vacuum as it opens and closes the EGR valve while cruising. If it doesn't see the change its expecting, it will set a code. Unfortunately that is a very difficult system to bypass and keep the CEL off.

ok...engine installed, new, updated HGs, etc...

the hydraulic lifters gave a helluva tick for about 10 minutes after initial start up, kind of worried me, but eventually, all was well.

i just plugged the EGR tube for the time being, as i simply didnt have money/time to get the hole drilled/tapped, or do it myself.

heres my thought, can anyone tell me for sure if the ECU fiddles with the fuel ratio when the EGR kicks in? cause if not, what stops anyone from simply running a tube from the egr, to somewhere downstream of the MAF? the only problem i see here is IF the ECU plays with the AF ratio, then it would run way lean...no good...but if the ECU doesnt mess with AF as the EGR opens, why not just run it to the air box, cause, unless im mistaken(please correct if i am) the code that will be set if for EGR flow, this wouldnt be an issue if you ran it to the airbox down stream of the MAF...

anyway...drove it around a bit today, and the only code set was p0122...something to do with the TPS..i re adjusted the TPS ans reset the codes..nothing has come back yet...we will see...
