First off big Thanks to SVXdc and dajohnson53 over at nasioc as this is where I got my info and pictures from. Here are the threads threads (http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=749402)and this one (http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?p=31371837&postcount=323)

This guide should be able to be used with 2nd and 3rd gens without a problem not to sure about 1st and 4th and 5th.

I got a 2007 WRX STI premium stereo from a friend for 50 bucks great deal, if your looking for a double din oem 6 disc mp3/wma/data discs, satellite radio ready, and to have the ability to plug in an ipod or mp3 player without having cords all over or out the front facia.

In case anyone was wondering, from 95-2007 all Subaru radios are plug and play in our cars all you will need to do is follow the directions for removing and swaping over the bracket for it. Note: Only exception is svx and those such as 4th gen legacys which moved to a bezel integrated headunit and not the standard form factor.

Tools that will be needed:
-10mm socket
-philips screw driver
-mini philips screw driver(magnetic is recommended)
-a friend with small hands
-double sided foam tape(optional)
-Wire strippers
-wire cutters
-solder and soldering iron
-electrical tape
-mini zip ties(optional)
-3.5mm stereo jack to rca cables red and white (you would use these to plug into a stereo, hometheater system to play music off of (got mine at radioshack for 5 bucks)
-3.5mm stereo jack extension (optional but reccomended 2 bucks at radioshack)
-sharp object that can cut through plastic without killing yourself

Uninstalling old radio
1) disconnect car battery with a 10mm socket (i always do this when ever I play with electronics in the car, you never know)

2)open up your cup holder all the way and under the side taps should be two screws. After the cup older should pull out.
3)pull out your ash tray, there are two small screws under the entrance holding on the rest of the facia use your mini philps to get them out
4)pull the front facia off slowly you will also be pulling out the cigarette lighter, twist it through the hole to pull it out and free it from the facia
5)you will now see 4 screws directly in front of you and 2 in the furthest away from you on the sides of your radio, undo all of them
6) slowly pull the radio out and disconnect the 2 cords in the rear, antenna, and the main radio harness. Now your old radio is free!
7) Open your center compartment and there should be two screws, undo those and cover for the ebrake and the shifter should come off one after another.

Swapping over radio brackets
1)take your old radio on both sides the undo the radio bracket by removing the 4 screws on each side.
2)now put them on your new radio, line up the holes so that all 4 screws go back in this should get you the perfect distance from the facia of the stereo

Getting the aux harness and ashtray mount:
If you want to use your audio auxiliary for your ipod or mp3 player then follow along. If yours came with the 8pin harness and auxiliary ashtray (seen in the first picture) Then go ahead and run your harness plug it in and your golden, if you only have one or the other keep reading. If you wish to buy the harness Clarion(the maker of the stereo) sells replacements you can contact them here (http://www.hermanelectronics.com/HermanStore/homepage.asp) or here (http://www.pacparts.com/) both of these companies sell the same harness that you need just contact them and here is the low down

the specific details are:

Stock 6 CD changer in my '07 Subaru Impreza is Clarion model number PF-2868A-A

Auxiliary Jack pigtail part number is:854-4598-02 "Extension lead" which superseded the p/n I found in the manual (854-4598-01 )
Cost was $17.95 plus shipping.

You can buy the aux ashtray for 68 bucks at the dealership when you plug in an 06-08 wrx vin number(same model number for those years). For me finding out it was 68 bucks sort of turned me off from the idea of getting it and then I thought of an Idea. If your find with the price by all means go ahead and buy those parts and get it installed, if your cheap and love a good diy keep reading.

Modifying your aux harness:

I found a diagram of the harness, you can follow the colored wires to the get what goes where.

2007 Pin-out

Looking at the back of the radio the pins are numbered:

4 3 2 1
8 7 6 5

Pin assignments:

Quote:
2007 Impreza:

1 - Aux Input - Left
2 - Aux Input - Right
3 - NC
4 - Chassis Ground*

5 - Aux Input - Audio Ground
6 - Aux input enablex
7 - NC
8 - NC

* Possibly not all radio models.

Logic tells us its simple wire the audio ground and the chassis ground together and the aux left and right to the rca cable's white and red. But it leaves us with the aux enable. This tells the stereo if a music player is plugged in, and enables you to toggle between cd and aux. When its not connected to complete a circuit its disabled not letting you toggle only the cd.

1) cut the end of the harness off where it would have gone into the ashtray aux and strip the wires
2) connect the aux ground, chassis ground and aux enable into one wire and wire it to the black ground off the cigarette lighter
3) grab your 3.5mm cable and cut the red and white rca ends off then strip those two wires
4) splice together one side of the cable to aux left and the other to aux right If you can plug in the main harness to the radio, do it and test to see that left and right are working before soldering them.
5) run the rest of the 3.5mm cable under the center console next to the gear shift
6) to prevent wear and tear on the cord thats soldered I bought an 3.5mm extension and connected it
7) take your sharp object and make a hole into your little cubby thing so that your extension cable can fit through and pull desired length of cable.
8) clean up any extra wires with mini zip ties for a cleaner look and less mess.

Now put everything back together and enjoy!!

For this to be used in a first gen. follow the diy here http://www.bbs.legacycentral.org/viewto ... 10&t=28370 (http://www.bbs.legacycentral.org/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=28370). I made an adaptor harness and its really easy, I tested it with a stock 97 outback stero and everything works like it should.
