Hey guys, back with another tricky issue. So I've posted before about how I have to fill up at a trickle or the pump kicks off, but never could figure out the issue and gave up since it was only a minor inconvenience. However, now I've been getting a CEL due to the same issue. It seems as if some sort of vent for the fuel tank isnt venting fuel vapors and pressure associated with that, but I'm not sure exactly what it could be. I know its not the charcoal canister or check valve located behind the drivers side rear wheel because I unhooked the hoses to both of them and tried filling up but experienced the same issue.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks guys :)

I believe that the vent is part of the filler tube assembly. Basically the vent is what triggers the pump handle to shut off when it feels enough pressure in the vent line... in your case, you have crud/junk in the vent line so it thinks that it is full when it isnt. Causing the pump to shut off.

I am not 100% sure but I think if you look at the filler hole behind your gas door, you will see a little hole at the bottom of the assembly. It connects to the vent tube seen here attached to the main filler:

I have a feeling that if you get to that vent tube and take it off... you will be able to blow out a bunch of stuff.

I'll take a look at it, and see if I can blow anything out of it, unfortunately I have a feeling that it wont be the problem. The previous owners had the filler neck replaced before from the original Subaru dealer that sold the car and that they always took it to to have maintained, I have the receipt and work order from when it was done in '06 and it never fixed the slow-filling issue for them either. I'm about to go out and check it though, I let you know what I find out.

Well, I took off the cover to find tons of mud, but after clearing all of the dirt out and unhooking the vent hoses I blew compressed air through all of them and the valve located on the filler neck and everything flowed fine. Just to be sure I didnt clear anything out I went to the gas station and tried filling up to find the same problem, I then disconnected the hoses and tried that as well, but no luck, I'm baffled.

the code p1441 is concerning to me. the wording for that code is a little un clear but it sounds like it is referring to an evap vent valve problem. the vent valve has to be opening when refueling otherwise pressure will build in the tank and kick the pump or cause fuel to cough back out the filler neck. if you have a code for a vent valve (which it kind of sounds like you might) and have problems refueling, then that is where I would look.

Where is the vent valve that youre referring to? There seems to be soo many valves and vent lines associated with the evap system that Im confused as to which vent could be bad, or which hose could be clogged.

I haven't looked at the Legacy specifically, but it would likely be near the charcoal canister, which is under the hood on the wagons. It would likely have a 1/2" hose attached to it, leading out to another canister with a filter in it.

Charcoal canister is not under the hood, its behind the passenger side rear wheel. I've unhooked the hoses from that valve during refueling already in an attempt to test it, and unfortunately I got the same result.

Pre 97 do not use the engine bay canisters

Post 97 use both front and rear.

If the tubes are cross crossed, clogged, ripped or damaged you will get these issues.

Try sealing off the vent tube and apply compressed air and check for leaks.

Lets take a step back here and look at the refueling issue...

There are really only so many things that can cause the pump to click off... it is a mechanical system...

It HAS to be something with the pressure vent on the filler neck... nothing else would cause the pump to click off right?

^^ Great finds! I searched a bit, but I'm terrible at searching on forums and I couldnt find anything quite as helpful, I definitely checked the valve on the filler neck,it was easy enough to get to, and the valve allowed air to flow through it, and I even unhooked the hoses and tried that.

I'm wondering if its the valve that has a hose that goes into the frame, one of the ones above the charcoal canister, its the only one I havent messed with (other than the ones on top of the tank. I dint even know it was there, I thought the only other valve by the charcoal canister was the one connected to the filter. I'm afraid to try and get to that valve though. I havnt gotten to yet because it requires removing the charcoal canister, which I wont get back on because the brackets/bolts will break (rust) I know because I've already tried.
