Cocktail to fix my trans?

Old girls' getting older. Got bearing noise at lower speeds, on accel in 2nd below 1500RPM, and on decel in 1st, 2nd, 1st is impossible to downshift to above 2MPH (literally), 4th grinds on upshift to, and downshift from 5th (double-clutch FTW!), generally its had most of these problems since I got it with my last car at 155k. I've collectively put about 40k on it.

So in the mean time, while I search for a donor trans, what's the recommended fluid(s) I should run to quiet the noise down and maybe prevent some of the syncro issues? I've heard of cocktails fixing WRX and STi issues over on nastysock, would any of those fix my Legacy?

Run an oil cleaner through the transmission, flush it (can only be properly done by someone with a suction machine) and then refresh with new oil. Total dealer cost $80-120.

I've run Redline lightweight shockproof in my subarus along with some other redline product in my 295k toyota pickup to good success. Course fluids won't fix the problem completely, but they can help.

I agree with Mike-Tracy. I run 1 qt Redline Lightweight shockproof gear oil and the other 2.7 qts of Redline 75W90 NS gear oil. It smoothed out my trans almost instantly once I changed it.

Not sure what Garrison is talking about, our manual trans are just drain and fill. You can 'flush' by simply draining it, adding new fluid, run that fluid for a few minutes, then drain and fill with desired gear oil.

Also, drain the fluid once the trans is at full temp, the oil is thinner and flows more easily.

no cocktail will fix anything, but there are a few out there that will help mask the issues. so long as your proactively looking for a replacement trans, put whatever you want in there...
