CV Axle Problem?

So I had a leak in my front diff where the CV axle goes into the differential on the driver side. I went down and took it all apart and replaced the inner seal and O ring.

I realized that my CV axle didn't look pushed in all the way like it does on the opposite side. Below is a picture. Anyone know the deal with this or what could be happening? When I took off the cv axle from the hub I tugged on the axle and it popped right out even the spindle inside the diff came out with it so basically I didn't have to pop the pin out, everything came out with it.

Also when you take the inner seal out remember to drain the front diff fluid. Because I didn't and it poured all over the place. Great thinking!

Just went out and looked. I am still leaking fluid like before. Even though I replaced the Seal and the O-Ring. This car is being a nightmare real fast.

when you replaced the seal, did you reset the holder ring exactly as it was before? thats very important for the bearings in there.

did you grease/lube the cv shaft/seal before putting it back in after replacing the seal? doesnt look like it from the pics...gotta use lube sometimes man, or youl tear shit up :lol:


looks like the CV axle isnt seating correctly, theres a snap ring on the end of it, and should make a noticable click when seated.

EDIT: that metal colored fluid doesnt look the greatest either.. :shock:

I did reset the holder ring yes. I marked it with a whiteout pen and counted the turns. Subaru told me to be SURE I do that. So I did do that. I didnt lube the CV shaft. So is it safe to assume that I should tap the axle stub in till it clicks? The snap ring on the end of it was loose is this normal?

All the fluid that came out of there was diff fluid right the only reason I ask is because I read someone saying they drained their tranny fluid. Maybe because it was an M/T?

i dont have much experience with m/t..but i believe it should be the same fluid in the diff, as in the trans, gear oil.

what iv had luck doing, is greasing up the part that goes into the diff(to not tear the seal) and getting it started, and then just grabbing the part that goes into the wheel hub, and extending the CV axle as much as i can and give it a good shove, almost like using the CV joints as a slide hammer.

the clip should be loose enough to play with, but not loose enough to fall off.

Now that you have me curious about the tightning of the holder ring. What can happen if its too loose and what can happen if its too tight?

I believe too tight it would mess up the bearings. But what about too loose?

Had my seal replaced today. And when the guy put my car up on the lift my axle had somehow pushed it self back into place. Anyways all is good now.
