97 2.2 Legacy diag. code P0302

I am trying to diagnose a cylinder 2 misfire on my ej22e.
Earlier this month I noticed a fuel smell while driving. Thought it might have been burning coolant so I drained the radiator and flushed in some distilled water with Subarus stuff. The smell was less noticeable afterwards.
I first saw the CEL light while driving on the freeway. It flashed a few times then turned off. I drove the car again later that night which caused the light to flash again. I scanned the car and saw code P0302 for a number 2 cylinder misfire.. a day later I still have the code and light.

When was the last time you did plugs / wires?

Have you checked your plugs?
Is there Oil on them?
Are the wires loose?

Usually the way these types of missfires work is

1) Plugs
2) Wires
3) Coilpack
4) Bad timing..

does it kinda start weird sometimes? could be a leaky injector as well. smell your oil. if it smells like gas, change your oil and replace your injector(s) and you should be good to go.

Ive been driving the car for 10k--my guess is that plugs and wires, coilpack are all factory installed. Everything seems tight, didnt really notice any oil leaks. I did manage to shock myself on the coilpack while the car was running :smt031. Smart I know.

I removed the ground cable from the battery for a good hour and now the light and code are actually gone. I guess the thing just worked itself out The car still smells though. Could this still be caused by the list of things you mentioned?

I just smelled the dipstick...its hard to say. Ill have to get someone else to lend a nostril or two.

Id have someone check it out soon. If there is gas in the oil it destroys the properties of the oil and then it won't lubricate and cool engine components as it should.. Which could be very harmful

I smelled it again today and did get a waft of fuel coming from the oil. Is there any way to test the injector and would it be just the one injector for the 2nd cylinder?
I guess an oil change would be the first step. It seems like to computer is quiet and happy now so maybe that will keep things working nicely.

If you shocked yourself on the coil pack without removing anything, then you found the problem. The coil pack and plug wires are all highly insulated, and so are you, so if you got shocked by the coilpack, then there has to be a break in the insulation somewhere. A crack in the coil pack could cause the spark to arc to the intake manifold instead of across the plugs in certain conditions.

No, I am just a noob. I fumbled around with the number 2 wire while the engine was running. I guess this is how you learn when you are as stubborn as I am.
